Depression and its treatment

06:46
Around one in every 10 people will suffer from depression. Brain regions that control mood are often disrupted in depression. Antidepressant drugs or behavioral therapy can offer some relief. By understanding the brain better, our ability to treat depression should also get a boost. Watch the video to learn about the neural circuits affected in depression, and the molecular and cellular changes that might hold the key to treating it. Medications for Depression & Bipolar | Robert D. McMullen, MD

08:44
Robert D. McMullen, MD about Medications for Depression & Bipolar http://tmsbraincare.com/medications-bipolar-depression-hd-video/ Medications for treatment of Depression & Bipolar disorders Major depressive disorder is also known as major depression, clinical depression, or unipolar depression. The term unipolar refers to the presence of one pole, or one extreme of mood- depressed mood. This may be compared with bipolar depression which has the two poles of depressed mood and mania (i.e., euphoria, heightened emotion and activity). Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior—from the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other These are of 2 types • Bipolar I disorder involves periods of severe mood episodes from mania to depression. The highs may even require hospitalization of the person. • Bipolar II disorder is a milder form of mood elevation, involving milder episodes of hypomania that alternate with periods of severe depression The depression that people with bipolar disorder experience is generally of a melancholic or psychotic type and therefore more biological in its nature. The depression found in these bipolar patients can be difficult to treat than unipolar depression as the antidepressants can cause them to have greater mood swings. These patients need to be on mood-stabilizing drugs. The antidepressants alone can actually increase the manic episodes and worsen the disorder. Antidepressants: divided into three main classes: • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) - were developed in the 1980's and are the most common prescribed today. They are sold under brand names such as Prozac, Paxil, Prozac, Luvox, Zoloft, Celexa • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) There are three types of MAOIs, phenelzine,(Nardil) isocarboxazid and tranylcypromine, ( Parnate) and moclobemide.) • Tricyclic drugs (TCAs). (sold as Amitriptyline, Imipramine) For effective control and to limit the side effects a combination can be used such as Wellbutrin (or bupropion). Mechanisms of action are different hence lower doses of both help control side effects. The combination of Zoloft and wellbutruim earned the popular name Welloft. The MAO inhibitors are more effective than the SSRI drugs. But can cause severe weight gain and therefore patients need to work on diet control, else the spike in blood pressure can be dangerous. They are contraindicated with drugs that work on serotonin. Lamictal (or Lamotrigine) was FDA approved for treating depression in 2003.The main advantage being, no sexual dysfunction, no sexual side effects and no weight gain. There is no sedative effect and dosage is generally much less than used for seizures. If any of the above mentioned combinations are ineffective in controlling depression, the thyroid hormone replacement drug Cytopan or Cytomel or Synthroid can be added to any of the above drug. Atypical anti-psychotics such as low doses of Zyprexa, or Abilify, or Seroquel, and the latest Quetiapine can also be prescribed. 150 mg of Lithium, normally prescribe for Bipolar at much higher doses, can be used safely without having to get regular blood checks. Lift Depression With These 3 Prescriptions- Without-Pills | Susan Heitler | TEDxWilmington

16:01
NOTE FROM TED: This talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, contains assertions about treating depression based on the speaker's own theory. While some viewers might find the prescriptions to be helpful, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf Dr. Heitler discusses a treatment for situational depression (even when we don't know it is situational!) WITHOUT psychopharmacology. Instead, she offers three prescriptions without pills, outlining these prescriptions using an example from her practice. She shows how investigating what makes us angry or upset can help us to re-empower ourselves, and our mental health. Susan Heitler, Ph.D., a Harvard and NYU-educated clinical psychologist, writes a Psychology Today blog that has received over 7.5 million reads. Dr. Heitler first earned recognition when her book From Conflict to Resolution brought understandings of collaborative conflict resolution from the world of legal and business mediation to the practice of psychotherapy. Her Power of Two and Power of Two Workbook– published in six foreign language editions–plus her interactive marriage education website PowerOfTwoMarriage.com, teach the communication skills for marriage success. Dr. Heitler’s most recent book and website combo, Prescriptions Without Pills, offers self-help versions of the techniques she uses in her clinical practice–techniques for relieving depression, anger, and anxiety plus strategies for sustaining well-being. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Medications that can Cause Depression (2018 Update)

