I Was Almost A School Shooter | Aaron Stark | TEDxBoulder

07:29
After growing up in painful, abusive conditions, Aaron Stark was on his way to an atrocity, until simple acts of kindness changed his life forever. What is causing the rise of violence and are our current fears and solutions just making it worse? My name is Aaron stark. I am 39 years old with 4 children, 2 cats, one dog, and a beautiful wife. I am a stay at home dad; my wife is the breadwinner of the family. I am a comic book fan, a pop culture junkie, and a lover of the sciences. I have more knowledge about superheros, pro wrestling, and comedy than anyone really has a right to. After growing up in very abusive and violent circumstances followed by over a decade if personal recovery, I am now a happy family man. I recently shred a very personal story of my triumph over my past, and it has changed my life forever. My mission is to let people know that no matter how dark it may seem, there is light coming. We really are not alone. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

The Super Mario Effect - Tricking Your Brain into Learning More | Mark Rober | TEDxPenn

15:09
When 50,000 of Mark Rober's 3 million YouTube subscribers participated in a basic coding challenge, the data all pointed to what Rober has dubbed the Super Mario Effect. The YouTube star and former NASA engineer describes how this data-backed mindset for life gamification has stuck with him along his journey, and how it impacts the ways he helps (or tricks) his viewers into learning science, engineering, and design. Mark Rober has made a career out of engineering, entertainment, and education. After completing degrees in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and the University of Southern California, Rober joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. In his nine years as a NASA engineer, seven of which were on the Mars rover Curiosity team, Rober worked on both the Descent Stage (the jet pack that lowered the Rover to the surface) and some hardware on the Rover top deck for collecting samples. In 2011, Rober’s iPad-based Halloween costume helped launch both his creative costume company, Digital Dudz, and his YouTube channel, which now boasts 3 million subscribers and 400 million views. His videos focus on creative ideas and science- and engineering-based pranks and activities. Rober is a regular guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". Today, he does research and development work for a large technology company in Northern California, where he lives with his wife and son. What a 15-year-old meth addict taught me about leadership | Brian Fretwell | TEDxBoise

14:38
How do you lead someone who knows what they need to do to change their life but—despite all your help—isn’t going to do it? Brian Fretwell was confronted with this scenario repeatedly during his time as a teacher in the chemical addictions unit of a juvenile corrections facility. The honesty of a 15-year-old meth addict, and the wisdom of a mentor, reframed Brian’s definition and practice of leadership. Brian Fretwell helps people realize their value. He began his professional career as a teacher in juvenile corrections, empowering disenfranchised kids to do things they didn’t believe they could. From the Australian Outback to the Arctic Circle, today Brian teaches individuals, teams, and companies how to draw out their hidden potential. He got an MBA, ran a 100-mile ultra-marathon, overcame his fear of flying, and wrote a book because he didn’t think he could do any of them—and being a hypocrite isn’t his style. Making ADHD your Superpower | George Cicci | TEDxWVU

11:42
After George Cicci was diagnosed with ADHD late in life, he set out to change the misconceptions surrounding individuals diagnosed with this disorder. In this TEDx talk, he argues that others diagnosed with ADHD should utilize their “superpower” as an advantageous characteristic at work and in everyday life. George Cicci took his late-in-life ADHD diagnosis as both an answer to his questions about his personal behavior and difficulties, and as an opportunity to hit the "restart" button on his life and make up for lost time. Since his diagnosis thirteen years ago, he has become obsessed with learning to hack “The Superpower” as he calls it and teaches others to do the same. He is currently exercising this superpower as the Chief Marketing Officer at Impakt Media, where he works with brands like NBC Sports, Lucas Oil Pro Motocross and Major League Baseball affiliates. In addition to this, he is finishing his book “ADHD Life Hacker: the Four Rules for Success” and is launching an online course in productivity for people with ADHD. America's forced marriage problem | Fraidy Reiss | TEDxFoggyBottom

