Medication with Mental Illnesses

https://www.facebook.com/UnderstandingMentalDisorders https://twitter.com/Juni2424 http://juni2424.blogspot.ca/ Drugs that treat mental illness- Reference from http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/medications-treat-disorders There are several different types of drugs available to treat mental illnesses. Some of the most commonly used are antidepressants, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, mood stabilizing, and stimulant medications. What Drugs Are Used To Treat Depression? When treating depression, several drug options are available. Some of the most commonly used include: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox, and Viibryd. Selective serotonin & norepinephrine inhibitors (SNRIs), such as Effexor, Cymbalta, and Pristiq. Older tricyclic antidepressants, such as Elavil, Pamelor, Sinequan, and Imipramine. Dopaminergic drugs such as Wellbutrin. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as Nardil, Parnate, and Emsam. Tetracyclic antidepressants that are noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants (NaSSAs), such as Remeron. Your health care provider can determine which medication is right for you. Remember that medications usually take 4 to 6 weeks to become fully effective. And if one drug does not work, there are many others to try. In some cases, a combination of antidepressants may be necessary. Sometimes an antidepressant combined with a different type of drug, such as a mood stabilizer (like Lithium), a second antidepressant, or atypical anti-psychotic drug, is the most effective treatment. Side effects vary, depending on what type of drug you are taking, and may improve once your body adjusts to the medication. If you decide to stop taking your antidepressants, it is important that you gradually reduce the dose over a period of several weeks. Quitting antidepressants abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms. It is important to discuss quitting (or changing) medications with your health care provider first. What Drugs Treat Anxiety Disorders? Antidepressants, particularly the SSRIs, may also be effective in treating many types of anxiety disorders. Other anti-anxiety medications include the benzodiazepines, such as Valium, Ativan, and Xanax. These drugs carry a risk of addiction, so they are not as desirable for long-term use. Other possible side effects include drowsiness, poor concentration, and irritability. What Drugs Treat Psychotic Disorders? Anti-psychotics are a class of drugs used commonly to treat psychotic disorders and sometimes to treat mood disorders such as bipolar disorder or major depression. Different anti-psychotics vary in their side effects, and some people have more trouble with certain side effects than with others. The doctor can change medications or dosages to help minimize unpleasant side effects. A drawback to some anti-psychotic medications is that the person's ability to tolerate the medication may change, limiting long-term use. Most side effects of anti-psychotic drugs are mild and many go away after the first few weeks of treatment. Side effects may include: http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/medications-treat-disorders http://zenpizza.blogspot.ca/2009/05/celexa-withdrawal-symptoms-and-getting.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSRI_discontinuation_syndrome Drowsiness Rapid or irregular heartbeat Dizziness when changing positions Decrease in sexual interest or ability Problems with menstrual periods Skin rashes or skin sensitivity to the sun Weight gain Muscle spasms Restlessness and pacing Slowing down of movement and speech Shuffling walk Menstrual irregularities in women

What are the side effects of taking medicine for depression?

03:01
Depression medications face a lot of stigmas in society and now medications used are well tolerated and the side effects are very minor. Medically supervised medications can take several weeks to resolve symptoms of depression and need to be maintained for often 6-9 months. Doctors can then reassess the patient for the use of the medication based on symptoms.

Mirtazapine - Sleep Aid/Antidepressant Review

10:17
Today I will be reviewing Mirtazapine, also known as Remeron and Avanza. Mirtazapine is a Noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressent. It is commonly used off label to treat sleep disorders such as insomnia because of its sedating action primarily due to Serotonergic antagonism and antihistamine effects. I currently take Mirtazapine 30mg a night, on top of my 15mg Dexedrine (d-Amphetamine) a day. Mirtazapine I find is very efficient at reducing sleep latency, but sadly, it was not as effective I thought at increasing sleep quality, or at least the ease at which I can wake. I found in terms of side effects, it obviously was strongly sedating, but also caused appetite increase and some minor dizziness when I first began my treatment. I do not notice any significant side effects now (2 months of use)

