Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a dissociative with a more complex pharmacology than ketamine and PCP. In medicine it's been used for cough, pain, pseudobulbar affect, and a variety of other conditions. It's also a fairly common recreational drug.

The Drug Classroom (TDC) is dedicated to providing the type of drug education everyone should have. Drugs are never going to leave our society and there has never been a society free from drugs.
Therefore, it only makes sense to provide real education free from propaganda.
TDC doesn't advocate drug use. Rather, we operate with the intention of reducing the harm some substances can bring.
Feel free to ask questions!
What a great video. Wasn't expecting to watch the entire thing. I am a bit older and have been clean from everything for nearly 20 years now, but did my fair share of whatever in my mid-to-late teens, early 20s and I have to say DXM was my favorite because it was just so...different than everything else. This was in the mid-90s, so options were limited to the non-Guaifenesin containing Robitussin Max which was terrible to take, but did the trick. If I were to guess, we usually hovered around P2-3 which was good enough. One time I was given the infamous powder and that was the last time I ever did it in any form. It was quite unpleasant and not really like the Robitussin. I couldn't move for hours and it had significant stomach pain/nausea the whole time. Never got that with the syrup except for maybe an hour after drinking the stuff, which was primarily just related to how terrible it tasted. Makes me shudder to this day thinking about it.
So right away I have to disagree with the increased blood pressure. I've been taking DXM for a while now. It always "seemed" to me that it _must_ increase blood pressure. So once when taking an extremely high dose (around 1.5 grams), I had a cuff ready and took my blood pressure. I was surprised to find that my blood pressure was actually quite normal.
+The Drug Classroom Really? I'd love to see a source for this study where they gave people huge doses of dextromethorphan and then measured their blood pressure. Or, more likely, do you mean they did this to rats and are extrapolating from a per weight basis?
If you decide to do it and I recommend you don't. But if you do DO NOT get it from anything with any other any drugs/medicine mixed in, cuz Tylenol in nyqul for example will eat your liver. get it pure
your gunna kill mofos showing those flu meds, they would kill you if you tried to get high on them. some idiot is going to be like "those must be what people use to get high" and ttake the whole bottle and die from the other chemicals in it.
I've been doing dxm for 5 years. Still using. Smoking weed makes it stronger and better high. Tabacco too. Kicks in faster. That's just me don't know for anybody else. Everybody different. I started on codeine then couldn't get my hands on it anymore. So went to dxm.
I remember hitting my first 4th plateau back in my 20's. Hell of an experience. Disassociation is a hell of a ride.
Without a doubt, quite controllably, I had the ability to move my soul, or awareness, out of my body.
I ODed by taking a whole bottle of Robo then ate some fatty gmo food which lead to serotonin syndrome and Rhabdomylesis. I went to the hospital, had a stupid ass doctor not diagnose me with serotonin syndrome which made me have delirium for over 5 days until my regular doctor prescribed it for me which was the antidote for oxidative stress.
Now it’s been over 60 days and I still feel delusional thanks to stupid ass poison control and that Dr. I know it was stupid of me to try this, but in the video the study suggests that plateau 3 doesn’t cause death.
I feel like terrible depression still because how neurotoxic it is. The more potent a drug is, the more neurotoxic it is like MDA, Meth, Weed, DXM, Ketamine, etc. Excluding LSD because LSD isn’t indigenous in the human body
I recommend you get the lowest lasting DXM brand no XRs. Because you don’t want to be tripping on it for 5 days because no doctor in the ER knows wtf cyproheptidine is used for.
My first experience with dxm was a few nights ago. At first I drank half the bottle and felt absolutely nothing after 2 hours so even tho I knew it wasn't a good idea I drank the rest and waited. This was supposedly enough dxm all together to get me well into plateau 2. An hour after waiting I started to have an intense urge to itch myself so I and the more I itches the worse it got, I ended up a drawing a minor amount of blood and left cuts on my back from the amount of scratching I did. Eventually after the scratching had stopped I sat down at my computer to see if any other effects would take hold. I waited for about an hour and felt absolutely nothing, completely sober in the mind but as soon as I stood up my movement felt almost like I was on alcohol but still no real noticeable difference in my perception no disassociation no patterns nothing but an itchy back and a staggered walk.
