Depression and its treatment

06:46
Around one in every 10 people will suffer from depression. Brain regions that control mood are often disrupted in depression. Antidepressant drugs or behavioral therapy can offer some relief. By understanding the brain better, our ability to treat depression should also get a boost. Watch the video to learn about the neural circuits affected in depression, and the molecular and cellular changes that might hold the key to treating it. Depressed mood most of the day 2. Diminished pleasure or interest 3. Increased or decreased appetite 4. Increased or decreased sleep 5. Psychomoto agitation or retardation 6. Fatigue everyday 7. Feeling worthless or having inappropriate guilt 8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate 9. Recurrent thoughts of death If you find yourself having of these symptoms please reach out for help! The sooner the better, and there are so many people out there willing to listen and help, so make that call and set up that appointment!! Treatment options are therapy and medication. We find that the best results come from a combination of both, but this is your treatment and your recovery, so you get to choose what is best for you. Talk therapy and CBT therapy are found to work best. This not only allows us to vent and gain come thoughtful insight, but CBT helps us to change out faulty thinking and inject some much needed behavioral changes into our lives. So get to know your depression. How long does it last? How bad has it been? When did it start and what does it feel like to us? That way when we call our doctor or therapist we can offer up all of this information to ensure we get the proper diagnosis and treatment. ⬇️ LINKS BELOW ⬇️ __ ▶️ FIND KATI ◀️ OFFICIAL SITE ➡️ http://www.katimorton.com TWITTER ➡️ http://www.twitter.com/katimorton FACEBOOK ➡️ http://www.facebook.com/katimorton1 TUMBLR ➡️ http://www.katimorton.tumblr.com PINTEREST ➡️ http://www.pinterest.com/katimorton1 __ ▶️ HELP! ◀️ SUBTITLE VIDEOS ➡️ http://goo.gl/OZOQXi ➡️ WE NEED YOUR HELP! Dementia Toileting problems

10:41
Hi Careblazer! Welcome to the place where we talk about everything dementia! In today’s video, I’m talking about the toileting problems that happen with dementia. Did you know that one of the main reasons family members place their loved ones with dementia in nursing homes is because of bathroom issues. It can be pretty challenging to constantly clean up after someone who isn’t able to use the bathroom properly. In this video, I share 4 different ways to consider trying if your loved one is starting to have trouble with using the bathroom. I hope one of them can be helpful to you. I’d also really like to hear about any tips or strategies you’ve been using. Leave a comment below and help other Careblazers out. I’ll be back next week, Careblazer. Until then, keep up the good work! If you want to sign up for the upcoming LIVE Care Class that I am planning, click here: https://www.careblazers.com/p/registration-page If you want to support the CAREBLAZER movement, you can do so here: https://www.patreon.com/Careblazers If you want your personal dementia caregiver survival guide click here: https://app.convertkit.com/landing_pages/366531?v=7 Dementia Bathroom Tips: https://youtu.be/Lfm9R5c9Tho Be sure to find Careblazers on FB and instagram In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. In my job, I help people with dementia, and their caregivers, by visiting them in their own homes and helping them cope through the many struggles of caring for someone with dementia. I have always wanted to help more people than is possible for me in a work day. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. This channel is for anyone caring for a loved one with any type of dementia (Frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.) I do this in my spare time. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