11:09
Needed medications can be life-savers, and should never be discouraged. But, very often, a medication with significant side effects can be substituted with a medication which gives the same therapeutic effect, without the unwanted side effects. A single pill can have hundreds of listed "possible" side effects, these can be very hard to keep up with. But, when you take 2 or 3 pills daily, the possible side effects don't just double or triple, they multiply. One medication may not cause depression alone, but when combined with another pill, it might lead to significant depression. This video goes through the most common medications which can risk depression, or worsen existing depression. Bipolar Medications Changed My Life

02:52
I get a lot of questions about bipolar medications and, in this video, I answer them; including how they changed my life for the better. If you’re recently diagnosed, one of the biggest problems is finding the right medication for bipolar disorder that works specifically for you. Unfortunately, this can be extremely difficult and exhausting. After my diagnosis of bipolar 2, the first step was trying various medications to see what worked and what didn't. Unfortunately, the side effects of many of these bipolar medications can be severe, such as weight gain, extreme drowsiness, and other effects that hinder a person's ability to function. There was a point that the bipolar medications seemed to only increase my depressive and emotional behavior. I was incapable of communicating properly with those around me. Finally, I went to my doctors and demanded to find the right routine of medications. It took me around 5 years to find a steady regimen of medications that efficiently managed my bipolar disorder without dampening my personality and increasing my weight. I still experience highs and lows on medication, however, I have more control over it, whereas before my condition was in control of me. Hopefully, in the future, research will uncover new treatment methods with fewer side effects. Until then, do not lose hope and continue communicating with medical professionals seeking the right routine of bipolar medications for you. In the comments, I hope you'll share your experience with bipolar meds and, in what ways, have they helped you. ------- Hannah posts a new video every Monday morning on the HealthyPlace YouTube Channel. 200+ common medications may cause depression, study finds

03:25
New research warns depression could be a side effect of more than 200 commonly prescribed medications. They include beta-blockers for blood pressure, birth control pills, antacids and painkillers. Depression rates more than tripled when people used at least three drugs with the possible side effect, compared to people who take none of those medications. 20 Medications That Cause Memory Loss

04:32
Beware: 20 Medications That Cause Memory Loss Please SUBSCRIBE : http://bit.ly/2e9Su11 Studies have shown that more than 100,000 people die due to prescription drugs annually, and their side-effects lead o hospitalization of around 1.5 million people. Namely, one explanation for this is the fact that numerous drugs are approved before their patent runs out, so they are not properly tested and result in numerous issues among the public. Some of these medications have serious side-effects and affect the brain tissue and lead to memory loss. These drugs which lead to severe cognitive problems are divided into three categories, as follows: 1. Statin drugs. Many studies have shown that cholesterol-lowering drugs lead to memory loss. Moreover, the FDA has recently started to recommend monitoring of the use of these medications. The use of these drugs lead to an inability to focus, and the person thinks that he/she has forgotten something. 2. Sleeping pills. These medications lead to short- term and long-term memory loss. According to research, all kinds of sleeping pills impair memory and performance to a certain extent. Namely, they suppress the action potentials of various brain cells and lower out vigilance, judgment, and alertness. Some of these pills may even cause a state like “blacking out”, which occurs when a person has damaged brain cells due to uncontrolled use of alcohol and cannot remember things that have happened. 3. The ”Anti” drugs. Anti-drugs are all medications which start with “anti-“, like antidepressants, antibiotics, antipsychotics, antispasmodics, antihypertensives, antihistamines, etc. These drugs are the ones that are most harmful in terms of your memory, as they inhibit the activity of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is responsible for the cognitive function and memory. However, numerous drugs of this kind can be easily found over the counter, so if taken in inappropriate doses, they can lead to even more complicated health issues. The following 20 medications lead to memory loss: Drugs for high blood pressure. Painkillers: heroin, morphine, codeine. Lithium. Antihistamines. Methyldopa. For Parkinson’s - glycopyrrolate, atropine, or scopolamine. Sleeping pills. Insulin. Naproxen. Steroids. Chemotherapy drugs. Antibiotics. Drugs for epilepsy- Dilantin and phenytoin. Quinidine. Antidepressants. The use of the medications listed above may cause various symptoms of memory loss, like: Difficulties with following directions. Asking same questions more times. Mood swings and changes in behavior. Getting lost. Forgetting words. In case you have experienced some of these signs frequently, you should consult your doctor in order to change your treatment. These side-effects are temporary, so if you change the therapy on time, you will experience no long-term effects, and these symptoms will fade away as soon as you quit using these medications. However, the best way to stay away from these medications or get off them faster is to start leading a healthy lifestyle and eat a balanced diet, high in brain-boosting nutrients, and be active and positive! ================================= healthy zone, health, healthy, short term memory loss, memory loss, memory loss icd 10, memory loss disease, movies about memory loss, long term memory loss, depression memory loss, what causes memory loss, reasons for memory loss, alcohol memory loss, memory loss test, types of memory loss, memory loss causes, memory loss medication, memory loss symptoms, memory loss due to alcohol, headache memory loss, memory loss drugs Please SUBSCRIBE : http://bit.ly/2e9Su11

