And I also believe it is vital, for your life, to do things like exercise and getting out of a difficult environment in order for you to start feeling momentum as you defeat whatever it is that’s bringing you down. Your mental health should be taken as seriously as your physical body. Removing the stigma (I say stigmatism in the video - not perfect! ;)) is essential to being the best version of you. You don't need me to tell you that hitting the snooze button once your alarm goes off doesn't make it any easier to wake up. In fact, you probably feel more anxious, less productive, and more tired by the time you wake up after hitting snooze multiple times. In this video I'll explain why even though it may seem impossible to get up after hearing the alarm once, it's necessary. Your brain relies on sleep cycles to feel refreshed and energized. Once you wake up and then go back to sleep, you hijack your brain and tell it that it needs at LEAST one more hour of sleep. So, if you don't have another hour in the day to spare (you don't), get up and get started. It will be hard at first, but soon you'll understand that the key to productivity is simply getting up on time. Do this for a week and watch how your life improves and your to-do list shrinks.

I recently sat down with Cassey Ho of Blogilates and Lisa Bilyeu on their podcast @besheroic. She asked me one of the most common questions she gets, “How do I get motivated, I can’t get off the couch.” The answer is simple, as I told Tom Bilyeu on Impact Theory…MOTIVATION IS GARBAGE. How do you get motivated? You don’t. How do you get off the couch? You push yourself off even though you really don’t want to. The mistake everyone makes is waiting around until they FEEL motivated to “get off the couch”. And the second you realize that you are NEVER going to feel like getting off the couch, your life will change forever. This is one of my fundamental beliefs. Feeling unmotivated is natural, letting it stop you is a choice. I’m just like you. I hate exercise. I never FEEL motivated to get off the couch, and for years I struggled to get off the couch because I was waiting to feel ready to get off the couch. The moment I realized, “Holy shit, the way I feel about exercise is never going to change and I’m never going to feel motivated,” that was the lightbulb moment. There’s a difference between how you feel and the actions you CHOOSE to take. The lightbulb moment for me was when I realized it doesn’t matter how I feel -- I can push myself to do anything if it’s important to me. I no longer WAIT to feel ready, but to actually force myself to do the things I hate because I know I should. I do this with a lot of things: paying taxes, having difficult conversations, eating healthy, going grocery shopping, making my bed, vacuuming, and the list goes on and on. If you stopped waiting to feel like it and started forcing yourself to do the things you don’t feel like doing, you’d have everything you’ve ever wanted. Bottom line: If you hate exercising – you are not alone. When you start to feel anger understand that this emotional rush is actually causing you to warp how a situation truly is. Instead of jumping to a conclusion and reacting...PAUSE. 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1, mentally acknowledge that anger exists, but do not say "I am angry". Rather, say "I am noticing that I'm getting angry right now." This is essential data. Now you can start to understand your triggers and prepare yourself for how they will or will not affect you moving forward. If you or someone you love suffers from depression this is a very important video to watch and share. Depression is real. You aren’t alone if you suffer from it and you need to know it is treatable. You also need to know that despite how you feel right now, you can learn to how to live a very happy and successful life even though you are struggling. I met a mom and her son at a Q&A I did after a speech recently. The son was very candid about his struggle with depression and even I got a little choked up as I was talking to him. I shared a concept that has helped my loved ones deal with depression and I want you to listen up and really embrace this idea: there is a difference between what you FEEL and what you push yourself to DO. The real challenge with depression is that it makes you FEEL like you can’t or don’t want to do what you need to do to heal. Depression is lying to you. You can do things that feel hard. No matter how depressed you feel when you wake up, you CAN push yourself to get out of bed. No matter how lethargic you’ve become, you CAN push yourself to go for a walk, get to the gym, or show up at spin class. No matter how much ice cream soothes your sadness, you CAN choose to eat healthier foods. No matter how much you feel like giving up or there’s no point, you CAN choose to push forward. And, no matter how alone you feel, that’s a lie, too. You are not alone and help from a professional or a family member is one phone call away. And you can push yourself to make it, despite how isolated you feel. Depression lies when it convinces you that you can't. You are capable. You do have a choice. It may feel like you don’t, but you always have a choice to push past the lies that depression tells you and take a step forward. As my friend Glennon Doyle Melton says, you can do hard things. And when you understand that depression lies to you I hope a little weight gets lifted and things won’t feel as hard as they have been. I hope you’ll realize that’s the trap depression set, and now you can free yourself by taking action. While you might suffer from depression right now, your life does not have to suffer as well. You do not have to listen to the lies. You can choose to get out of bed, get help and live your life, one small push forward at a time.

For the first 25 years of my life I dealt with severe panic and anxiety. There were several things I did to cope with complete overwhelm and lack of focus and clarity -- mostly procrastinate until the very last minute, ask for extra time on papers in college, and cross my fingers someone could bail me out of a tight situation. It wasn't until I was 47 years old that I learned something that would completely change how I relate to my own inability to focus, to become seriously distracted, and feeling like I was the most unorganized person I know...I was diagnosed with ADD. Stephanie sent in a question about how I deal with it, the pros and cons, and how I treat it. What's so interested about ADD, especially in Generation X women, is that we have been misdiagnosed for decades as having ANXIETY, when some of us may actually have been struggling with a learning disability. In 1994 when I first met my husband Chris, he was participating in a three-day seminar about personal development. I was completely weirded out and thought to myself, “I’ve met the man of my dreams and he’s in a cult.” I was really confronted by what I might learn about myself if I took the same course he was in because I wasn’t complete about how I treated former relationships, and I was scared that something might change between him if I started to get to work on my own personal development. I was scared at what I might find out about myself if I went on this journey. Instead of Chris giving me a guilt trip about doing the seminar he would just share what he was learning. In doing that, my curiosity grew and I eventually joined him on the path of personal development. What do you do when the person you are with isn’t supportive of your growth and refuses to work on their own? It may not seem like it, but it is a HUGE problem. First things first, you have to understand you can’t pressure them, give ultimatums, or give them so much shit that they all of a sudden start on their own personal development path. It’s not going to happen. But what you CAN do is influence whether or not they truly want to. The keyword in personal development is PERSONAL. It’s about you.