My Depression Story: Where I've Been & What I'm Feeling

05:42
I can't believe I'm uploading this. Um. So. These are some things I just felt I needed to say. It's okay not to be okay. I want you to know that. That you're not alone in all of this. Those feelings that you're feeling are valid, you are not wrong in your emotions. But you need to know that this is not a way of life, everyday should not be a bad one and every morning should not be a struggle. If you're feeling unexplainable sadness or having thoughts of harming yourself or others, TALK TO SOMEBODY. I cannot stress that enough. Cutting yourself will not fix your problems. Purging your dinner will not make today better. Those toxic coping mechanisms are causing bigger problems in themselves. I promise you that they will not make any of this go away. Reach out to your parents, friends, people you trust, scream on the top of rooftops until they hear you and listen that you NEED HELP. There is nothing weak or shameful about admitting that you can't do this on your own. I love you. I care about you. You matter to ME. If you ever hurt yourself it would hurt me. My love is unconditional & I'm not going anywhere. We're going to get through this together. __________ Little things that have been making me feel better: SLEEP- this is SO underrated, just by getting 8+ hours of sleep a day I feel like my mind is working so much sharper and more rational Massages- Expensive, yes. Worth it? YES! They ease tension and have been proven to lighten the symptoms of depression. ( I'm told that acupuncture works wonders, but I'm a little freaked out by that one, but let me know if you recommend it!) Talking- This sounds stupid I know. But just talking to someone about what you're feeling. A therapist, your parents, your friends, ANYONE- this time around I'm so glad I told my friends and family what I was feeling because now we can talk about it with no shame or embarrassment on my end. ______________ What I'm Wearing: Top- My dads....stole it when I went back home, kinda like a security blanket, and I'm embarrassed to say I've worn it every day this week __ OTHER CHANNELS: Second Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/MoreMeghann __ TALK TO ME: Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/meghanrosette Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/meghanrosettte Instagram http://instagram.com/meghanrosette Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/meghanrosette/ __ SHOP: Sigma: http://bit.ly/19mERWI HauteLook: http://bit.ly/1dxC6Rz BaubleBar: http://bit.ly/IUh3yz __ BLOGS: Tumblr: http://meghanrosette.tumblr.com/ Blog: http://meghanrosette.com/ __ Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with any of the brands mentioned in this video. __ Camcorder is: Canon T4i __ For business inquires contact me at melroseandpark.com with 'meghanrosette' in the subject line. Top 5 Treatments for Anxiety Disorders

09:55
Feel Anxious? Talk to Someone Now http://www.tryonlinetherapy.com/depressiontoexpression/ These are my Top 5 Treatments for Anxiety because they work for me! There are millions of things you can do to treat your anxiety that can range from a new diet, exercises and sleeping habits. The way we treat anxiety is different for everyone who experiences these nasty symptoms. What's important is that we realize how many options are out there and how accessible they are! Don't forget to keep the promise you made at the beginning of the video. You have to try each of these things and not give up if they do not work. It goes without saying that if you are not going to ever take medication, don't do it just for the heck of it because you made a promise to Scott. What I mean is that for the meditation and things you can basically do for free, stick with them for the long haul. Everything is difficult before it is easy but this should not discourage you from creating new rituals. Anxiety will continue to be a pain in the ass for you if you're not willing to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Practicing yoga may mean you get up earlier during the week. Seeing a psychologist may mean that you experience way more anxiety than normal during your first session. Sometimes there is a cost to mental health but let's not quit before we even start. Anxiety is the #2 mental health problem, and the #6 cause of disability. Others have said that stroke is the #1 cause of disability. That appears to be physical disability. However, the ability to fully function in our roles at home, work and society is affected by mental health concerns more often. About Dr. Brewer - Dr. Brewer started as an Emergency Doctor. After seeing too many patients coming in dead from early heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. He went on to run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine at Hopkins. From there, he made a career of practicing and managing preventive medicine and primary care clinics. His later role in this area was Chief Medical Officer for Premise, which has over 500 primary care/ prevention clinics. How To Deal With Depression - Tactics That Work Immediately

Do you want to know how to deal with depression? Do you want to know about depression, and how to cope with your condition? If so, you’re in the right place. This video is meant to help you to deal with depression by giving you tactics that can help you get relief right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYX87kkyubk Noah Elkrief This video is about how to deal with depression. In order to deal with depression and cope with your condition effectively, you first have to understand what causes depression. It may seem as if your depression is created by their being something factually wrong with you or your life, but that’s actually not true. If it was, then you would be forced to be dealing with depression in every moment that the facts were the same. But, that’s not the case. While your job, house, appearance, personality remain the same, you stop feeling depressed in any moment that you are distracted from your thoughts. That means that depression is created by thoughts not by facts. That means your feelings aren’t created by anything being wrong with you. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Recognize that who you are is not a depressed person. You are there, and feelings come and go. Sometimes sadness is here, sometimes joy, sometimes hopelessness. None of those feelings are who you are. They are a feeling in a moment. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Find what thoughts are creating your feelings of depression. In dealing with depression, any time you have the unwanted feelings of depression, it is because there are thoughts or stories that are being played in your mind. If you want to lose your depression, you first have to identify what specific stories or thoughts are going on that are creating the depression. Write these thoughts or stories down on paper. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Investigate the validity of the thoughts that are going on in your mind. If a thought says “I am worthless” or “I am a failure” question that assumption. Ask yourself “Can I think of any reasons, evidence, or examples as to why the opposite might be true?” Don’t try to convince yourself that you’re great. Try to ask questions that enable you to discover that your original negative assumptions about yourself and your life might not be true or valid. I hope that this video about how to deal with depression to be helpful. View my website here: http://www.liveinthemoment.org/ View my disclaimer here: http://www.liveinthemoment.org/disclaimer/