Visit Link Bellow: http://www.PanicAttacksCure.org Anxiety is a physiological response to a stressful or potentially dangerous situation. http://www.PanicAttacksCure.org In its normal state, anxiety is an important human coping mechanism. When anxiety becomes excessive, irrational, or inappropriate, interfering with the normal functioning of a person's life, it is considered an anxiety disorder. What are the different types of Anxiety Disorders? Generalized Anxiety Disorder is marked by "free floating anxiety," with persistent and pervasive feelings of fright. The person experiencing this anxiety constantly feels threatened. Symptoms may include muscle tension, twitchiness, an inability to relax, autonomic hyperactivity (increased heart rate and sweating), an upset stomach, and headaches. Basically, the person suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder experiences a chronic state of hypervigilance and tension without any clear source or focus.Panic Disorder is comprised of very intense panic attacks of short duration (minutes to a few hours). The person feels as if they are going to faint and even die. Symptoms may include chest pains, heart palpitations, hot and cold flashes, feelings of unreality, dizziness, or faintness (though it is extremely rare for anyone experiencing a panic attack to actually faint). Another important feature in a Panic Disorder is that the person cannot identify any specific reason for the panic. It feels as though it comes out of nowhere, making it even more terrifying. Phobias are persistent and recurrent fears of a particular situation, object or activity. There are several types of Phobias: Agoraphobia: The most severe of the phobias, it includes a fear of open spaces, public places, and crowds. It is also common for agoraphobics to fear being alone, so they usually stay at home with a friend or relative present. Agoraphobia often begins with a panic attack while the person is away from the house, and the person then stays at home to avoid experiencing that situation again. Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia) is when a person has an excessive and unreasonable fear of interacting with other people in social situations. A person with social phobia constantly fears they will embarrass themselves or make mistakes in front of other people, developing a negative self-consciousness. When placed in a social situation, they become anxious or may have a panic attack. As the illness progresses, persons with social anxiety disorder may have distorted thinking, and may begin to avoid contact with other people, becoming isolated. This may interfere with work, school and personal relationships. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is experienced as obsessive thoughts followed by compulsive behaviors. Those with OCD typically are quite rigid in their thinking and behavior, and seek consistency and avoid spontaneity (which is perceived to be dangerous). Uncontrollable thoughts are usually considered by the person to be socially unacceptable, such as bizarre sexual thoughts, or thoughts of hurting someone. The person then engages in compulsive behaviors (such as counting, touching something repetitiously, and other ritualistic behaviors) in an attempt to control the obsessive thoughts. With severe OCD, the engagement of multiple compulsive behaviors can be extremely debilitating and may result in major disruptions in the person's life. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is often considered an anxiety disorder and is frequently associated with other anxiety disorders. PTSD develops in response to actual or threatened extreme danger or trauma, such as wartime experiences, torture, natural disasters, rape, incest, or even psychotic. Symptoms include nightmares, dissociative states, vivid flashback memories of the traumatic event, loss of control, emotional detachment (psychic numbing), hyper-arousal, and survivor guilt. Typically, symptoms of PTSD consist of recurrent re-experiencing of the trauma, avoidance behaviors or phobias, and chronic physical signs related to hyper-arousal, including anxiety, sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating, hypervigilance, memory problems, and fatigue. Anxiety Disorders consist of phobias, social anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, and post-traumatic stress syndrome. Often, when a person with an anxiety disorder seeks help, they are not treated in the most effective manner. Many practitioners will put a person with an anxiety disorder on benzodiazepines, such as Valium or Xanax or Ambien. Holistic therapies round out our treatment system, with yoga, art therapy, mindfulness meditation, massage, and acupuncture all available. Anxiety disorders are often treated with medications. Antidepressants, Beta-blockers, low dose antipsychotic medications, benzodiazepines, and other anti-anxiety medications are commonly prescribed

FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bignoknowofficial BigBroLilBro CHANNEL:https://www.youtube.com/user/BigBroLilBroKnowBest TWITTER: https://twitter.com/Bignoknow My Story My name is Noah and on May 18 2011, I had a rare reaction to a vaccine called VIVITROL and consequently spiraled into a major, agitated, suicidal depression with depersonalization. I lost 25 lbs in 4 weeks and was in full panic or near panic for 8 weeks straight mixed with the darkest most painful depression I cold have ever imagined. I immediately could not work and had to move in with my parents who along with many siblings and friends had to watch me 24/7 as I was so suicidal. I was eventually hospitalized. Getting through each day seemed truly unbearable and I knew I would surely die. I have been put on many many different SSRI's SNRI's Tricyclics, Mood stabilizers, anti psychotics, holistic meds, acupuncture and even a form of shock therapy called RTMS. I barely saw any improvement in my condition for a full year. It was decided I had treatment resistant depression and I spent nearly every moment in tears. Weeks after starting my newest round of medications (Seroquel & Nortryptaline) as a last ditch effort, I had my blood drawn for possible hormone imbalances and my Testosterone levels came back 200 ng/Dl and 150 ng/Dl. The average 25 year old male has 750 ng/Dl. With this discovery I for the first time had any type of possible explanation as to why I was not getting better and why I might be so so sick. The symptoms of such Low T are very similar to those of major depression. I started Testosterone replacement therapy soon after and have been checking in with the world and documenting my experience with treatment as well as giving my insight and perspective on various topics of mental health. I am blessed to say that I have slowly, over the last year and 6 months, been improving and becoming more stable which I never thought to be possible. My low T manifested itself in the form of Major depression, anxiety, and depersonalization/ derealization for over a year. Gaining some mental stability back is nothing short of a miracle as I was near death for what felt like forever. I do not consider myself to be totally healed yet but I am closer now then ever before and aim to use what I have been through to help or at least offer support to others in need I was able to successfully come off my Seroquel and Pamelor. I work out all the time as a part of my mental health recovery!!! Weight training and all kinds of cardio rule much of my free time!

