Needed medications can be life-savers, and should never be discouraged. But, very often, a medication with significant side effects can be substituted with a medication which gives the same therapeutic effect, without the unwanted side effects.
A single pill can have hundreds of listed "possible" side effects, these can be very hard to keep up with. But, when you take 2 or 3 pills daily, the possible side effects don't just double or triple, they multiply. One medication may not cause depression alone, but when combined with another pill, it might lead to significant depression.
This video goes through the most common medications which can risk depression, or worsen existing depression. This video is not medical advice, do not stop or change any medication you are presently taking without consulting first with your doctor.
All Anti-Depression Med (paradoxical)
Sedatives and antianxiety drugs
-Benzodiazepines (xanax, valium, klonipin, ativan)
-PPI's - Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid
-H2 Blockers - Pepcid, Zantac, Axid
-Penicillin G procaine

Thanks so much for the information! I suffer with bipolar disorder and anxiety and have been on most of the anxiety and mental health drugs you've mentioned. I'm so happy to report that I'm not on ANY of them now and have been stable for the last 6 years!
Tess McCormick - If you are on medications at this time you should change this message. You state you are not on ANY of the, now, which is misleading. Someone who is bi-polar may believe it is possible to take no medication to be stable. This is not correct-
I have an RX for Hydroxyzine (?) but I rarely take it as it makes me feel groggy. I rarely go on SSRIs but only when my coping mechanisms aren't working. Heck, I avoid using my inhaler because I swear it triggers my GAD.
+Darloonie - I have a 1st cousin that is on so much pain medication that I can't believe she is still alive. She lives about 2 1/2 hrs. from me, so I haven't seen her in quite a while, but we talk on the phone a lot. She is so addicted to pain medication and these doctors over in Tulsa, Oklahoma, just keep giving them to her. Since I've been on Keto, March of 2017, I've just started tossing so many prescription drugs away. I suffered from panic attacks on the highway when I'd drive. So I quit driving on highways some 40 yrs. ago. It has really messed my life up. About 7 or 8 months ago, I had to go a dentist that was over an hour away. That meant I had to drive on a highway. I asked my Mom to drive me but when she got to my house, she asked if I wanted to drive. I decided to give it a try. As I left the city I live in and reached the highway, I just waited for a panic attack to happen. It never did. I drove all the way there and all the way back. I was in shock. Then I had to go back a couple of months later and I drove myself. No problem at all. The only thing I had done differently in my life was going on Keto and quit eating or drinking sugar or anything that turns into sugar. This is how much sugar and junk food affected my life.
Would you do something on personal hygiene and skin care products?
Six month ago, at age 57, I got on a ketogenic diet, lost 50 pounds, got from obese to normal weight, with many side benifits such as greatly improved skin, no more joint pains or migrains. Your videos have been so helpful throu my journey.
I have also stopped using schampoo, shower gel, conditioners, lotions etc, just using some baking soda for my daily showers. Also brushing my teeth without tooth paste. Yet one more benifit of my diet I found is better breath and taste in my mouth, people I trust will confirm that I smell perfectly fine, I feel clean and my hair feels great. Yes, I still do wash my hands with soap after going to bathroom and before cooking etc. Would be great if you would do something on how we treat our biggest organ, our skin.
Valium is a muscle relaxer, not an anti-anxiety pill. It reduces anxiety by relievng one of the physical symptoms of anxiety, name muscle tenseness. When your brain senses your body is more relaxed, it 'believes' there is less to be anxious about, and reduces anxiety
I only found this out bc I was Rx'd Valium for muscle spasms. The doctor might as well have offered me heroin, I was so surprised. I only take it PRN (5mg, the lowest dose), and never for more than two days in a row. If I take it more often, I frequently wake up irritable or even crying.
It's fine for occasional use tho, a 30 pill scrip usually expires before I finish it
Dr. B. New sub here. Newly retired RN. This vid was the most concise and informative on med/food intetactions. You have a clear, concise and personable delivery style...yet you remain professional throughout. Question: am going keto and see positive differences after two months. I no longer carry a "bile holding tank" in my body (gallbladder). No signs or symptoms, but am I stressing my liver by upping meat/dairy PRO? Thx for all u do.
Hello, Dr.! Could you please let me know if a keto diet could help get rid of my costochondritis, which is an inflammation of the sternum? It results in chest heaviness and difficulty in breathing. Thank you!
I take both Carvedilol & Sotalol twice a day...LOL!!....I always tell my doc that I feel like I am walking uphill through molasses....they tell me to get used to it because there are no other meds available to keep me this side of the dirt. Pffffft!! 🤦🏼♀️
Hi Doctor Berry, thank you so much for this info.
