Getting stuck in the negatives (and how to get unstuck) | Alison Ledgerwood | TEDxUCDavis

Оценок: 39036 | Просмотров: 3787426
Alison Ledgerwood joined the Department of Psychology at UC Davis in 2008 after completing her PhD in social psychology at New York University. She is interested in understanding how people think, and how they can think better. Her research, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, investigates how certain ways of thinking about an issue tend to stick in people's heads. Her classes on social psychology focus on understanding the way people think and behave in social situations, and how to harness that knowledge to potentially improve the social world in which we all live. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Most easy way to think positive and stay focused can be achieved just by meditating for atleast 15 to 30 minutes . While mediating just concentrate your mind towards the inhale and exhale of air. Surely you will find difference , because it really does.

Glass half full or half empty doesn't matter. What matters is how much you want to pour in the glass.

Thoughts lead to feelings, which lead to behavior. Be aware of, challenge/question, and manage your thoughts so that they don't lead to negative feelings and behaviors. If you don't know how to do this, seek professional help, and there is also lots of info from reputable websites that can provide techniques for managing our thoughts.

It is possible to train our mind to look at the positives. I was curious about this since I was young yet I didn’t have the tools. Thank God I kept my positive outlook and now helping others to look at the brighter side of life through the power of gratitude. Awesome talk! 😘

We focus on the negative so that we can problem-solve in the backs of our minds. We are looking for answers to problems, not just arbitrarily choosing to view things negatively.

It's quite normal out minds and brains are working focusing on bad things because bad things are the one we need to fix. So by thinking and speaking about them, you have a feeling that you are looking for the solution. Because we are thought that be worried means we care about something/someone. And by those small things that we see as good actually won't change our super strong negatively thinking programs in the head. I tried it! So there must be some different technics to help us get rid of the negative programmed set. If some of you have some advice for techniques please let me know :). Have a great full day! Ana :)

thanks to all social systems and employment opportunities for never failing to criticise us for the one time we got it wrong and not congratulating us for the 99 times we got it right. Somewhere along the line, expectation rules out the latter and manipulation comes to mind in the former.

Glass half full or half empty. First of all who the F cares and it depends on what is in the glass, is it poison, is it something delicious.Since I'm not directly involved with this fictitious glass it's not affecting my life at all. Also, people who gamble a lot only tell about when they win and hey do this over and over and over. For some people they choose to only remember the good.

Now I know why Yoda said "fear is the path to the Dark Side" and "it is not powerful but more tempting". Negativity is really hardwired in our brains and feelings of revenge, resentment immediately hold on to our minds. If we can retrain ourselves to look for the upside, we can redeem ourselves. Fear is really path to the Dark Side even if you will not be susceptible to it. Let's train our heads to see the positives.

Nice. Is negative dwelling an instinctive defence thing? Not long ago people were more vulnerable to predators. Even after a few good days, they would still be worrying about that day they were nearly eaten by a lion.

Thank you. Great insight and take-away from your experience and research. I hope that educators, mentors, and people of authority listen to this talk. What they say to others can cause others to get stuck in negativity. Life in itself is a challenge, and for me, there is no need to keep on challenging people just to help them grow.

Our "reptilian" vs "conscient brain".Animal life it's based on "reptilian brain".We mesure our "conscient brain" in IQ.Lower IQ, balance tilted to "reptilian brain".It's not about good or bad way of thinking.

I can totally relate to this... I have had more negative experiences in my life than positive but still try to see the glass as half full, even though it is incredibly difficult.

I recently found out I have OCD, mental illness and a drug addition problem. I sought help and ended up at Lakeridge Village. They messed me up worse and instilled negative thinking in me so bad I started feeling ashamed of myself and adapted their training of negative thinking. Further the instilled into me FEAR, robbed me repeatedly and violated my recipient and constitutional rights repeatedly and then kicked me out into the streets homeless for complaining. Today I'm stuck in the negatives emotionally and in thinking. This video has reminded me that approaching life with a strong positive spirit leading the way I pray and believe I'll get back to "the glass is full" with enough room to learn positiveness again.

Please I do not know what to do because I moved to a new school and I had a friend last year that went to the same school in my elementary school but now I'm new in middle school and she has no friends and she does not know how to make new friends so I feel bad and stay with her when I get so many opportunities to go sit and talk with NEW people and I really want to but I just can not without leaving her and if I go with other people and have more friends then she will leave me and then and be alone again and I dont what that go happen and in her eyes I will be a fake friend and I am not a fake friend. People ask if I want to sit with them at lunch but I always say sorry I am busy. But I want to sit with new people once and a while, you know.

I found this upload very interesting - so called psychics{all charlatans} work by throwing out loads of this and that and eventually they'll get a hit and people soon forget how many miss's they had and just take the hits, they might not even relate straight to that hit but will somehow in their minds twist what they've been told and make it fit to something in their life or someone they know but clearly forget most if not all of the miss's almost instantly.

I'm told I laugh too much and I need to be less happy and be more serious😐 little do they know I'm going through alot in the inside and I try to appear happy on the outside inhopes to gain happiness.

Reading the comments here, it is nice to see that this talk inspires people, but looking at it anylitically, I would be interested how high is the euphoria with good news to how low the depression is with the bad news in comparison. I would also be interested in knowing if people that get bad news and let it affect their lives, when they don't get back right away to their original base line if eventually they accept their new mood as the new base line. Thus bad news brings them lower, new base line, bad news brings them lower, new base line, so good news isn't viewed as good news anymore. Clinical depression. You people are right though, it is a good talk that shows we should start helping people view things in a positive aspect.

I thank and agree with her point wholeheartedly. The only little grain of salt I found was the statistic about the "Economy" and "Confidence" example, which from my point of view clearly is caused by the extreme increase in income inequality after the recession - especially in the US. So, I'll still add this to my favorites since this tiny "grain of salt" can easily be explained and fixed...and also explains, why people got "stuck" in that mindset: since when you do not have the experience of things going better for your personally, you cannot make it up - that won't pay your bills (thinking you have more money than you actually have ;-) ).

Evolution has made watching out for danger a priority so you are wiser when you remember not to repeat what fails. Failure is a great teacher. Avoid making mistakes and you will do better and survive longer. Also remember to move on having learned the lesson. We are creatures of habit so be aware of any repetition of negative thinking . Replace a bad habit with a good one.

The economy around the 2008 Subprime Mortgage Crisis isn't a particularly good example. Although the stock market bounced back, most of the gains returned to the more affluent bracket, where the much more populous middle-middle and lower-middle classes languished with their reduced spending power. So to most of us, the recovery matches the consumer outlook graph Alison presented. That _may_ have to do with the negativity attitude-polarization Dr. Ledgerwood suggests, but it also correlates with the common real experience Americans have faced in the aftermath of the 2008 crisis without that bias.

Interesting talk but it focused on studies demonstrating a transfer from positive thinking to negative, without also showing corresponding studies that demonstrate what led from negative thinking to positive thinking. I would really like to learn more about evidence based approaches to enhancing positive thinking.
