How Long to Take Anti-Depressants | Mood Disorders

03:06
Watch more Mood and Personality Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498608-How-Long-to-Take-AntiDepressants-Mood-Disorders I want to start off by clarifying that it is difficult to talk about any category of medication as a whole because within every category there is gonna be individual medication that have certain variations but in general what we are talking about medications for depression, we are talking about anti-depressant medications that are used primarily to treat depression and anxiety. So, the key thing to understand in terms of is how long you have to take the medication is first, these medications unfortunately can take from six to eight and as long a twelve weeks to fully kick in and if you don't understand from the beginning that it can take that long, it can be very frustrating and unfortunately many patients will stop the medications, right about the time that they are just about to start working because they didn't understand that they need to give the medications a full length of time before they start working. Admittedly, we don't fully understand why the medications take so long to work but we do know that studies have shown again and again that even people who don't have benefits from the medications after taking them for six weeks or eight weeks, can get benefit just a few weeks later, if they stick with it. So, the first thing to understand is that, you should stay on to your anti-depressant medication for at least three months before you decide that it's not working. The other side of the picture is, once the medication has worked and you are feeling better, how long you have to stand the medication? There is no simple answer for this question either. What I tell my patients is, as a rule of thumb, be well for six months before you start thinking about coming off the medications and the reason for that is, depression takes its toll on the brain and in my view, you do need to allow time for the brain to heal, so that you don't get depressed, as soon as you come off the medication and different factors will influence, what time makes sense and this can be best done by having a good working relationship with your psychiatrist, but as I said as a rule of thumb, start the clock from when you start feeling well and then after six months you can start a discussion about when it makes sense to do a trial off with medications. Now, if you have been through a few trials off with medications, and you have got depressed each time in general, once that's happened twice, it's usually advisable to then decide to stay on the medications. So, certainly there are people, who get depressed, get on treatment, get better and then come off the medications and are fine. There are some people who get depressed again but can go through that cycle again but once that happens three times, it's advisable to stay on the medication, but again that's an individual decision that each person should make with their doctor.

Depression Medication | Child Psychology

Watch more How to Understand Child Psychology videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507745-Depression-Medication-Child-Psychology Because depression in teenagers and children is due to a neurochemical imbalance different types of medication options are available. It's very important to talk to your medical doctor or your health professional to find out what individual medication may work best for your child. Because we do know that depression has a genetic component, oftentimes the medications that are useful for another family member are also helpful for the child. It's also very important for parents to know that if they start a medication with their child stay in very close contact with their physician, so that they can describe different signs and symptoms or particular side effects. It's also very important to know that sometimes the first medication is not always the best medication. It's a process, but as long as you work closely with your physician you can find the right medication for your child. This is just a brief overview of some of the medication options and strategies when we're working with childhood depression.

Is Depression Medication Addictive? | Mood Disorders

01:48
Watch more Mood and Personality Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498574-Is-Depression-Medication-Addictive-Mood-Disorders There are a few different things to understand about this question. First of all, there's a problem with terminology in understanding exactly what one means by addictive. I think a better way, and a more useful way, to understand what the consequences are, is to ask your doctor and understand what happens, or what the process is for stopping the medication. It's important to understand that not all anti-depressant medication is created equal; so you can't have a simple answer to that question for all medications. There are some medications that are complicated in terms of the way that you stop them, and there are other medications that you can just stop taking, without any complications. So, the important question to ask is "what are the risks", and "what's the process" for coming off of the medications. In general the idea of a medication being addictive is somewhat associated with the idea of whether there's withdrawal in stopping the medication; are there physical and psychological symptoms associated with coming off of the medication? And that's one way that can be useful in terms of thinking about whether or not a medication is addictive. But as I said, it's more useful to simply think about "what is the process", and "what are the complications" in stopping a medication. It's important to keep in mind that just because a particular medication has withdrawal symptoms, or is difficult to stop, doesn't mean that another, different anti-depressant will necessarily have the same issues. And these are things that are important to understand before starting the medication, so you can make an informed decision about choosing the right medication for you.