What is Anxiety Disorder? Medication Vs Alternative Treatment For Anxiety Disorders

Best Anxiety Medication - Ways To Make Your Anxiety Go Away With And Without Using Medication at http://www.PanicAwayProgram.org Although anxiety is accepted as being a normal and healthy emotion, some people suffer from intense anxiety, which ends up affecting their lives and causing them to keep away from certain situations that they used to be able to deal without difficulty. If you are suffering from anxiety then you should begin on finding an appropriate and effective method of treatment. http://www.PanicAwayProgram.org The first thing you need to do is determining the type of anxiety disorder you suffer from. There are five main types of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Effective treatments for each anxiety disorder are accessible, and new and enhanced treatments are always becoming available. Non-medication treatments Once you have found out the type of anxiety that you are suffering from you will be able to find the suitable anxiety disorder treatment. Mild anxiety disorders can often be treated relatively simple with relaxation and breathing techniques. Yoga, for instance, is a great type of exercise that can really help with anxiety and related health conditions. This is definitely something that should be tried prior to more serious forms of anxiety disorder treatment. If your anxiety is more severe or constant, then therapy or counseling may become the best option. Cognitive behavioral therapy for one has been confirmed to be very effective in the treatment of all types of anxiety disorder. In this therapy you work one on one with an experienced and qualified mental health professional, who will assist you to deal with your fears in a safe and controlled environment. Over time you will be able to find out the root of your anxiety and from there work towards developing a treatment plan that will lead you to your normal life. You can also select an anxiety disorder treatment plan that involves natural and herbal treatments. Herbal remedies such as valerian root and kava kava have over and over again proven to be effective at treating anxiety disorders and depression. You do need to keep in mind that just because these herbal remedies are natural it does not indicate that you do not still have to be careful. If taken inappropriately, these remedies can actually worsen your anxiety. Hypnotherapy, biofeedback, and acupuncture are other options for anxiety disorder treatment. In order to determine which one is going to work best for you, you need to talk to your doctor. You may need to try a few different methods before you find the one that works best for you and your particular anxiety condition. Medications for anxiety disorder Generally, most treatments for anxiety disorders include at least one prescription medication. If you start taking medication as a treatment for anxiety disorder, it is important to understand that this should not be a long-term solution and you should keep working with a certified mental health professional in order to determine the root cause of your anxiety. There are several common medications for anxiety disorder and one of them is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Serotonin is known as the brain's all-natural happy drug. Scientists believe that a lack of serotonin is the source of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks and therefore the purpose of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors is to increase the levels of serotonin in the brain. Some familiar brands that use selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are Prozac and Zoloft. Benzodiazepines are another choice of medication, which act like minor tranquilizers. They decelerate the body's nervous system, giving it an all-over calm. These types of medications can be addictive, so they should only be taken as prescribed. Some well-known brand names are Xanax and Valium. Another medication that is used to treat anxiety disorder is antidepressants, which affect the neurotransmitters in the brain. Effexor is a good example of this type of anxiety disorder medication. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are very strong antidepressant drugs that should only be taken as a last resort after all other treatments have been tried. These drugs can be lethal when combined with certain other drugs and foods. One thing that need to be noted, anyone who takes antidepressants may become more susceptible to suicide, especially when they first begin to take them or when the dosage is changed.