Learn more about this webinar at: https://www.bbrfoundation.org/event/dopaminergic-medications-treatment-resistant-depression Each month The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) hosts a Meet the Scientist Webinar featuring a researcher discussing the latest findings related to mental illness. In August 2014, BBRF featured the research of Dr. Jan A. Fawcett of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He presented DOPAMINERGIC MEDICATIONS IN TREATMENT-RESISTANT DEPRESSION. Dr. Fawcett’s career has been devoted to research on and treatment of affective disorders and suicide prevention. He is a principal investigator of the Recurrent Depression Prevention with Medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy project, a five-year NIMH study which is being conducted at Rush Medical College in collaboration with investigators at Vanderbilt University and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Fawcett helped found the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association (now the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance), which created and presented him with the Dr. Jan Fawcett Humanitarian Award. Among his efforts to help educate the public on mental illness, he is a co-author of the book “New Hope for People with Bipolar Disorder.” He is also the Chair of the Mood Disorders Workgroup and a member of the Task Force for DSM-V. Before assuming his current post, Dr. Fawcett worked for 30 years at Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he was Stanley Harris, Sr. Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry. 🧠 5 Popular Drugs That Cause Memory Loss & May Lead To Alzheimer's

This is for a variety of reasons and at the end of this video, I’ll give you natural solutions for improving your energy levels for both your BODY and MIND. However, what’s interesting is that the same reasons that cause fatigue for your body and mind, can also cause memory loss, cognitive problems and may lead to dementia and Alzheimer’s. And even though this is a part of aging, many people are experiencing these negatives at a much younger age. And one reason is due to the drugs people take. And I’m not even referring to weird, rarely used drugs - but some of the most popular drugs that you or someone you know may be using. So today I’m going to quickly list the top 5 drugs that cause short AND long-term memory loss, cognitive problems and actually lead to dementia and Alzheimer's I will also give you natural alternatives as well, so make sure you watch to the end of this video. Statin Cholesterol Lowering Drugs For almost 2 decades now it’s been known that cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, such as Lipitor (Atorvastatin), Crestor (Rosuvastatin), Zocor (Simvastatin) and similar statins cause memory loss and cognitive problems. In fact, this is what I personally discovered with my own parents in 1998 and why I found natural alternatives to these toxic drugs for them. And over the years, it’s been proven more and more that these problems are the RULE and not the “exception”. In fact, researchers3 have now realized well over 80% of statin drug users, experience memory problems. Sadly, these are one of the most prescribed drugs on the planet. At the end of this video, I’ll give you natural alternatives to these drugs - the exact formula my own parents use. Anti-Depressants As much as 20% of the adult population use anti-depressants1, which is a depressing situation. In fact, in the past decade, the use of anti-depressants has increased by over 64%. According to a Harvard study2, anti-depressants can cause memory loss. The worst one being Paxil (paroxetine). However, problems can also be seen with others such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or sertraline (Zoloft), or a different type of antidepressants such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) or venlafaxine (Effexor) Anti-Anxiety Drugs Depression and anxiety typically go together. And anti-anxiety drugs, such as Benzodiazepines, cause what is called anterograde amnesia — which is the inability to form memories from events going forward in time. The most popular “benzo” drugs being alprazolam (Xanax) diazepam (Valium) lorazepam (Ativan) temazepam (Restoril) clonazepam (Klonopin) chlordiazepoxide (Librium) triazolam (Halcion) Again, I’ll give you natural alternatives to reduce anxiety at the end of this video. Cold Medicines In a Harvard study2, cold or allergy medications also cause memory loss. This would also include antihistamines (brompheniramine, chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine) Some well-known OTC would be Midol PM® or Tylenol PM® (containing Acetaminophen, Diphenhydramine) Motrin PM® or Advil PM® (containing Diphenhydramine, Ibuprofen) PediaCare Children's Allergy and Cold® (containing Diphenhydramine, Phenylephrine) Robitussin Night Time Cough and Cold® (containing Diphenhydramine, Phenylephrine) Benadryl® Sominex® Unisom® Sadly, I had taken some of these drugs many years ago… I thought that since it’s OTC, it’s probably safe, but they aren’t. A drug is a drug - no matter how you take it or where you get it. Heart Burn / Antacids Another type of popular category of drugs that cause memory problems is heartburn and antiacids. The worst being cimetidine (Tagamet). However, the problem is also seen to a lesser extent with other similar drugs such as lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec), or esomeprazole (Nexium) I know a lot of people who take these drugs. I would rather they improved their diet, but some people would rather just take a pill. BONUS: Pain Medications ======================================== Thank you for watching. Depression in Adults with Epilepsy

