Antidepressants Make it Harder to Empathize, Harder to Climax, and Harder to Cry.
Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: The main kind of antidepressant that is the most popularly prescribed are the SSRIs and these are medicines that increase serotonin transmission. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Antidepressants & Pregnancy: The risks and potential harm to normal fetal development
A sample lecture from "Antidepressants & Pregnancy: The risks and possible harm to normal fetal development", a course taught by Adam Urato, an OB-GYN and researcher affiliated with Tufts Medical Center. http://education.madinamerica.com/p/a... The course details the role that serotonin plays in normal fetal development, and reviews the extensive literature, from both animal studies and human studies, that warns of potential harm to the fetus and newborn child from exposure to drugs (antidepressants) that disrupt normal serotonin function. Dr. Urato also discusses the financial conflicts of interest that have led to a societal failure to warn pregnant women of this risk. 1.5 CEU/CME available. This course is produced by Mad in America Continuing Education.

What are the pros and cons of an epidural?
Getting an epidural is a personal choice you should make with education you receive from your doctor. Pain is subjective. Everyone experiences it differently. It's going to hurt more during labor than you might think, especially if it's your first baby. You don't know what to expect. Labor is usually the most significant pain a woman has felt. We ask patients to rate their pain from 0-10. First time moms may say their pain is a 10, even when they're 1 centimeter. They just don't know how bad it's going to get. Some women deliver without using any form of analgesia, whether that be IV pain medication or an epidural. They make it through. There are pros and cons to getting an epidural and it depends on the situation you want. A pro is controlled pain. A common misconception about epidurals is they relieve all sensation. A good epidural is one where you can feel pressure. You may know you're having a contraction and this helps with pushing. Women who don't want to feel anything are disappointed they still feel pressure when they're contracting. But it doesn't hurt; it takes away the pain. But epidurals aren't perfect. Sometimes you have to be re-dosed during labor and receive just a little bit more medication to keep you on top of the pain. We keep you on one side during labor; that's best for the baby. It doesn't have to do with an epidural. The side that's down will be more numb. The side that's up may hurt more, so we flip you over and give you more medication. One possible downside to having an epidural is you can't move. You can't walk around. You may have a little control over your legs to shift yourself in the bed, but you can't get up and walk. Some see that as a con. You need to have a catheter to drain your bladder but it goes and out when you're numb. There are also benefits to having an epidural. Many studies show that epidurals slow the progress of labor, which they can if you get it too soon. But, they can also speed up labor because if you can't control your pain and breathe properly-- in fact, if you don't breathe properly and take in enough oxygen and blow off the proper amount of carbon dioxide, it messes up the carbon dioxide and oxygen balance in your blood and that affects all of your organs including the uterus and circulation to your baby. It's very important to breathe properly. Make sure you're in control. If you're not in control, it's a good time to start thinking about an epidural because it can halt your progress. I've taken care of patients who have been 7 centimeters for 4 hours until they get an epidural and then 20 minutes later, they're 10 centimeters and ready to push and have their baby. There are instances where it can speed it up. Sometimes it slows it down if you get it too soon. Some doctors feel another benefit to an epidural is when it comes time to push the baby out, you're able to do controlled pushes instead of when you don't have an epidural, that instinct causes you to push as hard as you can with all your might and often times, that increases your chances of tearing. Recovery might be a little bit better after having an epidural. Now, as with any procedure, there's always risks. The biggest risks are infection and bleeding but many things are done to reduce this risk and we know that a possible side effect of an epidural is having your blood pressure drop. In efforts to decrease that effect, we give you a lot of fluid beforehand through your IV. This increases your blood pressure so when it drops from the effects of the epidural, it keeps it even. If it drops a little bit lower than we expect, there's easy ways to bring it back up and it's usually inconsequential to you and the baby. Possible risks of getting an epidural. One of the biggest ones is a spinal headache and this happens 1% of the time where afterwards, you could have one of the worst headaches you've ever had in your life. But, it's not permanent and there are easy fixes to it. There are also other risks that can be associated with the placement of it. The medication can go into a blood vessel that's in your back and the anesthesiologist is likely to ask you after they've finished with the procedure, do you have any ringing in your ears, funny tastes in your mouth, dizziness, those sorts of things. Those can be indications it's gone into a blood vessel instead of into the epidural space. The anesthesiologist would just try it again, place it in the proper place, and get you comfortable. In very rare circumstances, it can cause a little persistent numbness and tingling after the time period where your epidural should have worn off. This is about 1 in 10,000. It's rare. If you have more questions, ask your OB provider, the nurses, and anesthesiologist at the hospital. They'll answer your questions and assist you. If you have any other questions for me,ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/intermountainmoms and recommend us to your friends and family, too.

Folic acid is Vitamin B9 which is usually present in dark green leafy vegetables, in meat, in potatoes unless it is over cooked or egg whites, brussel sprouts. These are the sources of Folic acid. Folic acid is very important to avoid neural tube defects to the fetuses, the proper brain and the spine development of the baby. As of recent guidelines, folic acid is started pre pregnancy 2 – 3mionth s pre pregnancy to avoid neural tube defects in tie baby. Folic acid is taken upto the first trimester, Beyond first trimester, even if you take folic acid there is no problem, if you take beyond 20 weeks also there is no problem. Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin. So its excess goes off in urine. So it is not stored as such to cause any side effects to the mother. How can I deal with depression during pregnancy?
Having been pregnant before, I can relate to women who say that pregnancy is just draining - physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually - especially during the first trimester, because you're nauseous, you may or may not be throwing up, you're just so tired, and this can naturally make you feel a little bit depressed. You lack energy and motivation to go anywhere or do anything, and you may start to feel yourself naturally detach from friends and family a little bit till you're 16 to 20 weeks and you start to feel better. And all of this can cause you to be a little bit depressed, but depression in and of itself is not a symptom of pregnancy, it's not normal, and it's not something you have to endure. So if you notice that you're depressed to the point where you don't want to care for yourself, and you have other children that you don't want to care for, if you have obligations (like work) that you just don't want to fulfill, if you feel like it's affecting your relationships with family and friends to the point where they're also withdrawing from you, if you're having panic attacks, anxiety - talk with your doctor. And after asking more specific questions, they'll decide if further investigation or treatment is necessary, and usually, that comes in the form of medication and/or therapy. In addition to medication and therapy, there are things that you can do from home. You may not feel like it, but exercise can do wonders for you, so if you weren't exercising prior to getting pregnant, just start by walking each day for 15 to 20 minutes and slowly increase it to about a half hour per day. You can also pick up the pace a little bit, but just getting out and getting some fresh air and exercising can make you feel so much better about yourself. Also make sure you're eating enough, you're drinking enough, and that you're taking time out for yourself. Go get a massage, sit down and read a good book, just do something that helps you relax, and make a conscious effort to do something for 15 to 20 minutes for yourself each day. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

New Study Suggests Antidepressants Safe During Pregnancy
A new study from Northwestern University suggests that antidepressants won't cause newborns to be cranky or put them at higher risk for developing other problems. Many women fear that taking antidepressants during pregnancy will harm their fetus. Study author Amy Yang said in a university news release, "Most pregnant women are naturally going to worry more about their baby's health than their own, and might forego taking an antidepressant to avoid these neonatal signs." Yang, a biostatistician in Northwestern's Center for the Study and Treatment of Depressive Disorders, went on to say, "But with the information from this study, they can be reassured that the baby's behavior at two to four weeks after birth is not likely due to exposure to medication or depression." http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/06/07/Antidepressants-safe-for-baby-during-pregnancy-researchers-say/7751496853870/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