How to Breastfeed: Taking Antidepressants

01:40
Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge: http://bit.ly/MMASurgeEp1 Some mothers who suffer from depression may be worried about their ability to breastfeed their baby while taking anti-depressants. In general, you shouldn't have to jeopardize breastfeeding if you have depression.  Anti-depressant medications affect mothers and babies differently during both the pregnancy and lactation. The first thing you should do is seek expert advice from a doctor and lactation consultant. Make sure to keep in close contact with them.  Talk to your doctor to determine which medication is best to treat your depression. Then discuss the medication with your lactation consultant to find out if it is compatible with breastfeeding and your baby. Each medication can affect the mother and baby differently, so it's important for your doctor to work in conjunction with a lactation consultant to find the best solution for you and your baby.  For more information about medication compatibility, visit the website of the Infant Risk Center at InfantRisk.com. You can find details about medications and their effects on breastfeeding babies and mothers.  In some cases, you can manage your depression with non-drug methods, such as exercise, taking omega-3 fatty acids, using St. John's wort or phototherapy. Talk to your doctor about alternative options. Read more by visiting our page at: http://www.mahalo.com/courses/how-to-breastfeed/medical-breastfeeding-questions/anti-depressants//

Who Should Take Depression Medication? | Mood Disorders

02:00
Watch more Mood and Personality Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498587-Who-Should-Take-Depression-Medication-Mood-Disorders The question about who takes depression medication is complicated because the terminology can be so confusing. Medications that are called anti-depressants, while they are used to treat depression, they're also used appropriately to treat a lot of other illnesses, and in some cases, they're used inappropriately to treat other illnesses because relatively speaking the side effect profiles are so relatively minor compared to other medications that are there. Anti-depressants were named as a class because it was initially found that they helped with depression, but overtime it was found that they were also just as effective for certain anxiety symptoms. So you can have situations where somebody who's never had any kind of symptoms of depression is on a medication that is called an anti-depressant, but again, that is a problem of terminology, and actually it is perfectly appropriate that that person be given that medication because these medications are helpful for anxiety symptoms. Another situation that can get confusing is individuals with bipolar disorder. On the one hand, individuals with bipolar disorder do have depressive episodes; however, most anti-depressant medications have the risk of triggering manic episodes. But the situation is even more confusing because there are certain anti-depressant medications that are safe to use in people who have bipolar disorder. Given the level of complication, what all of this boils down to, is it's very important to have depression medication by a psychiatrist because psychiatrists are the ones that specialize both in making appropriate diagnoses and being up to date in knowing the latest information about these medications.

Making A Killing: The Untold Story Of Psychotropic Drugging (Documentary)

01:34:43
This is a Documentary and will provide the facts about psychotropic drugs and the huge profits they create for the pharmaceutical industry. These drugs are not safe and have not been on the market long enough to provide sufficient long term studies regarding their effects. These drugs do cause addiction, however most "doctors" would call this dependence because you do not have to take an increasing dose over time. They are completely fine with you being addicted to the same amount of any given drug on a daily basis. Over half of the people that commit suicide in the United States are prescribed to psychotropic drugs. (Ex: Paxil (Paroxetine), Zoloft (Sertraline), Prozac, Wellbutrin (Bupropion), Effexor, Seroquil, Ultram (Tramadol), etc.) Save Money, Get Healthy And Create Wealth With Youngevity! Oliver overcoming Depression and Anxiety without Medication

02:25
Oliver discusses his recovery overcoming Anxiety and Anti depressants medications and using the Release technique instead for a more effective solution after 11 years. Not The Root Cause! Just like an aspirin works on the symptoms of a headache... and not the underlying cause. Which brings us back to the laughingly simple "miracle" technique I stumbled upon back in 1976 to flush out ALL anxiety, worry, stress, fear, depression and illness from my body. What's truly amazing is, this laughingly simple (yet scientifically verified) technique doesn't just reduce anxiety (and all associated negative feeling) it... Eliminates Anxiety 100% For Good! Which brings up another point: Why should you believe me? After all, I'm not a doctor, psychiatrist, or any other kind of "mind scientist." But that doesn't matter. You see, I've figured out a way... You Can Prove My Claims For Yourself, Almost For Free! But first, let's talk a little more about my scientifically verified" miracle" technique for totally eliminating... for good... anxiety and panic from your life. For starters: The "miracle" technique I would like to share with you is the healthy way (no dangerous drugs). It's very simple. Laughingly simple. You can do it wherever you are, whatever you are doing (nobody will realize you are doing it -- even if you are in the middle of a conversation). And, it is something you are going to love to do. Once you learn it, it won't cost you a penny (unlike prescription drugs and therapy -- meaning it will actually save you money!)... and... I promise... as soon as you read about this... You Are Going To Have A Big Smile On Your Face! Why? Simple: Because my "miracle" technique makes so much common sense, you are going to chuckle to yourself thinking about how all those Noble Prize winning scientists and big shot psychiatrists couldn't figure this out. To tell the truth, I bet you are going to wonder why you never figured it out! But please don't let its simplicity fool you into thinking it's not very effective. Nothing could be further from the truth. And the truth is: The "miracle" technique I would like to share with you has been responsible for totally curing the most severe forms of anxiety and emotional disorder that exist. Including...