10 Foods to Eat to Fight Depression

06:00
It’s normal to feel depressed once in a while, when it’s connected to loss, life’s struggles, or a hurt self- esteem. But if deep sadness and feelings of being hopeless, helpless, and worthless become a part of your life and stop you from living normally, you may have clinical depression, a common but serious mood disorder. 1. Green Tea Drinking tea, especially green tea, is connected to a much smaller risk for depression. Because it has so many antioxidants and amino acids, green tea can help you fight depression in a natural way. Drink 3 to 4 cups of green tea every day to help lift your mood and your overall health as well. 2. Almonds Almonds have a lot of magnesium, which make them good for fighting depression. This is because magnesium helps make serotonin, a “feel good” brain chemical. This mineral also helps you have energy. Snacking almonds every day will help change your mood in a great way. 3. Salmon Because salmon is full omega-3 fatty acids, it is great for fighting depression. People who have depression usually don’t take in enough omega-3 fatty acids, which helps the brain work properly by lowering the swelling. 4. Dark Chocolate Dark chocolate can help raise serotonin levels in the body, which is almost like antidepressants. It also has carbohydrates in the form of sugar, which will tell the body to make more serotonin. Dark chocolate will also slow down the making of stress hormones, which will therefore lessen anxiety. Another thing dark chocolate can do is lessen the effects of chronic fatigue syndrome, because of its flavonoid content. 5. Eggs Eggs are another great food for fighting depression. This is because eggs, which are packed with protein and other nutrients also have zinc. Zinc is an important micronutrient that the body needs to help create neurotransmitters, and to keep them working properly. By eating foods full of zinc, like eggs, you can fight zinc deficiency and depression and maybe even other disorders. Eggs are also one of the few foods that have vitamin D. A lack of vitamin D is connected to depression and other mental health problems. 6. Bananas If you’re ever feeling low or depressed, try eating 1 or 2 bananas. Bananas have a lot of tryptophan which will raise the body’s serotonin level. They also help make tyrosine, which is needed for making norepinephrine and dopamine, two important neurotransmitters that can change your mood. 7. Avocados Because avocados have a great amount of omega-3 fatty acids they are a smart choice for people with depression. Avocados are full of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps lessen stress and relax a person. 8. Blueberries Blueberries have a lot of antioxidants that help the brain work properly and raise cognitive functioning. They also help a lot against depression. Blueberries also have mood- boosting nutrients like B- complex as well as selenium, zinc, and potassium. All these nutrients help neurologic and brain health in a good way. 9. Spinach Spinach is another great idea for fighting depression, because it is filled with nutrients like folic acid, magnesium, and zinc. These are important ingredients for brain health and fighting signs of depression. Try to eat more spinach by using it as a salad or for a green smoothie, or by adding it to your hot meals. 10. Asparagus Another green veggie that’s good for fighting depression is asparagus. Asparagus helps raise low folic acid levels that are linked to depression. It also has B vitamins which can help boost the mood. Asparagus has tryptophan, which helps create serotonin in the brain and blocks depression and anxiety. Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Serotonin, or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a neurotransmitter involved in many brain and body functions and is commonly known as the substance of well-being and happiness. Serotonin is produced in specialized neurons found mostly in the Raphe nuclei located along the midline of the brainstem. The axons of these neurons form extensive serotonergic pathways that reach almost every part of the central nervous system, including the cerebellum and the spinal cord. This is why it’s not surprising that serotonin is implicated in a vast array of brain functions, including sleep and wake cycle, appetite, mood regulation, memory and learning, temperature control, … among others. Serotonin is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan and is stored in small vesicles within the nerve terminal. When a serotonergic neuron is stimulated, serotonin is released into the synaptic cleft where it binds to and activates serotonin-receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. Serotonin action is then TERMINATED via removal of its molecules from the synaptic space. This is accomplished through a special protein called serotonin-transporter. Low levels of serotonin in the brain have been associated with depressive disorders and current treatments for depression aim to increase these levels. The most commonly prescribed medications, called “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors”, or SSRIs, act by blocking serotonin reuptake by the transmitting neurons. This results in elevated levels of serotonin in the synaptic space and its prolonged action on the receiving neuron. The SSRIs have developed into the drugs of choice because they produce fewer side effects thanks to their selective action on serotonin alone and no other neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, because serotonin is involved in a wide range of brain functions, the side effects remain significant and may progress to a potentially dangerous condition known as "serotonin syndrome". This syndrome is generally caused by a combination of two or more drugs used to raise the serotonin levels in the brain. If the medications are not discontinued, the condition may become fatal. Nonpharmacologic methods of raising brain serotonin have shown promising results in recent studies. It has been suggested that positive mood induction, either self-induced or due to psychotherapy, correlates with INCREASED serotonin synthesis in the brain. The interaction between serotonin synthesis and mood may therefore be 2-way, with serotonin influencing mood and mood influencing serotonin. Other methods include exposure to bright light and tryptophan-rich diets. To note, however, that serotonin-rich food such as bananas would NOT work because serotonin, unlike tryptophan, can NOT cross the blood brain barrier. Finally, although it sounds like a cliché, physical exercise maybe the most effective and safest way of improving mood. Several studies suggest that serotonin levels are increased with vigorous physical activity and that these elevated levels are maintained for several days after the exercise.