Quick question, I have severe outdoor summer allergies and serve chronic sinus pressure in the winter. I take a Lot of Advil Cold and Sinus which really helps the best, but I also notice the depression it causes in the winter months. Do you know of any alteratives to help with sinus issues? I am male 49, 5'10" started the KETO diet July 15, 2018 at 213 pounds and now weigh 190, my goal is 180.
I've watched a lot your videos and feel I owe you a lot of thanks for my success. I have told all my employees about your videos. My truck driver started watching you and has lost a lot of unhealthy weight!!!
I will be checking out your patron page!
Thanks so much!
If you've ever taken any benzo drug and went through all the tapering and withdrawal to come off it, NEVER let your doctor give you any antibiotic from the fluoroquinilone class, like ciprofloxacin. It may bring back all the withdrawal symptoms and you may have to go back on the benzo and taper off again. This happened to me in 2014 when I got a UTI and my doctor gave me cipro. Within 2 weeks I started experiencing benzo w/d symptoms like derealization, depersonalization, anxiety. Ended up going back on klonopin after being off it for 7.5 years and spent the next 6 months tapering off AGAIN.
I was overweight, told by my doctor that I was going to be going on medication for diabetes and I told him to let me know what I need to do to not take medication. I told him that I had a plan that I had made for myself in 1999 when I was younger and learning about the glycemic index. It had a plan that I geared to myself and after 9 weeks had lost 15 lbs. I was exercising regularly and cut out my carbs. I've since shed another 10 lbs and I am on week 22 of my change. Feeling great and surprised myself. It is possible. 💗
Could you please do a video on psychotic behavior. My friend thinks people want to kill or harm her and her family. She hears people talking that no one else hears. She wont stay by herself ever. Thinks people are in the house and basement to hurt her. Thinks her phone and tablet has been bugged. Thinks there are little tiny robots spying on her. This all got bad three years ago when she was tramatized when someone tried to break in her house. She had her brain checked and results were fine. With all these things going on, she is totally alert, normal in all other ways, and no one would realize anything if she didn't tell them about this. She says she knows she is not crazy. Her doctor thinks she got better because my friend tells the doctor she is ok now. We don't know what else to do because she wont go to psychotic Dr because she is afraid the voices she hears will harm her. Help please...…..
Btw..weaning off my ecitalopram, stopped the Ibuprofen and metoprolol, and on keto...I have no gallbladder....the Gerd is so horrible.
I need to change Dr's but would really appreciate your advice on what to do about the heartburn.
P.s. we love you too!
Hi Dr Berry!
Thank you for your help and advice! ! I have been on several meds you have mentioned, and they are the same ones that make it hard to lose weight! Metoprolol. Omeprazole, ecitalopram, ibuprofen! ! No wonder I have been so fat and depressed! I want off of them all..I tried to go off omeprazole and tried ACV but the heartburn was so horrible that I started it again. Will my body still digest the fats with low stomach acid?
I believe that many people who are taking prescribed drugs who suffer from depression aren’t even aware of it.I believe that all these drugs pharmaceutical companies are pushing can be the reason why suicide rates have been at record high numbers
I have to strongly disagree that anti-seizures, antidepressants, and benzodiazapines worsen depression symptoms, especially if your depression is neurochemical and is the result of something like dipolar disorder, and yes, do talk to your PSYCHIATRIST before listening to anyone else. My psychiatrist caved into the "benzos are too addictive" hysteria and put me on an anti-seizure, which works fine, but I have to admit, I did much better with my benzo/ antidepressant combo. I disagree that benzodiazapines are addictive. I took a very low dose and never needed to increase and truly felt stable, people even told me my facial expressions looked better. I drank way less too. I'm getting a little suspicious of all the quackery around diet being the cure for everything, and the hysteria over taking the slightest amount of medication. Don't get me wrong, I'm careful with my diet, a lot of foods do trigger symptoms! I do relaxation exercises, I physically exercise. I takes it all to battle my bipolar. My suggestion is find really good health care providers, get smart, and serious about your health and go with what works best FOR YOU! Be it natural remedies, medication, therapy, prayer, or a little bit of it all!
PPI, Proton Pump Inhibitors: The prescription versions of Prilosec and Prevacid are Pantoprazole and Omeprazole, incase anyone didn't recognize them from their OTC names. Btw, I'm totally off those now! Yay!!
