8 Signs You're Suffering from Depression Without Knowing It

11:31
How to understand you're suffering from depression? How to get rid of depression which is a serious health condition that can’t be ignored? Depression is a serious matter that, unfortunately, doesn’t get talked about enough. Simply feeling a little sad can make us think that we're depressed, but that's not always the case…or is it? Let's find out what signs are hinting that you might actually be suffering from “the plague of the 21st century”. How to recognize depression? 0:54 The most common signs of depression are the following: you constantly feel down and tired. Your self-esteem has hit rock bottom. You have concentration and memory problems and troubles sleeping. Your weight changes, it can go either way: you all of a sudden gain several pounds or your weight drops drastically. Nothing, including your favorite food, TV show, video game, or even meeing up with your besties, brings you pleasure. You experience mood swings, and you can suddenly become extremely short-tempered with a lack of basic tolerance. Your health deteriorates. It's really common for depressed people to suddenly start experiencing aches and pains, most frequently in the joints or back. If at least 3 to 4 signs hit home for you, it most likely means that you have some form of depression. Basically, the more signs you’re showing, the more depressed you are. How to make it better? 7:34 The first thing you have to do is go to the doctor. According to psychotherapist Sean Grover, there are steps you can take in three areas of your life to make your mental state better. The first thing to take care of is your body. Start doing 30-minute workouts at least 3 times a week, get at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and add more of your favorite foods to your diet, especially sugary ones. The second and equally important part is your mind. Try to explore the world around you as if you never have before. Finally, your spirit should also get a dose of treatment too. The best thing you can do here is meditation. Through it, you can learn to understand and listen to yourself on a deeper level. Try to explore the world around you as if you never have before. Your spirit should also get a dose of treatment too with meditation. -“Seasonal depression” can be treated with natural substances. Experts also recommend to start seeing a doctor earlier and doing it regularly. Do you have any methods of your own on how to fight depression? Tell us in the comments below! All images/videos by Alila Medical Media are for information purposes ONLY and are NOT intended to replace professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Serotonin, or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a neurotransmitter involved in many brain and body functions and is commonly known as the substance of well-being and happiness. Serotonin is produced in specialized neurons found mostly in the Raphe nuclei located along the midline of the brainstem. The axons of these neurons form extensive serotonergic pathways that reach almost every part of the central nervous system, including the cerebellum and the spinal cord. This is why it’s not surprising that serotonin is implicated in a vast array of brain functions, including sleep and wake cycle, appetite, mood regulation, memory and learning, temperature control, … among others. Serotonin is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan and is stored in small vesicles within the nerve terminal. When a serotonergic neuron is stimulated, serotonin is released into the synaptic cleft where it binds to and activates serotonin-receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. Serotonin action is then TERMINATED via removal of its molecules from the synaptic space. This is accomplished through a special protein called serotonin-transporter. Low levels of serotonin in the brain have been associated with depressive disorders and current treatments for depression aim to increase these levels. The most commonly prescribed medications, called “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors”, or SSRIs, act by blocking serotonin reuptake by the transmitting neurons. This results in elevated levels of serotonin in the synaptic space and its prolonged action on the receiving neuron. The SSRIs have developed into the drugs of choice because they produce fewer side effects thanks to their selective action on serotonin alone and no other neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, because serotonin is involved in a wide range of brain functions, the side effects remain significant and may progress to a potentially dangerous condition known as "serotonin syndrome". This syndrome is generally caused by a combination of two or more drugs used to raise the serotonin levels in the brain. If the medications are not discontinued, the condition may become fatal. Nonpharmacologic methods of raising brain serotonin have shown promising results in recent studies. It has been suggested that positive mood induction, either self-induced or due to psychotherapy, correlates with INCREASED serotonin synthesis in the brain. The interaction between serotonin synthesis and mood may therefore be 2-way, with serotonin influencing mood and mood influencing serotonin. Other methods include exposure to bright light and tryptophan-rich diets. To note, however, that serotonin-rich food such as bananas would NOT work because serotonin, unlike tryptophan, can NOT cross the blood brain barrier. Finally, although it sounds like a cliché, physical exercise maybe the most effective and safest way of improving mood. Several studies suggest that serotonin levels are increased with vigorous physical activity and that these elevated levels are maintained for several days after the exercise.

Antidepressants Make it Harder to Empathize, Harder to Climax, and Harder to Cry.

