The difference between insulin for Diabetes and Depression. To diagnosis Diabetes there is a A1C Blood Sugar Tests and if positive there are additional subsequent blood sugar tests to measure blood sugar. No Doctor would give a patient they think might have Diabetes insulin based on SYMPTOMS ALONE., With Depression it is diagnosed based on symptoms of negative emotions with no knowledge of the patient's Brain Chemistry. However, there are no current Medical Tests or Scans on the Brain to measure serotonin and dopamine in the Brain to diagnosis and rule out physical depression. I believe that there needs to be a Medical Tests that measures serotonin and dopamine in the Brain to see if someone really has chemical imbalances in the Brain.

After getting through the worst part of effexor wd i wont even sympathise with people who "can't" quit ice or heroin etc. Nothing can be worse than a.d wd.

It's not medication, it's a very harmful drug that messes up our body's pathways and should be more illegal than what drug dealers go to jail and are killed for in some countries for selling now

The Nedley Depression/Anxiety Recovery Program helped me tremendously--and I've seen it help many others. The success rates are unsurpassed. That and Energy Psychology changed my life!

You need to do some serious research on these drugs before you give advise. Anti depressants destroy the natural function of the brain and body so basically the longer you are on them the more damage they do and most of the problems caused even after discontinuation of the drug are permanent. The proper advise would be get off any way you can but you must get off because these ssri drugs have been proven to take up to 20 years off of your lifespan if you stay on them long-term. You are much better off to never even start on them in the first place with so many other natural alternatives at our disposal. Big Pharma wants your money but has no real interest in keeping you alive and healthy. More people in the US die every year as a direct result of anti depressant use than they do from homicides... By telling people it's not smart to quit taking them you are potentially killing people with your words. THINK BEFORE YOU POST!!!!
HealthyPlace Mental Health (6 месяцев назад)
Hello Stevo McSteve. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. However, many people with depression benefit from antidepressant medication. That's a fact. And while some benefit from "natural alternatives," the research shows that those with moderate to severe major depression do not. Regarding your claim that more people die from antidepressant use than homicide in the U.S., that is patently false. Yes, there is a warning label on antidepressant medication that, especially in younger people and when starting the medication, antidepressants can trigger homicidal and suicidal thoughts. That is something that people need to be aware of. Finally, at HealthyPlace, we don't tell people what to do. That is a decision to be made between the person and their doctor and treatment team. On the other hand, taking what people say on the internet as "fact" without researching it and discussing it with your doctor before initiating treatment or making any changes in your treatment - now that's dangerous. Who knew about the withdrawals, doctors are unaware too. After tapering also one has withdrawals so what are we talking about here. Why would any doctor prescribe any medication without a confirmed diagnosis and if there isn't any for mental illnesses then why prescribe at all ??? So in my very limited common sense I'm made to understand that doctors are doing clinical trials on humans and the cost of their lives. Wow, what an educated bunch of nerds.

I’ll never take a antidepressant ever again. Not only do they not work on my depression, I always had thoughts of hurting myself on them. I take a mood stabilizer and it cured my depression.
HealthyPlace Mental Health (7 месяцев назад)
Hi Tim. Thanks for sharing that. So, on the package insert, there is a warning that in some people antidepressants can lead to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The insert says this especially happens when some people initially start taking antidepressant medication. Regarding the mood stabilizer, that's amazing! I'm glad that helped. How long did it take before you started noticing the depression relief? Hannah

Unfortunately many doctors don't want to get involved in tapers or suggest tapers that are too fast. Many doctors have cold turkeyed patients off benzos, which should be a crime. I've dealt with this problem for over 5 years and heard the same story from so many others. Doctors are good at giving meds but not at tapering patients off.

Insulin is something you need as a type1 ... not to compare with antidepressants !

Can someone help? I'm 28. I suffer from chronic migraines due to being legally blind from retinopathy of prematurity and the migraines happen with eye strain. I was put on cymbalta for these headache issues. I've only been on 60mg. For a year and this month has been crazy for my family. It seems I've dropped pills on accident or something and my pharmacy won't refill my prescription for 5 more days. I've been off it two already. I'm getting ill constantly running to the bathroom. And the worst part is nightmares. I've had 6 this afternoon, 7 last night. 4 the night before. It's caused two migraines and this most recent nightmare i was "awake" for it towards the end and could not move or speak- just sit and watch the tv on until it passed. I know I'm rambling but please does anyone have advice? I am afraid to go to sleep tonight and I'm never really afraid of anything. I've gotten sick twice typing this. I don't drive because of my low vision and my wife is recovering from surgery but i REALLY don't want an ambulance for some sort of panic attack. I feel like a wuss but this is so horrible. I just want a good night's sleep

HealthyPlace Mental Health Thsnk you. Doing that as we speak.