Seroquel Serious Side Effects

08:58
I was prescribed Seroquel for Anxiety as well as a possible mood disorder. I had HORRIBLE side effects from Seroquel. I gained over 10 pounds in a week, felt like I had the flu constantly, had horrible headaches, felt like my blood sugar was out of whack, super sleepy but couldn't sleep still, joint pain and swelling, and numbness with tingling in my feet. Then, I woke up to find my face swollen along with 3+ pitting edema in both legs. The Doctor had me stop the Seroquel instantly without weaning down and didn't have me on anything for 3.5 weeks. I felt crazier than I have ever felt in my entire life. I keep on fighting and I know that any of you going through any sort of mental illness can do so too!

Dr. Lissa Rankin: "Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself" | Talks at Google

54:30
While some mind-body medicine pioneers and New Age teachers talk about how we can heal ourselves, Dr. Lissa Rankin was a skeptical physician, trained in evidence-based academic medicine and raised by a closed-minded physician father. But after witnessing patients who declined conventional medical treatment, only to experience spontaneous remissions from seemingly ""incurable"" illnesses, she couldn't deny the possibility that patients might hold within them the power to heal themselves. Her curiosity led her to dig deep into the medical literature to scientifically prove that the mind can heal the body. Her search uncovered not only proof that you can heal yourself, but also the shocking physiological mechanisms of how emotions like fear, loneliness, pessimism, and depression can make the body sick, while love, intimate connection, optimism, and faith can cure you. About Dr. Rankin Lissa Rankin, M.D. is a physician whose research led her to discover that our bodies have natural self-repair mechanisms that can be activated or disabled based on thoughts, beliefs, and feelings that originate in the mind. She is on a mission to heal our broken health care system, help patients play a more active role in healing themselves, heal, train and certify physicians in a more enlightened way of practicing medicine, and encourage the health care industry to embrace and facilitate, rather than resist, the body's self-healing capacities. Lissa has written 3 books, including her newest book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself. She speaks around the world, blogs at LissaRankin.com, paints professionally, and founded the Whole Health Medicine Institute, a training program for health care providers. She leads a mentoring program for visionaries, founded the wellness communities HealHealthCareNow.com and OwningPink.com, and teaches online programs, such as ""Find Your Calling"" with Dr. Martha Beck and Amy Ahlers, and ""Visionary Ignition Switch,"" an online business school for visionaries co-created with Amy Ahlers. Her work has been featured extensively in the national media, including O magazine, The New York Times, CNN, Health, Women's Health, Self, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. You can follow her on Twitter at @lissarankin or at Facebook.com/LissaRankin. Lissa lives in Marin County, California with her husband and daughter.

In some towns in Malaysia, Garcinia Cambogia is used to make a soup that is eaten before meals for fat burning because of Garcinia's appetite-suppressing potentials. How is Garcinia Cambogia Used -- Garcinia for Weight Loss ►http://nutritionnweightloss.com/puregarcinia◄ This Fruit supplies one of the least expensive, natural and organic extracts on the market for weight loss; the extract is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA), this ingredient is extracted from the rind of the fruit and is said to accelerate your weight-loss efforts. Specialists conclude that along with proper diet and exercise HCA can double or triple the amount of fat you burn. The typical individual taking Garcinia Cambogia extract lost an average of 4 pounds a month. How does Garcinia Cambogia Work -- HCA Supplement ►http://nutritionnweightloss.com/puregarcinia◄ The HCA removed from Garcinia cambogia aids in fat burning by doing two things: It helps to obstruct fat, and it reduces your appetite. The HCA extracted from Garcinia cambogia, restrains appetite by enhancing serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in your mind that regulates your mood appetite, and sleep. It is a target of many antidepressant medicines. Having reduced levels of serotonin might make you feel depressed or nervous; it drives many individuals into psychological or reactive eating. By increasing serotonin levels, HCA enhances state of mind and restrains the drive to react to difficult scenarios with food. As you eat less, your body senses this and it releases stored fat in your fat cells. Garcinia Cambogia Benefits - HCA ►http://nutritionnweightloss.com/puregarcinia◄ The compound extracted from the rind of the Garcinia Cambogia fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA), and specialists claim that HCA can double or triple one's fat burning. HCA blocks fat by inhibiting an essential enzyme that your body has to make fat from carbohydrates: Citrate lyase. Usually carbohydrates or sugars that are not made use of right away or stored in other forms are converted into fats. When HCA hinders citrate lyase, the fat-making procedure is stopped and the manufacturing of LDL (bad cholesterol levels) and triglycerides decline. How to Lose Weight Fast -- How to Lose Weight Quickly ►http://nutritionnweightloss.com/puregarcinia◄ With no other changes, you could lose 2-4 pounds within one month. Panic Attacks And Panic Disorder Natural Treatment Without Drugs