10:46
Forced and child marriage seem like problems that don't exist in America, but in reality marriage under the age of 18 is legal in all 50 states. After escaping her own forced marriage, activist Fraidy Reiss is working to help women and girls close the legal loopholes around these marriages for good. Fraidy Reiss is an activist who is recognized internationally as an expert on forced and child marriage in America, drawing inspiration from her own abusive forced marriage. After realizing that most women and girls trying to flee or resist arranged and forced marriages are limited by finances, religious law and social customs, she founded the organization 'Unchained At Last' to help women successfully start new lives. Her writing on the subject has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post and countless other publications in the US and beyond, and she has been interviewed and featured by those outlets as well as Financial Times, BBC, PBS, NPR, CBS and others. Reiss has also assisted in the creation of legislation to end and reduce child marriage which has been introduced and, in some cases, already passed in multiple US states. Overcome Anxiety in 7 Minutes | Mel Schwartz | TEDxBeaconStreet

09:25
Anxiety has reached epidemic rates in Western society. Most professionals simply try to manage it, primarily through medication. Psychotherapist and author Mel Schwartz shares his perspective on both the cause and the solution to this mass disquiet. He proposes that anxiety is often due to our relationship with our thoughts. These are thoughts that are perpetually seeking certainty. The more we try to know the future – which is of course unknowable – the more fearful and and anxious we feel. Mel demonstrates how to shift our relationship with uncertainty and embrace the unknown, freeing us from the grip of anxiety. Anxiety has reached epidemic rates in Western society. 13:36
Beatboxer Tom Thum has a symphony in his throat, but how does he make those sounds? Armed with a microphone and camera, get up close and personal as we peer down the back of Tom Thum's throat. In this eye opening, somewhat stomach turning and frequently hilarious talk and performance, Tom Thum is joined on stage by Ear Nose & Throat Surgeon, Dr Matthew Broadhurst as they reveal what happens behind the scenes. It's wet, it's gooey, it's strange, it's amazing and possibly the first time anything like this has been attempted on stage. Beat Boxer Tom Thum appears to have not only a symphony orchestra but also a jazz band, techno DJ, 80’s synth-pop group and collection of exotic world instruments residing somewhere in his throat. Recognised worldwide for his obscure talent to manipulate his vocal chords, Tom confirms to his audience that there is no sound he can’t mimic. Propelled to Internet stardom with his 2013 TEDxSydney performance, which quickly became the highest viewed TEDx video of all time, Tom can now be seen alongside composer Gordon Hamilton, performing his own world's first, original beatbox symphony, 'Thum Prints’. Dr. Michael Klaper is a gifted clinician, internationally recognized teacher, and sought-after speaker on diet and health. He has practiced medicine for more than 40 years and is a leading educator in applied plant-based nutrition and integrative medicine. Living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is not about having tidy, color-coded closet shelves. Living with OCD is like living with a monster, driving the afflicted to extreme behaviors that compromise quality of life. As mother to an OCD daughter, Tauscha Johanson describes their family’s discovery of how to starve the monster, making it weaker in the process, and everyone’s life a little better. People have questioned Tauscha Johanson’s unconventional approach to life since college where she studied zoology, pre-medicine, then re-directed her attention to her family instead of going to medical school. Obstacles and negative opinions didn’t sway her when she fought to get treatment for her daughter’s OCD, rose to leadership in pharmaceuticals, or chose a risky, but tremendously successful career in direct sales. What’s not in question is whether she knows how to lift, edify, and teach to empower others. Tauscha’s biggest concern is making a difference and having a positive impact on the lives of others – beginning with her family. Her faith and her family are the most important things in her life. Instead of hapless resolutions members of the "Lock-In" cult contract with themselves in a way that they cannot escape from (without suffering brutal consequences). Many of the most successful people in history have used its phenomenal power to create extraordinary success. Think you're hardcore enough? Then enter the Cult of Extreme Productivity Mark Adams is Vice President and Head of Innovation at VICE, which has come from humble beginnings as a print magazine to digitally transform into a 5 billion dollar youth media empire.
