Antidepressants Make it Harder to Empathize, Harder to Climax, and Harder to Cry.
Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Intelligent people never say these 16 phrases and words because they understand that words are powerful and cannot be retrieved once spoken. There are some words you wouldn’t want to say in public or around certain people because you don’t know how they’ll be interpreted. These phrases have the ability to make you look bad - even when the words are true. Avoiding them can improve communication skills instantly! For this reason, intelligent people never say these 16 phrases! When someone asks you to do something or thanks you for doing something, and you respond with “no problem,” you’re implying that his or her request should have been a problem. And phrases like “it’s up to you” or “I don’t care” or “whatever you want” really don’t encourage conversation. Saying that “this will only take a minute” undermines your skills and gives the impression that you rush through tasks. Life isn’t fair… But, saying “it’s not fair” suggests that you think life is supposed to be fair, which makes you look immature and naive. While the phrase “I told you so,” is bursting with conceit and superiority. It’s childish and immature. Also, no one always or never does anything. Phrases like “you always” or “you never” make people defensive and closed off to your message. Saying “this is the way it’s always been done” makes you sound lazy and archaic. Wishing someone “good luck” certainly isn’t the end of the world, but you can do better, because this phrase implies that they need luck to succeed. Using passive phrases like “I think” or “this may be a silly idea,” instantly writes off your credibility. Just like the word ‘think’, ‘try’ sounds tentative and suggests that you lack confidence in your ability to execute the task. People don’t like to hear “I can’t” because they think it means “I won’t.” And the phrase “as I said before” makes it sound as if you’re insulted by having to repeat yourself. The bottom line is, intelligent people are highly aware. Active listening is a sign of a high emotional intelligence, and social awareness helps you avoid those awkward moments when something comes out wrong and gets misunderstood. Therefore, intelligent people never say these 16 phrases! So think smart, talk intelligent. How to understand you're suffering from depression? How to get rid of depression which is a serious health condition that can’t be ignored? Depression is a serious matter that, unfortunately, doesn’t get talked about enough. Simply feeling a little sad can make us think that we're depressed, but that's not always the case…or is it? It's really common for depressed people to suddenly start experiencing aches and pains, most frequently in the joints or back. If at least 3 to 4 signs hit home for you, it most likely means that you have some form of depression. Basically, the more signs you’re showing, the more depressed you are. How to make it better? 7:34 The first thing you have to do is go to the doctor. According to psychotherapist Sean Grover, there are steps you can take in three areas of your life to make your mental state better. The first thing to take care of is your body. Start doing 30-minute workouts at least 3 times a week, get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and add more of your favorite foods to your diet, especially sugary ones. The second and equally important part is your mind. Try to explore the world around you as if you never have before. Finally, your spirit should also get a dose of treatment too. The best thing you can do here is meditation. Through it, you can learn to understand and listen to yourself on a deeper level. 10 Foods to Eat to Fight Depression
It’s normal to feel depressed once in a while, when it’s connected to loss, life’s struggles, or a hurt self- esteem. But if deep sadness and feelings of being hopeless, helpless, and worthless become a part of your life and stop you from living normally, you may have clinical depression, a common but serious mood disorder. 1. Green Tea Drinking tea, especially green tea, is connected to a much smaller risk for depression. Because it has so many antioxidants and amino acids, green tea can help you fight depression in a natural way. Drink 3 to 4 cups of green tea every day to help lift your mood and your overall health as well. 2. Almonds Almonds have a lot of magnesium, which make them good for fighting depression. This is because magnesium helps make serotonin, a “feel good” brain chemical. This mineral also helps you have energy. Snacking almonds every day will help change your mood in a great way. 3. Salmon Because salmon is full omega-3 fatty acids, it is great for fighting depression. People who have depression usually don’t take in enough omega-3 fatty acids, which helps the brain work properly by lowering the swelling. 4. Dark Chocolate Dark chocolate can help raise serotonin levels in the body, which is almost like antidepressants. It also has carbohydrates in the form of sugar, which will tell the body to make more serotonin. Dark chocolate will also slow down the making of stress hormones, which will therefore lessen anxiety. Another thing dark chocolate can do is lessen the effects of chronic fatigue syndrome, because of its flavonoid content. 5. Eggs Eggs are another great food for fighting depression. Avocados Because avocados have a great amount of omega-3 fatty acids they are a smart choice for people with depression. Blueberries Blueberries have a lot of antioxidants that help the brain work properly and raise cognitive functioning. They also help a lot against depression. In this video we look at how to become disciplined. Becoming more self-disciplined can be difficult, but I think it’s actually much easier than people realize. The key to becoming self-disciplined is to find your “North Star” meaning to find something that you are truly passionate about. When you are chasing after something that you really want, you will want to get up everyday and do the thing that you know you should be doing. Of course you will encounter road blocks a long the way, and at times you will loose the motivation to keep working. But because of how much you want to achieve your goals, you will have the discipline to keep doing it (most of the time) If you find your north star, you will find your self-discipline. In order to deal with depression and cope with your condition effectively, you first have to understand what causes depression. It may seem as if your depression is created by their being something factually wrong with you or your life, but that’s actually not true. If it was, then you would be forced to be dealing with depression in every moment that the facts were the same. But, that’s not the case. While your job, house, appearance, personality remain the same, you stop feeling depressed in any moment that you are distracted from your thoughts. That means that depression is created by thoughts not by facts. That means your feelings aren’t created by anything being wrong with you. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Recognize that who you are is not a depressed person. You are there, and feelings come and go. Sometimes sadness is here, sometimes joy, sometimes hopelessness. None of those feelings are who you are. They are a feeling in a moment. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Find what thoughts are creating your feelings of depression. In dealing with depression, any time you have the unwanted feelings of depression, it is because there are thoughts or stories that are being played in your mind. If you want to lose your depression, you first have to identify what specific stories or thoughts are going on that are creating the depression. Write these thoughts or stories down on paper. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Investigate the validity of the thoughts that are going on in your mind. If a thought says “I am worthless” or “I am a failure” question that assumption. Ask yourself “Can I think of any reasons, evidence, or examples as to why the opposite might be true?” Don’t try to convince yourself that you’re great. Try to ask questions that enable you to discover that your original negative assumptions about yourself and your life might not be true or valid.