Treating depression

03:06
Dr. Donald Garcia works at FutureSearch, where they are launching a clinical trial of a new drug to treat depression. They are specifically looking for people who may be on medications right now and aren't responding to those drugs. This new drug works on three different receptors in the brain, which is one more than most drugs currently. The other advantage of this drug is that it does not impact weight or libido, a problem with a number of current drugs. This is a 12-week medically supervised trial. Participants will get paid, and there is aftercare if necessary.

Can Antipsychotics Treat Depression? | Mood Disorders

02:08
Watch more Mood and Personality Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498588-Can-Antipsychotics-Treat-Depression-Mood-Disorders This is a good example of how confusing terminology causes a lot of problems in understanding different aspects of psychiatric treatment. Why would you use an antipsychotic on somebody who's not psychotic? The answer to that question is that the effects of medications that are used to treat psychotic symptoms are not limited to just stopping psychotic symptoms. In other words, when you take a medication that's classified as an antipsychotic it can have other effects that are positive and some of those effects are antidepressant effects. So, in an individual who is not responding to a primary antidepressant, sometimes it can make sense to add a so called antipsychotic as a second or third medication to try to get benefit for that person for their depression symptoms; and it reflects a general trend in psychiatry where medications that are referred to as a certain class, when moved to a different context, that classification causes confusion. What's more useful in general in understanding why a certain medication is used for a certain disorder is understanding what the effects are of that particular medication, what the potential benefits are, and what the side effects are; and then evaluating whether the side effects or the risks justify the benefits or the effects. If each medication is approached this way, it's easier to avoid the confusion that comes from thinking about medications in general classes. So the reason that antipsychotics are used to treat depression is they're not just antipsychotic. This holds true for many classes of psychiatric medications. So, when working with your doctor, focus on a particular medication, find out what it can do, find out what the side effects are, and then you can make an informed decision about whether it makes sense to take that medication.

Audiobook version also available as a free download. Psychiatric medications can sometimes be very useful, but there is often little information or guidance when the risks and harm start to outweigh the benefits. Will Hall provides an introductory overview of how to come off psychiatric medication. Will Hall is a survivor of a schizophrenia diagnosis who today works as a therapist and teaches internationally on mental diversity, including psychiatric medication. This video provides some basic guidance for anyone considering reducing or coming off psychiatric medications and their supporters, and is discussed in greater detail in the Harm Reduction Guideto Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs. Coping With Depression - How To Deal With Depression Without Medication http://depressionhero.com/TopTenMistakes Do you need help coping with depression, and want to find depression solutions without medication? If you are, then join me on the journey to dealing with depression by applying the simple depression self help tips that I used to beat depression. I shot this video at the Hall of Champions in San Diego. Being there reminded me of the movie "Glory Road", which is about the discrimination experienced in the 1960's by the first all African-American basketball team. This movie teaches us what it's like to put up with ridicule, racism and discrimination. These players and their coach learned to overcome the negative comments and opinions from the outside world. This is one of the major hurdles with depression. When we are depressed, we are very focused on what others think of us. We often feel ridiculed and criticized. Like the Road to Glory basketball champions, you too can gather your inner strength, faith and desire to overcome depression. You can be the hero of your life! I did it and you can too! Please LIKE and SHARE this video if you enjoyed or got some benefit from it :)  Go to http://www.DepressionHero.com  to get more self help for depression videos and learn more about what I did to beat depression.  Let's stay in touch:  Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/depressionhero Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/depressionhero

Adderall vs Ritalin - What medication to choose for ADHD?