Another outstanding video Doc. Guy's and some gal's. Doc's right if your given a durietic with thiazin for HP, it can screw up your love life, not joking, zip nada, that alone can send you into depression. Funny, it was a women pa and Doctor that gave me it???🤕. Fire them because they wouldn't listen to me. Found a great Cardio Doctor who's also KETO.🤓 So far my number's are good and down 100lbs. When my next appt., with him we going to see how going off lasarton potassium will be. HP been in the normal rang. That will be the last HP pill won't have to take🙃.
😱 Thank you for this information!! My sons pediatrician just put him on clonidine for adhd and I was just also put on metoprolol for frequent pvc’s and htn and could not figure out why I felt like complete garbage!! I’ve definitely got to get with them and fix this! Thank you thank you!
+siobhan irish Hi there! I understand there are different “grades” of CBD oils, I hope Dr Berry gets back to us regarding this issue, fingers crossed! The oil did wonders to my daughter who suffers from anxiety! Much love to you!
Oh, I never thought to ask about this, I am so glad you brought it up. I hope the Dr. gives us some information on CBD oil. It costs me over $200 for a bottle. I can't say I really, truly feel much difference in mood/depression or in body aches. However, I was taking it daily before I started keto 13 days ago.
But most Docs will say "so your PPI is making you depressed, well lets just put you on a pill for that. It may increase panic attacks so here is another pill for that. Now that pill will cause tremors so here is another pill for that" etc etc. We need more Doctors like you Ken. Thank you!
I just recently got off of gabapentin, which I took for over 10 years. Hoping that I can move past the stress and anxiety that I have suffered from the past 5 years. Also added in the Keto lifestyle the last 5 months. Between the two I am looking forward to 2019-
I'm on gabapentin for trigeminal neuralgia. May I ask if you have/had that condition, or was it something else? If it was neuralgia, how long did it take before you saw a change in your pain levels? I started keto about a month ago, and I haven't noticed any difference yet.
Over the last 11mths I have found proof that processed carbs are the 'only' cause of all 'my' imflammation and psychological imbalances. I gather there was trauma to start it all off but my body simply wouldnt let it go. Now its gone. But only if I stay off processed carbs. The pain is still out there. Its hiding behind every pizza slice and every muffin ever baked. The longer Ive gone without them the more dramatic the response when I eat them....... and to think back to all those medications I was taking when all it took was a change of diet. SCARY.
Thank You for all of your hard work and dedication that you put into your videos, and for the wealth of knowledge and information that you provide us with the viewers. Take care my friend and May God Bless and Protect you and your family. 🤠🙏👍❤
KETO Diamond There are many people who suffer from depression and aren’t even aware they have it or of its severity.I believe that all these drugs pharmaceutical companies are pushing is the reason why suicide rates have been at record high numbers.
@KenDBerryMD please help me.
I have since January been on a keto diet, I used to eat loads of eggs, butter etc and felt great but after a blood test due to low testosterone the docs noticed my cholesterol was at 8.9 NHS UK rating.
They then proceeded to slap me on 20mg of atorvastatin and told I must stop my consumption of butter and eggs and if possible stop keto.
Ever since my anxiety has gone off the scale.
The Cholesterol specialist checked me over saying with a rating that high I will definitely have deposits of cholesterol in my body and proceeded to squeeze various parts of my body.
He looked confused as he couldn't find any deposits anywhere but said I need to stop keto and go on statins.
I stopped eating butter and eggs, yes it brought my cholesterol down but now I feel lethargic, depressed and anxiety off the scale.
I know what I should do but the NHS specialist has scared the life out of me.
I know you can't tell me what to do but any advice of any kind what I could say to my doctor etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Any surgery is a huge trauma to the body, which can cause or worsen depression. There is newer research that says anesthesia can cause depression, which makes sense because it interferes with neural transmissions. Look up Dr. Emery Brown, a neuroscientist at MIT. He's been researching the subject.
I was able to come off my depression meds after getting my vitamin D3 level up to normal. Unfortunately still have to take NSAIDs for chronic pain issues. Hopefully keto diet will eventually help with that.
Big Pharma just keeps pushing this corrupt crap. When the hell are people going to wake up and tell them to shove them pills up their butts. We all have got to get back the natural ways and a keto diet asap.
Wow. I'm on Atenolol and HCTZ! Yikes. I see my doctor tomorrow and will ask about changing. My BP is still high on those 2 drugs. What might I ask my doc for that would be less harmful until my diet changes lower my BP?
Get on some good Supplements. I got my husband off B.P medicine
He takes Fish oil
Every day and hes doing Great!!