09:01
The higher rate of depression in brain disorders, including epilepsy may be due both to the physical disability they cause and also to the disruption of normal activity in that part of the brain that regulates our emotions. Medications used to treat epilepsy can sometimes trigger depression, or more commonly, produce side effects that resemble depression, like sluggishness or trouble thinking clearly. HOW I HEALED FROM PSYCHOSIS, CHRONIC DEPRESSION, PANIC ATTACKS WITH NO MEDICATIONS!

30:11
Sharing my holistic healing journey with healing from SEVERE DEEP PSYCHOSIS, DEPRESSION, SUICIDAL IDEATIONS, Chronic lingering ANXIETY, PANIC ATTACKS, and PERSISTENT BINGE EATING. Forgot a few other points: 1) never claim psych diagnosis. This was something I NEVER did. Only speaking with these labels for video purposes and that what ppl recognize. 2) SELF LOVE & Acceptance IS PRIORITY OVER EVERYTHING. Resistance hinders healing and i was in fight mode for several months. 3. NATURE AND MEDITATION. Meditation wasnt something that I could personally handle until several yrs later. But sitting in the grass and absorbing the sunlight is always healing. 4. Diet: Usually if you initiate an kundalini awakening during your journey, you will be intuitively prompted to decrease or refrain from eating meat and animal products. I believe it has to happen in phases. I don't think jumping right into Gut healing animal products diets are really what the body could handle when severely overloaded and needing to purge physically, energetically, emotionally, parasites, heavy metals, past lives type stuff. There a lot of purging happening if u choose to awaken during your healing journey.. vegetable foods, detox juices, work more with the purging for a while then transition to gut healing diet when heavy purging is over. I wouldn't recommend sugary fruits. melons, berries, acai, and green apple type stuff is better. Fruit is heavily altered and most are way too sweet to eat in large amounts. . High BITTER greens & are very healing especially energetically, avoid tons of veggies that disrupt thyroid function. THYROID needs to be optimal while detoxing. low sugar, trace minerals, gelatins, and collagens is better but every case is different depending on multiple different factors. Don't think I could ever eat the amount of animal products I eat now, back then. NO WAY..detoxing is happening on all levels if your kundalini starts to activate. Can't really explain everything here...lol Feel free to email me if any questions or would like further guidance: renewedhealing33@gmail.com Never mute your voice or disown your story. It just prolongs your integration..lol IG: https://www.instagram.com/nadiairis_/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100012147274440 website: https://nadiairis.squarespace.com/ I'm Nadia, Holistic health nurse, Certified Mind-Body Coach, Reiki energy healer, & intuitive empath , here to help those needing guidance through their awakening that may have difficult symptoms such as constant anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and episodic psychosis. I suffered through a mental breakdown (extreme dissociation from reality), depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, binge eating, and the list goes on but choose not to take any pills and pursued a more holistic route which eventually prompted me into a kundalini awakening journey. I'm here to share my journey and help other out of darkness into connection to their divinity.