Hello Brandon. You may be dealing with antidepressant withdrawal - side-effects from suddenly stopping your antidepressant medication. I would strongly advise you to call your doctor to discuss what is going on. Amanda

My doctor messed up and did not give me refills, then did not fill before going on vacation. The nurses say they called it in but there is no refills at the pharmacy. 5 days they have not refilled the med and the last call from the md office was on a Friday and she assured me the med was there waiting for me. Not! now I can't stop crying. I had to perform my job while crying all day. My head is fuzzy, zapping and pressure, nausea, chills, sweats, and I want to just quit life and live with my mommy. I am in my 50's for crying out loud! I hate my doctor. I think they are cruel and sadistic to do this to me. I feel like hell and am crying again. This is the worst thing I have ever had to go through. Any advice?
Di Lyles (1 год назад)
I went to the urgent care and they gave me the script. I am going to a new doctor Monday. I will be going off this med slowly.
HealthyPlace Mental Health (1 год назад)
And if all that doesn't work, I would consider going to the emergency room at your local hospital.
HealthyPlace Mental Health (1 год назад)
Hi Di. Yes, I would call your doctor again and also call the pharmacy and explain the doctor keeps telling you the prescription has been called in and ask them to call the doctor directly. Also, I was just thinking, I wonder if the doctor called it in to the wrong pharmacy - so I would confirm that too. Amanda

i'm off the prozac 20mg for 7 months and i still have trouble breathing and i also feel like my teeth are moving like some kind a pressure on my teeth i don't know how much longer i can go
HealthyPlace Mental Health (2 года назад)
So both antidepressants AND the underlying anxiety and depression could cause teeth grinding.
HealthyPlace Mental Health (2 года назад)
Hey, I just looked up 'tooth grinding antidepressants' and found this page: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/teeth-grinding/Pages/Causes.aspx The page says, "Teeth grinding can be associated with mental or psychological problems, such as stress and anxiety. Studies have shown around 70% of cases of sleep bruxism are caused by stress or anxiety, which affects people subconsciously while they're asleep. High levels of work-related stress can have a significant adverse affect on your sleep and trigger episodes of sleep bruxism. Being stressed or anxious may also cause you to clench your jaw or grind your teeth. Bruxism can also sometimes be caused by taking certain antidepressants used to treat depression and anxiety."
HealthyPlace Mental Health (2 года назад)
Hopelessness and not knowing how much longer you can go on is very serious, and you should talk to someone you trust about it, as well as a suicide hotline if it gets too intense (http://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/). I'm sorry the prozac is having such a lasting effect. I'm not familiar with all the side-effects of prozac (I'm not a doctor or therapist), but you should go see your doctor and tell her that you're still having these problems AND feeling so hopeless about them. As a side note, in my personal experience, grinding my teeth at night causes that sensation for me - as if my teeth are readjusting themselves all day long. I didn't even know I did it until I saw my dentist and she noticed the wear on my teeth.

You have the same view as everyone else out there. Don't go cold turkey. I haven't taken my meds a week now and I just get these shocks shivers to the leg. Also I'm working out more better in gym but feel these unbelievable muscle pain. But I'm not sure that withdrawals could be as serious as effects people in different ways, to their body chemistry

I had a disruption in my medication for a few days and lordy lord, I got full blown flue feeling and uncontrollable electric shock ( brain zaps) shooting through my brain, down my spinal cord, electric dizziness feeling, it was awful. I know make sure I have large backup reserve. My Celexa has been the best life changer ever. I never plan to get rid of it. It has helped in ways I never thought anything could. All the racing negative thoughts, the uncontrollable panic and anxiety disappeared.

scottyb453 & caketheory, I'm not saying it is know for certain" what the "cause" of severe depression is but there is definitely chemical changes that takes place in a person's body who has depression. This is different from saying, a person is chemically deficient or imbalanced and therefore they "need" an antidepressant. Chemicals have been measured to be different in people who are depressed from those who are not. They just don't know what's a normal range is for for each individual.

Not true. At least not in recognized medical studies
ethicomm (8 лет назад)
If I failed to take my antidepressants for 3 or 4 days I usually got what I'd call brain flutters and flu-like symptoms. I recently tapered myself off of Wellbutrin and Effexor due to the $85 a month costs. So far the only thing I've noticed is being more impatient in traffic plus I had a few down days. Generally speaking it should be possible to stop your antidepressants but I'd think it's best to talk to your doctor first (unlike me). Good luck to those looking to try stopping.
franksherry (8 лет назад)
caketheory, Depression has very real biological chemical reactions in the body. We only are now, beginning to test hormones (eg. seratonin levels) and chemical levels in the body that influence how a person "feels". I'm not saying I am pro antidepressant meds, because I feel there are many ways we can influence how we feel in more natural/alternative ways first. However, there is certainly a place for meds in severe cases until we understand more biologically how depression happens.
Linda Diane (8 месяцев назад)
the medications are given based on theories, not on medical evidence. Any time a medication is given, it is a broad crapshoot.
franksherry (8 лет назад)
The truth is that this advice about not stopping "cold turkey" antidepressant meds is excellent advice. I have experienced this first hand & have to equate the "muscle tightness" to feeling as though my own muscles wanted to "break my bones"! It was horrible & took many weeks of physical therapy to help relax the muscles & reduce the pain. As far as the study that showed antidepressants being no better than a placebo, that was referring to mild to mod cases of depression (not severe cases).
Psychiatry Capitalist Fraud (9 лет назад)
Yes I have and I've had severe mental illness myself. Infact my illness was so severe I was actually given psychosurgery which is only given as an absolute last resort.
Psychiatry Capitalist Fraud (9 лет назад)
This video is a LIE. Depression should not be compared to "diabetes" because diabetes is a real disease which can be diagnosed by a biological test. Nobody is given a medical test to prove your depression so its not fair to compare the 2 in this way. Also Prof Irving Kirsch from the University of Hull did an extensive clinical trial and concluded that antidepressants are no better than Placebo. Next you'll be saying ECT treatment is of benefit and then where do you draw the line?