http://www.PanicNoMore.net | Panic Attacks And Panic Disorder Natural Treatment Without Drugs | http://www.PanicNoMore.net Panic-Anxiety attacks are the type of attacks that bring about an unexpected, vast, and out of control fright of losing your mind. A panic disorder is psychological or neurological in origin and this isn't because of any chemical imbalance. A panic disorder is differentiated by intense anxiety or panic attacks. These attacks are quite extreme and they distress one's ability to manage with the every day proceedings. Nearly all panic disorder instances are typically treated with anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications but the cure of panic attacks can be done purely through diet, exercise and behavior modification treatment - plus without any drugs. Panic attacks can be healed without the use of medications. To heal panic attacks, to begin with you need to detect whether you're suffering from one or not. A proven and successful way of alleviating panic attacks is by using behavior alteration treatments. Behavior treatment facilitates the patient to cope with panic attacks by shifting his/her behavior towards their thoughts, example: How they respond to specific situations. Relaxation and breathing drills are the most common used techniques. In curing panic disorders, Cognitive behavior therapy known as CBT is effective as it locates the trigger of the panic attacks and then tries to swap those behaviors and reactions with replacements that are more pleasing. The other treatment to heal panic attacks is Interoceptive contact therapy where the signs of a panic attack are intentionally ignited so that the shrink can demonstrate to the patient that there will be no damage done to them. Sometimes this kind of treatment can be capable of being rather danderous, nevertheless it has as well proven to be an efficient method of curing panic-anxiety disorders - without the use of any medication. Calm down methods consist of stretching exercises, yoga, tai chi, and deep-breathing drills must be integrated to cure panic attacks as these tricks shall assist to eliminate stress from your life which may be the main cause of the panic and anxiety attacks. Stay away from sugars and caffeine because these substances contain stimulants. Stimulants can make you feel more uneasy and short-tempered and can even start a panic or anxiety attack. Another way to naturally cure panic attacks is by the use of herbal supplements and b-complex vitamins. B-complex vitamins can have a soothing or balancing effect on the patient suffering from panic disorders. At the same time herbal supplements and teas which contain valerian root, evening primrose oil, chamomile and flaxseed oil can additionally be useful. In case one undergoes trouble in breathing or could have the shakes or may throw up or experience suffocating then a person can end the panic attacks by managing his or her breathing or by shifting the breathing patterns. To "cure panic attacks", one can take long and deep breaths, breathe in through the nose and breathe out through the mouth. Patients are required to keep all of the muscles in their body increasingly tensed and calm. Patients have to learn how to manage their anger and stay away from being stressed out about particular circumstances. Restraint can aid an individual in handling panic attacks as panic attacks are mental in nature and aren't produced because of any chemical imbalance. For this reason, the patient can avoid or reverse the regularity of any anxiety attack. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the methods that I talked about in the article above. And take note that panic attacks can be controlled all natural - without the use of any medications or drugs!