06:51
Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

10 Foods to Eat to Fight Depression

06:00
It’s normal to feel depressed once in a while, when it’s connected to loss, life’s struggles, or a hurt self- esteem. But if deep sadness and feelings of being hopeless, helpless, and worthless become a part of your life and stop you from living normally, you may have clinical depression, a common but serious mood disorder. 1. Green Tea Drinking tea, especially green tea, is connected to a much smaller risk for depression. Because it has so many antioxidants and amino acids, green tea can help you fight depression in a natural way. Drink 3 to 4 cups of green tea every day to help lift your mood and your overall health as well. 2. Almonds Almonds have a lot of magnesium, which make them good for fighting depression. This is because magnesium helps make serotonin, a “feel good” brain chemical. This mineral also helps you have energy. Snacking almonds every day will help change your mood in a great way. 3. Salmon Because salmon is full omega-3 fatty acids, it is great for fighting depression. People who have depression usually don’t take in enough omega-3 fatty acids, which helps the brain work properly by lowering the swelling. 4. Dark Chocolate Dark chocolate can help raise serotonin levels in the body, which is almost like antidepressants. It also has carbohydrates in the form of sugar, which will tell the body to make more serotonin. Dark chocolate will also slow down the making of stress hormones, which will therefore lessen anxiety. Another thing dark chocolate can do is lessen the effects of chronic fatigue syndrome, because of its flavonoid content. 5. Eggs Eggs are another great food for fighting depression. This is because eggs, which are packed with protein and other nutrients also have zinc. Zinc is an important micronutrient that the body needs to help create neurotransmitters, and to keep them working properly. By eating foods full of zinc, like eggs, you can fight zinc deficiency and depression and maybe even other disorders. Eggs are also one of the few foods that have vitamin D. A lack of vitamin D is connected to depression and other mental health problems. 6. Bananas If you’re ever feeling low or depressed, try eating 1 or 2 bananas. Bananas have a lot of tryptophan which will raise the body’s serotonin level. They also help make tyrosine, which is needed for making norepinephrine and dopamine, two important neurotransmitters that can change your mood. 7. Avocados Because avocados have a great amount of omega-3 fatty acids they are a smart choice for people with depression. Avocados are full of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps lessen stress and relax a person. 8. Blueberries Blueberries have a lot of antioxidants that help the brain work properly and raise cognitive functioning. They also help a lot against depression. Blueberries also have mood- boosting nutrients like B- complex as well as selenium, zinc, and potassium. All these nutrients help neurologic and brain health in a good way. 9. Spinach Spinach is another great idea for fighting depression, because it is filled with nutrients like folic acid, magnesium, and zinc. These are important ingredients for brain health and fighting signs of depression. Try to eat more spinach by using it as a salad or for a green smoothie, or by adding it to your hot meals. 10. Asparagus Another green veggie that’s good for fighting depression is asparagus. Asparagus helps raise low folic acid levels that are linked to depression. It also has B vitamins which can help boost the mood. Asparagus has tryptophan, which helps create serotonin in the brain and blocks depression and anxiety. 10 Expert Tips on How to Fight Gout Attack

