4 Psychological Terms That You're Using Incorrectly

At some point, you’ve probably heard someone use any or all of these four words to describe someone. But there’s a really excellent chance that person had no idea what these terms mean. But SciShow is here to help clear up some of these definitions, and explain why the weather isn’t schizophrenic, and how your ex probably isn’t actually a psychopath. Antidepressants Make it Harder to Empathize, Harder to Climax, and Harder to Cry.

06:51
Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: The main kind of antidepressant that is the most popularly prescribed are the SSRIs and these are medicines that increase serotonin transmission. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

20 Medical Lies That You Still Believe

14:14
Many of the long-lived medical beliefs are actually wrong. There are 20 health tips that are worth following and which are better left in the past. Do you still believe that humans have five senses and using a microwave can give you cancer? In that case, you will be surprised to see those and other health myths exploded. After watching this video, you will have a great excuse to eat at night. Myths: Pregnancy lasts 9 months 0:36 If you are overweight, you are unhealthy 0:58 Organic food is free of pesticides 1:41 Honey is a natural sugar, and it's better than processed sugar 2:29 You can catch a cold because of cold weather 3:12 Chicken broth is the best cure for everything 3:40 Eating carrots can give you excellent night vision 4:08 You use only 10% of your brain 4:53 Using microwaves can give you cancer 5:34 Yogurt can improve digestion 6:10 Eating at night will make you fat 6:53 Milk is good for you 7:39 Humans have five senses 8:20 Chocolate can give you acne 8:59 Blind people can’t see anything 9:28 You should always stretch before you begin exercising 9:56 Too much salt is unhealthy 10:34 Your tongue is divided into four parts 11:15 If you crack your knuckles, you will get arthritis 12:05 Only a direct blow to the head can cause a concussion 12:39 SUMMARY - Each pregnancy is different. It turns out that only 5% of babies arrive on their supposed due date. - The death rate of an overweight person who exercises regularly is half of the death rate of a person who falls into the standard weight category. - There is a list of more than 20 chemicals that have been approved to be put in organic food production by US Organic Standards. It must also be kept in mind that despite regulations, even organic food is susceptible to chemical flow from fields or nearby factories. - There are 64 calories in one tablespoon of honey and 49 calories per tablespoon of sugar. - More people catch a cold in the winter as we spend more time indoors which is good for viruses because they can spread easier. - In fact, chicken broth makes you feel warm on the inside working as a placebo. It doesn’t actually cure anything. - The presence of vitamin A in carrots can help improve your eyesight, but it’s merely a myth that it can help you obtain night vision. - Several scientists and experiments have proven that almost the entire brain is active during a person’s lifespan. The brain’s different parts are all responsible for our body’s performance, and 10% of the brain could not handle the functioning of your entire body. - Microwaves do not cause cancer, and this has been confirmed by some of the top researchers. If we look at the heating method of microwaves, we’ll see that they produce radiation that heats up the water molecules present in the food, thus making it warm. - The probiotics have slowly entered our systems, and they’re ruling it. The 6 Signs of High Functioning Depression

07:05
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy High functioning depression isn’t an actual diagnosis, it’s just more catchy than the real diagnostic term, “dysthymia” is. Dysthymia (also called Persistent Depressive Disorder) is described in the DSM as “depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, as indicated by either subjective account or observation by others, for at least two years,” and includes the presence of two or more of the following symptoms, “Poor appetite or overeating; insomnia or hypersomnia; low energy or fatigue; low self-esteem; poor concentration or difficulty making decisions; feelings of hopelessness.” People with dysthymia may still be able to get up, go to work or school, and from the outside look just fine. But inside they are exhausted, frustrated, and feel terrible about their situation. To find out if you are struggling with high functioning depression or dysthymia, here are some of the most common symptoms: Avoiding social situations: Often when we are able to push ourselves to function in our daily life, it leaves no extra energy for socializing. We may find ourselves cancelling plans, just wanting to be alone a lot, and withdrawing from those we love and care for. Feeling extra irritable: When we aren’t feeling our best we can have little patience for people in our lives. We may find everyone is getting on our nerves, and we could even start fights with those we love. Notice if everything people do around you seems to be frustrating and annoying. Are you constantly tired? Are you barely able get all that you need to get completed every day and feel wiped out afterwards? Are you always tired, when you used to feel like you had so much energy? It could be dysthymia Do you struggle to concentrate? Reading and re-reading emails still not knowing what it said. Is it hard to focus, even to watch TV? Many of my clients will tell me that they struggle to even follow a plot in a movie or tv show, and will have to go back to rewatch portions of it. This can be so frustrating and make school and work that much more difficult. Are you using an unhealthy coping skill more and more? This could be drinking more alcohol, zoning out in front of the TV or playing a video game, or even over or undereating. If you find yourself slipping back into old (or even new) unhealthy habits, please reach out and talk to someone about it. Getting a handle on these issues early allows us to find healthier coping skills to replace them more easily. Constant worry about past or future: I believe this sign occurs because anxiety and depression are close friends. Do you struggle to get to sleep because you can’t stop going over that stupid thing you said years ago? Maybe you can’t sleep because you are so worried about tomorrow or next week? If you always feel like you are unable to control and stop those negative, worry focused thought cycles, it could be high functioning depression. WHAT CAN WE DO? If you found yourself nodding along as I talked about these 5 common signs, please reach out for help. Those with dysthymia or high functioning depression often go untreated for years! Don’t let that be you! The sooner we reach out and get some help the less time we will spend feeling bad. For many people all that is needed is talk therapy, while others find medication to be the most helpful. Whatever helps you, make sure you speak up, reach out and get it as soon as possible. Cause it can and will get better. Anxiety Hurts

03:21
Everybody knows what anxiety feels like - it's annoying and counterproductive and apparently useless, so why does it exist? It turns out your anxiety isn't useless at all - it's a result of the sympathetic nervous system (in charge of the fight or flight response), which lets you respond immediately to threats and can also help you meet that looming deadline. But you don't want your SNS running the whole show - chronic anxiety not only feels crappy, it damages your cells, alters your brain chemistry, and can exacerbate a wide range of health problems. Hank has the whole story in this episode of SciShow. Like SciShow? Want to help support us, and also get things to put on your walls, cover your torso and hold your liquids? Long Term Effects of Anti-Depressant Medication with Robert Whitaker

15:40
Schizophrenics in the United States currently fare worse than patients in the world’s poorest countries. Medical journalist Robert Whitaker argues that modern treatments for the severely mentally ill are just old medicine in new bottles, and that we as a society are deeply deluded about their efficacy. The widespread use of lobotomies in the 1920's and 1930's gave way in the 1950's to electroshock and a wave of new drugs. In what is perhaps Robert Whitaker’s most damning revelation, he examines how drug companies in the 1980's and 1990's skewed their studies to prove that new anti-psychotic drugs were more effective than the old, while keeping patients in the dark about dangerous side effects. Robert Whitaker raises important questions about our obligations to the mad, the meaning of “insanity,” and what we value most about the human mind. But today, we’re showing you some of the strangest facts around that are definitely true, but you probably wouldn’t believe them even if you saw them first hand with your own two eyes. Today, we’re showing you 10 Ridiculous Facts That Are Actually True. So, what weird facts have we got lined up for you today? We’ll be talking you through the strangest connection between intelligence and hairy chests, and the real reason why pirates wore eyepatches. Here’s a clue, it wasn’t to look scary or to cover a missing eye. We’ll be showing you what happens if a duckling meets a human before its own birth mother, and how then it’ll think it’s a human for the rest of its life.