Lift Depression With These 3 Prescriptions- Without-Pills | Susan Heitler | TEDxWilmington

NOTE FROM TED: This talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, contains assertions about treating depression based on the speaker's own theory. While some viewers might find the prescriptions to be helpful, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf Dr. Heitler discusses a treatment for situational depression (even when we don't know it is situational!) WITHOUT psychopharmacology. Instead, she offers three prescriptions without pills, outlining these prescriptions using an example from her practice. She shows how investigating what makes us angry or upset can help us to re-empower ourselves, and our mental health. Susan Heitler, Ph.D., a Harvard and NYU-educated clinical psychologist, writes a Psychology Today blog that has received over 7.5 million reads. Dr. Heitler first earned recognition when her book From Conflict to Resolution brought understandings of collaborative conflict resolution from the world of legal and business mediation to the practice of psychotherapy. Her Power of Two and Power of Two Workbook– published in six foreign language editions–plus her interactive marriage education website PowerOfTwoMarriage.com, teach the communication skills for marriage success. Dr. Heitler’s most recent book and website combo, Prescriptions Without Pills, offers self-help versions of the techniques she uses in her clinical practice–techniques for relieving depression, anger, and anxiety plus strategies for sustaining well-being. My Struggle With Money, Depression & Anxiety (Does Money Buy Happiness?) The Hedonic Treadmill

11:36
QUESTION: Does Money Buy Happiness? The short answer: It can. The long answer? It can - but if you're not careful, it can have the opposite effect. ►► Watch this to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juO4zxsjSjw It’s a scientific fact that spending money on material things doesn’t make us happy. However, using your money to buy back your TIME allows you to spend more time with friends, family and pursuing hobbies. This means spending money on things like: Hiring a cleaner Hiring someone to mow the front lawn Having a chef prepare your meals Hiring a nanny to take care of your kids Buying back our time allows us to focus on the things we truly LOVE. And this has a direct, positive impact on happiness. QUESTION: Why Do Billionaires & Athletes Get Depressed? This can be explained using the hedonic treadmill as an example. You see, this is the scientifically observed tendency where all of us quickly return to a stable level of happiness. For example: If you won the lottery tomorrow, you’d get a HUGE boost of happiness. You’d be super happy. But eventually, you’ll return to your previous, baseline happiness level. Long-term it doesn’t matter. Most athletes and entrepreneurs fall into this trap. After reaching a goal, they enjoy the rush of happiness and achievement. After a while though, that goal becomes normalized, so they try and reach bigger goals to achieve that sense of happiness again. What we’re really doing (without realising), is associating success with happiness. And this is where we get trapped running our own hedonic treadmill. This is dangerous. You may have noticed that in the entrepreneurial community, there is a LOT of peer pressure to be always working. Always hustling. HOWEVER, this mindset can eventually result in something that is the total opposite: BURNOUT. A Swedish study showed that when we work, we fire different neurons in our brain. So of course, the more work we do, the more we engage them. However, doing this too much leads our brain to try and work more efficiently. So, it goes into survival mode and starts to rewire your brain so that your neurons start fire TOGETHER. This means it becomes harder to access different parts of your brain, such as the parts involved problem solving, focus, and emotional reasoning. QUESTION: How Can You Experience Happiness Every Day? While we get a big dose of happiness when something big happens, science has also shown that little things make us almost just as happy. For example: Eating a nice apple Giving someone a hug Exercising and treating your body right Drinking a nice cup of coffee The difference though, is that the happiness boost from these little things doesn’t last as long as the big ones. So, the key is to add lots and lots of these nice, little things into your life every day. Indirectly, this is also a sense of gratitude: The quality of being THANKFUL. And is an awesome way of experiencing genuine happiness from the INSIDE OUT. Rather than the outside in.