03:06
Psychiatrist Dr. Edward Fruitman, M.D., Medical Director of Trifecta Health Medical Center (http://trifectahealthnyc.com) , explains the differences between ADD/ ADHD Medications: Adderall and Ritalin. Often Dr. Fruitman is asked" How do you know what medication to choose?" Here is some insight to the thought process behind choosing the right medication for you! Both Ritalin and Adderall belong in the same stimulant category. Once key factor in choosing is the patient's preference and attitude toward each drug. If a patient doesn't take their medicine, it won't work! It is also important to know the patient's previous history with each of the drugs. Typically, Dr. Fruitman says, it is best to start on a low dose in an extended release form, and Adderall may be best for motivation purposes, while Ritalin may be a better choice for over-stimulation. Both of these drugs have proven effective in treating ADD/ADHD. The most important thing to consider while deciding a course of treatment is finding the right dosage. Can You Take Prescriptions? | Boot Camp

01:42
Watch more Boot Camp: Learn about Basic Training videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498618-Can-You-Take-Prescriptions-Boot-Camp "Welcome to the first and only episode of ""What About My Prescription?"". I'm your host Sgt. Volkin, and in this episode I'll be fielding questions from a fake audience today. Alright, thank you very much. So, what will happen if you bring your prescription medicines to Basic Training? Very easy answer. It's going to be taken away from you. If you require medication you most likely won't get passed MEPS, or the Medical Entrance Processing Station. Once you're at Basic Training and you need to obtain medicine, you can go to Sick Hall and get it there. Sick Hall's not that much fun though. If the medication is strong enough that you can overdose, you're going to have to take the medication with your Drill Sargeant, and that usually comes with contingencies like doing push-ups so that's not fun. So, let's go ahead and go to the questions from our fake audience. Question number one: ""Can I bring my birth control with me to Basic Training""? The answer is 'No' Question number two: ""Can I bring my asthma inhaler?"" The answer is 'No' In fact, you can't even get into the military with asthma, so the answer is still 'No'. Question number three: ""Can I bring my heartburn pills?"" The answer is 'No'. Another question from our fake audience is ""Can I bring my heart-worm medication?"" Not unless you're a canine and if you're a canine, you can't get into the military, so the answer is 'No'. Another question: ""Can I bring my Viagra?"" 'No', not sure why you're going to want to bring that to Basic Training anyway. Thank you for joining me on the series premier and the final episode of ""What About My Prescription?"""

Depression and Diabetes

01:50
http://easywaytoloseweightinaweek.com. Depression And Diabetes Many people who are diagnosed with diabetes are overwhelmed with an onslaught of new information, medications, doctor visits and a feeling of helplessness. Diabetes can be frightening, particularly for anyone who is not familiar with the disease. We read about complications and insulin and medication and feel hopeless. Many diabetics experience a period of denial when first diagnosed with diabetes. They refuse to believe there is anything wrong with them. While they remain in denial, the condition worsens. This can often lead to depression. Depression and diabetes often go hand in hand. According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes have a greater risk for developing depression than other individuals. The stress of management of diabetes can take a toll on an individual. There are new medications to take, blood sugar must be monitored frequently and a record kept for your doctor. There are frequent doctor visits and there may be several different medication combinations needed before your blood sugar is kept under control. On top of that, people who have diabetes are often faced with sudden lifestyle changes. Foods that they once enjoyed are now taboo. An exercise regime is often recommended, which can be good for depression, but people with depression often have little energy to begin an exercise regime. As the depression continues, people often lose interest in monitoring their blood sugar levels and may even skip their medication. Symptoms of depression include a loss of pleasure in every day activities you used to enjoy as well as a change in appetite. You may have trouble concentrating and have trouble sleeping. Or you may even sleep too much. Many people suffer from depression, but for a diabetic, it can be life threatening. Depression and diabetes is a dangerous combination. People who are diagnosed with diabetes can empower themselves by learning as much about the disease as possible from the beginning. This can alleviate the feeling of helplessness that often accompanies the diagnoses. Ask your physician questions. Do research. Find out how you can help manage you disease. If you feel you are suffering from some of the signs of depression, ask your doctor to recommend a therapist who is familiar in dealing with people with chronic illness. Therapy can be crucial for a diabetic patient who feels isolated because of all of the extra work involved in treating their illness. Do not be afraid to discuss your illness with family and friends. Diabetes is a nothing to be ashamed of, it is a disease that affects millions of people. If at all possible, join a support group for others who also have diabetes. Here you can not only find kindred spirits who are experiencing some of the same fears as yourself, but you can also learn new information. Any time someone is diagnosed with an illness puts them at risk for depression. Their world has changed and no longer feels safe. Worse of all, they feel out of control. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, take back the control and learn how to manage your disease. By empowering yourself, you will not only be able to effectively manage your diabetes, you will eliminate the depression. http://easywaytoloseweightinaweek.com