Research for yourself a vitamin BIBLE
You'll be surprised to find out vitamin Deficiency causes "
Been on tenormin since 23 I'm 53 today and have had depression for years and was diagnosed 2016 with major depression syndrome. Was on paxil for about 5 years 40mg daily and got off in 2005 and was put on celexa 40mg daily in 2013 and have cut down to 20mg daily.
Have been on stomach medicine like prilosec otc or prevacid for acid reflux for at least 20 years daily.
Quit drinking 2016 and smoking 2 months ago and had my gallbladder removed june 2017 and was told then I have fatty liver and recent triglycerides 213. I've got to change something for sure.
Thank and God bless you Doctor for the videos. Very informative. Just found you. Peace and love +
Everything the VA prescribed me yesterday was on the list. I voiced my concerns and was basically told, "Take these or don't come back." I have a couple suggestions on where they can start cutting that budget.
Talk to your pharmacist to get the best info on possible drug interactions & side effects. The good ones will also tell you which meds you can ask your doctor to stop if you're on multiple drugs for the same problem. But if your doctor told you "Take these or don't come back", find another doctor, period. Most VA doctors are a damn site better than that.
Thank you Dr. Berry. I'm a Veteran and damn near everything you said most Veterans are on. Does Ambien make you depressed at 10 mg PO Qhs? Also what is the dose on the HCTZ where you can have problems? People who having pain listen to Dr. Berry and also look up Pete Ecosgue and his self adjustment techniques to relieve pain. Real miracles these guys are!
Thank you so much, Dr. Berry! Also, could you make a video on Hypercholesterolemia? What are the risks? Can people who have this condition eat a low carb high fat ketogenic diet? Dr. Berg once mentioned that apple cider vinegar combined with lemon can be a powerful ally in this case.
As always, thanks a lot!
Is there anything I can include in my Keto diet that will help increase ACE inhibitions. I am on a fairly low does of Ramipril but would like to get off it completely. I have heard garlic can help but how much and how often do I need to eat it to have a significant effect? It is a huge subject but I would love to see you make some videos on what foods can take the place of or even just help lower doses of some of these drugs, even the over the counter drugs. Perhaps you could cover just one class of drugs per video.
Having 15 to 16 years experiance in pharmaceutical industries I know what these drugs do to your body and being a Chemist also opened my eye to so many of these chemical drugs
Thank God I off of my Blood pressure medication *Miacardis* after 2.5 years
Stress from you make the worker in pharma busnisses consume their drug first because of the amount of stress that the people handling
Thank God when I change my diet to Keto 4 years ago
I am free from pharma drug 😊
Thank you Doc. For this vidoe 👍👍 keep it up with more latest info.for side effects of the drugs
I've been taking Prednisone for over 7 years. I've been tapering it down slowly. I have to say doing a Keto diet with IF has been a tremendous help with the depression. I've been successful getting it down to below 5mg a day. It's a big deal for me!! Before doing Keto I would not be able to function taking anything below 10 mg a day. Now, I'm grumpy for a few days and I literally bounce back. The scale has actually started moving downward a little too!!
Here's the crazy part: they've started putting deuterium in medications recently in order to make them stay in the body longer before being excreted - so they can reduce the dosages. The kicker is that deuterium itself can cause depression and a host of other diseases, because it's a metabolic poison. When it gets into the ATP synthase molecule (which is basically a finely-tuned nanomotor spinning at 9000 RPM) it literally breaks it.
+Tawnya Elliott GAD is Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Arthritis is awful; my Great-Grandma suffered with it as does my Grandma. It has limited her activities somewhat. I only need Ibuprofen sometimes for female stuff and wonky knees.
Crafty Crafter I am not sure what GAD is, sorry. I have severe osteoarthritis and take NSAIDs to lessen the need for stronger meds. I do take Aleeve sometimes but it is not something I want to take daily. I guess the important things are how badly you need them and how often you take them.
Antidepressants are medications that can help relieve symptoms of depression, social anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders, seasonal affective disorder, and dysthymia, or mild chronic depression, as well as other conditions.
They aim to correct chemical imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to be responsible for changes in mood and behavior.
Depression Medications (Antidepressants)
These are the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressant.
Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are used to treat major depression, mood disorders, and possibly but less commonly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, menopausal symptoms, fibromyalgia, and chronic neuropathic pain.
SNRIs raise levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters in the brain that play a key role in stabilizing mood.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. They are effective in treating depression, and they have fewer side effects than the other antidepressants.
SSRIs block the reuptake, or absorption, of serotonin in the brain. This makes it easier for the brain cells to receive and send messages, resulting in better and more stable moods.
They are called "selective" because they mainly seem to affect serotonin, and not the other neurotransmitters.