10:02
What is gout? This is basically joint inflammation in the ankle, wrist, elbow, knee, or (more often than not) in the big toe. It’s caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood, a condition called hyperuricemia. The intense pain it brings along can last for days, weeks, and even months on end! If left untreated, it can lead to joint deformities or even physical disability. Like any health problem, gout doesn’t discriminate. It can affect anyone, including famous actors, athletes, and writers. In fact, Benjamin Franklin missed a lot of the meetings that were held to draft the Declaration of Independence because of gout! This extremely painful condition can put a hamper on your daily activities and your quality of life as a whole. That’s why Bright Side has turned to the experts and gathered a list of 10 tips on how to fight gout! TIMESTAMPS: What gout is 0:28 Get rid of excess weight 0:55 Check your family history 1:50 It occurs differently in men and women 2:07 Certain medications can trigger gout 2:40 Certain health conditions can increase the risk of developing gout 3:09 Change your diet 3:31 Eat more foods that can help you manage gout attacks and pain 4:44 Make use of natural remedies 6:52 Be careful about exercising 8:03 Some health warnings about using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs 8:57 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - The body produces more insulin when people are overweight or obese. If you have high levels of insulin in your body, it slows down the elimination of the uric acid that causes gout. - Genetics also play a role here. If someone in your family has had gout, you do have a higher risk of getting it too. - Gout occurs differently in men and women. It’s the main cause of inflammatory arthritis for guys in their 30s and 40s, although men in their late 50s can also get it sometimes. - Medications like diuretics (or water pills), low-dose aspirin, immunosuppressants like cyclosporine and tacrolimus, as well as drugs containing salicylate have been found to trigger gout attacks. - Gout is historically known as the “disease of kings” or “the rich man’s disease” because it’s triggered by foods that only wealthy people could afford in the past: seafood and red meat. - Changing your diet doesn’t mean just cutting a bunch of bad foods out of it. Here are some products you should eat more of to prevent gout attacks. - When you’re under attack, doctors recommend staying in bed and putting ice on the affected area. You may lessen the pain by removing any clothes on the joint that’s flaring up. - Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that adults should be physically active for at least 2½ hours per week. In order to deal with depression and cope with your condition effectively, you first have to understand what causes depression. It may seem as if your depression is created by their being something factually wrong with you or your life, but that’s actually not true. If it was, then you would be forced to be dealing with depression in every moment that the facts were the same. But, that’s not the case. While your job, house, appearance, personality remain the same, you stop feeling depressed in any moment that you are distracted from your thoughts. That means that depression is created by thoughts not by facts. That means your feelings aren’t created by anything being wrong with you. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Recognize that who you are is not a depressed person. You are there, and feelings come and go. Sometimes sadness is here, sometimes joy, sometimes hopelessness. None of those feelings are who you are. They are a feeling in a moment. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Find what thoughts are creating your feelings of depression. In dealing with depression, any time you have the unwanted feelings of depression, it is because there are thoughts or stories that are being played in your mind. If you want to lose your depression, you first have to identify what specific stories or thoughts are going on that are creating the depression. Write these thoughts or stories down on paper. How to deal with depression, and cope with your condition? Investigate the validity of the thoughts that are going on in your mind. If a thought says “I am worthless” or “I am a failure” question that assumption. Ask yourself “Can I think of any reasons, evidence, or examples as to why the opposite might be true?” Don’t try to convince yourself that you’re great. Try to ask questions that enable you to discover that your original negative assumptions about yourself and your life might not be true or valid. I hope that this video about how to deal with depression to be helpful. View my website here: http://www.liveinthemoment.org/ View my disclaimer here: http://www.liveinthemoment.org/disclaimer/

Have you been feeling slightly depressed recently? Well in this depression test video we will be going over and seeing if in fact you are depressed or not. In this video, we will be going over 8 questions to see if you are depressed or not. Depression is something a lot of people suffer, some people who become depressed can easily snap out of it however many people who develop depression find it extremely difficult to snap out of it. These questions are simple 'YES' or 'NO' questions. The questions are as followed 1) Do you have little pleasure or interest in doing things? 2) Do you feel hopeless or down? 3) Do you have trouble sleeping, either sleeping too much or not at all? 4) Do you feel tired or have little energy? 5) Do you overeat or have a poor appetite? 6) Do you feel like a failure or you've let people down? 7) Do you have trouble concentrating? 8) Do you have any harmful thoughts towards yourself? Now, Let's begin with the scoring process. If you have said 'YES' to 2 or fewer questions then it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY you are suffering from depression. If you have said 'YES' on 2-4 questions then it is LIKELY you have MILD depression. You have nothing to worry about if you have mild depression and it is something you can easily snap out of with the right help and support. I will be going over in my next few videos how to overcome MILD depression. If you said 'YES' 5 or more times then it is HIGHLY LIKELY you are extremely depressed. Why Am I Depressed? - The Shocking Truth Behind Your Depression

22:40
Why Am I Depressed? - The deep, root cause of your depression and the truth you need to know in order to be happy again. The Ultimate Life Purpose Course - Create Your Dream Career: http://www.actualized.org/life-purpose-course Leo's Top 140 Self Help Books http://www.actualized.org/books Full Video Transcript Here: http://www.actualized.org/articles/why-am-i-depressed Video Summary: The word "depression" is thrown around a lot these days in our society. Some associate it with their bank balance, while others are taking anti-depressants for their symptoms. It wasn't always this way. Why is the incidence of depression higher today? While some people are clinically depressed, the majority of depressed people are self-diagnosed. Why is depression more prevalent in the U.S. than elsewhere in the developed world? Are third-world people less susceptible to depression, or do they simply have too many competing issues with which to cope? Regardless of your diagnosis or lack thereof, deciphering the source of your depression can identify helpful strategies to ease symptoms. Happiness is partially genetic, minimally dependent on life circumstances, and the rest is derived from our psychology. If you're searching for a way to escape the pall of depression, consider whether you're casting yourself as a victim. Take responsibility for more of your circumstances. Try to unhook your identity from your problems. Determine if you're living inauthentically, which can lead to depression. Multiple DIY techniques can ease symptoms of depression -- rather than relying on medication, such as introspection, meditation, and exercise.