Anxiety and Depression Webinar: Holistic Options

31:02
http://drhedberg.com/anxiety-and-depr... In this Webinar, Dr. Hedberg discusses holistic options for depression and anxiety, which is a huge topic in the United States today. Millions and millions of Americans are on antidepressants and medications for anxiety. This webinar talks about some alternative options, some supplementation, some herbal medicine, and some other things to think about if you suffer from depression and anxiety. First, he discusses some of the main causes of depression and anxiety, the first one being chronic inflammation. And this really goes back to the inflammation disrupting the neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin and dopamine, norepinephrine. And the inflammation can be from anything. It can be from food sensitivities, chronic infections, toxic metals, stress. Many, many things can create inflammation. Genetics, of course. Different amino acid deficiencies like tryptophan, which is the precursor to serotonin, and L-tyrosine, which is the precursor to dopamine. And a lot of the medications out there are targeting those neurotransmitters, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine because they do work. There are other ways, though, to manipulate those neurotransmitters as well. And then, of course, whenever you’re talking about depression and anxiety, we have to talk about the thyroid, and hypothyroidism can lead to anxiety or depression, and the same thing with hyperthyroidism. Not exercising enough is definitely a contributor, especially to depression. Environmental toxins. Adrenal imbalances, so imbalances of cortisol, DHEA, and adrenaline. Gut inflammation. In the book, “The Second Brain” the doctor talks about the intricate connections between the brain and the gut, and if there is inflammation in the gut or dysfunction in the gut, then many times there’s also dysfunction in the brain. Mild seizure Update on my sweet boy: 9.16.11-2.5.13 Loved and never forgotten. Thank you to all the wonderful people out there who viewed our videos and gave us their support. I hope this synopsis will be helpful to those out there dealing with similar issues. These videos were posted to help my boy and his doctors, locally and across the country, diagnose his disease. Our hope was the videos in connection with all the testing data we accumulated would help him and other dogs. I first recognized his symptoms in May of 2012. He did not have SM or hydrocephalus. His MRIs were surprisingly unremarkable given his condition and his breed. His sire is German/English with incredibe lines and extensive health testing; likewise, his American dam, again from great lines and quite healthy. His breeder too pains to breed out of the line and was wonderful, fully transparent and could not have been more supportive. As you see from the early videos he began around 8 months with something we called episodes. They were, most likely, focal seizures. Within weeks he experienced grand mal seizures that quickly progressed into cluster seizures. All drugs known to suppress seizure activity were tried and many in combination. Sometimes they would work for a week to 10 days but the seizures always returned. We also tried experimental drugs and holistic options. We were trying to wait for an experimental procedure but, he got too sick. In the end, he lost all voluntary muscle control and he didn’t seem to have any cognitive function—I couldn’t watch him suffer any more. After he passed, an autopsy was performed to try to get to the root of his symptoms. Nothing abnormal was present but the repeated and prolonged seizures were found to have completely destroyed his frontal lobe accounting for his debilitated condition in the last days of his life. We miss him terribly but he is at peace. If you have a dog with seizures, see a neurologist and take videos. The combination is your best hope.

Abortion Debate: Attorneys Present Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Pro-Life / Pro-Choice Arguments (1971)

01:04:43
Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion. More on the topic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=a51e4ea00a141f69f71ac0710419680f&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=roe%20wade Decided simultaneously with a companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court ruled 7--2 that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion, but that right must be balanced against the state's two legitimate interests in regulating abortions: protecting prenatal life and protecting women's health. Arguing that these state interests became stronger over the course of a pregnancy, the Court resolved this balancing test by tying state regulation of abortion to the trimester of pregnancy. The Court later rejected Roe's trimester framework, while affirming Roe's central holding that a person has a right to abortion until viability. The Roe decision defined "viable" as being "potentially able to live outside the mother's womb, albeit with artificial aid", adding that viability "is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks) but may occur earlier, even at 24 weeks." In disallowing many state and federal restrictions on abortion in the United States, Roe v. Wade prompted a national debate that continues today, about issues including whether and to what extent abortion should be legal, who should decide the legality of abortion, what methods the Supreme Court should use in constitutional adjudication, and what the role should be of religious and moral views in the political sphere. Roe v. Wade reshaped national politics, dividing much of the United States into pro-choice and pro-life camps, while activating grassroots movements on both sides. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roe_v._Wade Sarah Ragle Weddington (born February 5, 1945, in Abilene, Texas) is an American attorney, law professor, and former Texas state legislator best known for representing "Jane Roe" (real name Norma McCorvey) in the landmark Roe v. Wade case before the United States Supreme Court. After graduating, Weddington found it difficult to find a job with a law firm. She instead joined a group of graduate students at University of Texas-Austin that was researching ways to challenge various anti-abortion statutes. After deciding that a woman should helm a lawsuit to challenge Texas' statute, Weddington volunteered. Soon after, a pregnant woman named Norma McCorvey visited a local attorney seeking an abortion. The attorney instead assisted McCorvey with handing over her child for adoption, and after doing so, referred McCorvey to Weddington and Linda Coffee. In March 1970, Weddington and her co-counsel filed suit against Wade, the Dallas district attorney and the person responsible for enforcing the anti-abortion statute. McCorvey became the landmark plaintiff, and was referred in the legal documents as "Jane Roe" to protect her identity. Weddington first stated her case in front of a three-judge district court on May 1970 in Dallas. The district court agreed that the Texas abortion laws were unlawful, but the state appealed the decision, landing it before the United States Supreme Court. Weddington appeared before the Supreme Court in 1971 and again in the fall of 1972. Her argument was based on the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 14th amendments, as well as the Court's previous decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, which legalized the sale of contraceptives based on the right of privacy. Of the experience, Weddington later stated, "There was a sense of majesty, walking up those stairs, my steps echoing on the marble. I went to the lawyers' lounge — to go over my argument. I wanted to make a last stop before I went in — but there was no ladies' room in the lawyer's lounge." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Weddington