Depression and anxiety: How inequality is driving the mental health crisis | Johann Hari

04:28
Expressions like "feeling down" or "feeling low" are more literal than we think, says Lost Connections author Johann Hari. A 30-year field study of wild African baboons by the incredible Stanford University professor Robert Sapolsky has shown that there is a remarkable relationship between depression, anxiety, and social hierarchies. Male baboons—who live in a very strict pecking order—suffer the most psychological stress when their social status is insecure, or when they are on the bottom rung, looking up at the luxuries of others. Does it sound familiar yet? "If you live in the United States... we’re at the greatest levels of inequality since the 1920s," says Hari. "There’s a few people at the very top, there’s a kind of precarious middle, and there’s a huge and swelling bottom." It's no coincidence that mental health gets poorer as the wealth gap continues to widen: depression and anxiety are socioeconomic diseases. The silver lining is that this relationship has been discovered. Could an economic revolution end the depression epidemic? And, most curiously, what can we learn from the Amish on this front? Johann Hari is the author of Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/johann-hari-inequality-is-a-driver-of-depression-and-anxiety Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: When I feel depressed, like loads of people I say, “I feel down,” right? And as I was learning about the causes of depression and anxiety for my book 'Lost Connections' I started to realize—I don’t think that’s a metaphor. There’s this amazing professor at Stanford called Robert Sapolsky who, in his early twenties, went to live with a troop of baboons in Kenya. And it was his job to figure out: when are baboons most stressed out? So his job was to hit them with little tranquilizer darts and then take a blood test and measure something called cortisol, which is a hormone that baboons and us release when we’re stressed. And baboons live in this hierarchy—so the females don’t, interestingly—but the men live in a very strict hierarchy. So if there’s 30 men, number one knows he’s above number two. Number two knows he’s above number three. Number 12 knows he’s above number 13. And that really determines a lot; it determines who you get to have sex with, it determines what you get to eat, it determines whether you get to sit in the shade or you’re pushed out into the heat. So really it's significant where you are in the hierarchy. And what Professor Sapolsky found is that baboons are most stressed in two situations. One is when their status is insecure. So if you’re the top guy and someone’s circling which comes for you, you will be massively stressed. And the other situation is when you feel you’re at the bottom of the hierarchy, you’ve been kind of humiliated. And what Professor Sapolsky noticed—and then it was later developed by other scientists—is, when you feel you’ve been pushed to the bottom, what you do is you show something called a submission gesture. So you, baboons will raise— I say “you,” I assume no baboons are watching this, maybe they are—a baboon will put its body down physically or put it’s head down or put its bottom in the air and it will cover its head. So it’s clearly seems to be communicating: “Just leave me alone. You’ve beaten me, okay? You’ve beaten me.” And what lots of scientists, like Professor Paul Gilbert in Britain and Professor Kate Pickett and Professor Richard Wilkinson, also in Britain, have really developed is this idea that actually what human depression is, in part—not entirely, but in part—is a form of a submission gesture. It’s a way of saying, “I can’t cope with this anymore,” right. Particularly people who feel they’ve been pushed to the bottom of hierarchies. Or who feel, if you remember the other stressful situations when your status is insecure, it’s a way of just going, “Okay, I retreat. I don’t want this fight anymore. You’ve beaten me.” It’s a kind of very strong evolutionary impulse where you feel you’re under attack, to just submit in the hope that the stress and anxiety will then go away, that the sources of the stress and anxiety will then go away. And one thing that’s so important, and that’s what Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson really developed, is they’ve shown that as inequality grows, depression and anxiety grow. They’ve shown this is a very robust effect, right. This helps us to explain it. If you live in Norway your status is relatively secure, right. No one’s that high, no one’s that low. Movement between where you are is not so extreme.