This is my story about DXM, I know its kinda long but its interesting and if u read it all, thank u
I'm 13 and ive only done dxm once which was about a month ago, I had a full bottle of cough dm, which is a stronger cough syrup, I read the bottle, because I wanted to try dxm, and right on the front it said DXM, or the other long scientific word, I looked around on the bottle for anything else and I saw it said 89FL, then I saw it said 30 mg of DXM, per tablespoon, now I didnt relize how much dxm that was in the whole bottle, and I was dumb and didnt feel like reasreching how to dose dxm to get fucked up, so my dumbass though, well i dont know how much it takes to get me high, and I dont wanna risk not getting high, so I said fuck it and drank the whole bottle in 10 minutes, this was late at night, and I was already kind of tired, so after that I wasn't feeling anything after 30 minutes and I thought, well that's some bulshit, so I went to bed. When I woke up the next morning, let me tell ya, I was FUCKED UP. I didint realize I woke up, until 5 minutes after I woke up, I went to the bathroom wobbling around hit my shoulder on the wall looked in the mirror and my pupiles were so big, the actual color of my eyes were gone, I couldnt see them. I was freaking out, I went to my room and laid there, in my bed, shaking for literally the whole day until I came down, I was swearing over and over and over again I would never do it again.
DXM helped me get over my fear of vomiting. Otherwise it's not anywhere near as good as other disassociates, or even other psychedelics, and should be used with caution. Something about the trip was very addictive to me, I felt a compulsive urge to keep getting more. It's also a good drug for explaining the concept of micro dosing psychedelics(30mg of DXM helps with coughs, 300mg can cause a trip. 20mics of LSD can help with depression while 100mics will cause a trip. It's the dosage that matters, and banning a substance because of it's abuse potential is absolutely unscientific and immoral.)
Be safe, keep a bucket nearby, and don't get caught in the portal
I remember hitting my first 4th plateau back in my 20's. Hell of an experience. Disassociation is a hell of a ride.
Without a doubt, quite controllably, I had the ability to move my soul, or awareness, out of my body. The visuals were amazing too
Much more enjoyable then LSD as far as I am concerned
I took DXM about 10 times in my youth, always middose.
Sometimes it was very inhibition lowering (I did pretty stupid things in public), one time I was absolutely sure, that I was dying. I didn't care about it though, I just thought "shit, now there will be newspaper articles about a teenager dying from DXM, it'll get banned because of me".
After I puked two or three times I layed on my bed & the trip went very well, I thought I layed outside on the gras at a GOA festival (I heard techno music).
The last two times I took DXM the side effects were pretty bad, I was extremely nauseus at the comeup & I always puked more than one time.
A very strange & not very pleasant drug most of the time.
This shit is super fucking awesome and extremely psychoactive feeling. I remember laying my bed on 1500mg. Watching my room go from a square into a circle. Watching my celling turn into a checker board and geometric patters rippiling through everything. I developed a dependency to DXM. Be careful. It's not addictive unless you're careless.
+jbuddyman I have a very strong stomach for most substances. The main problem I have drinking cough syrup, is the slimey sugar coated menthol taste that sits at the back of my throat the entire time. Gel caps might be an alright alternative, if it isn't as gross feeling as the syrup. I'll most likely just order the powder, mix it up in a shot glass with water, and take it in one go.
Yeah, just about everytime I'd 3rd plateau, I would be in front of the toilet puking and feeling gross for the entire trip. This was with syrup with no other medical ingredients. I wanna try pure DXM powder and see what it's like.
+The Drug Classroom that's the only thing I meant. I know what you're saying, and I agree ; famous opioids with completely different structure are methadone, dextromoramide, dextropropoxiphene, etc. I didn't know about the two types of classification.
*Seth said the DXM had a minor impact on heroin withdrawal, and the article in the slide mentions the combination with clonidine. I think that DXM can help people who want to self-care get off opioids. I think it can definitely augment kratom but that the two together can't just be dosed recklessly. There are inevitable side effects like low blood sugar, vomiting, sweating, palpitations, anxiety...etc. That's kratom's stimulating side mixed with DXM's panicking side.
I've used the two together on many occasions and I have to caution against piling it on. Kratom's mitragynine inhibits crucial CYP enzymes and prolongs the QT interval (like several common pharmaceuticals). Kratom has an antidiabetic effect and DXM does as well. What that means for sensitive individuals is that hypoglycemia is likely, then an exaggerated insulin response to the re-sugaring like eating candy. If you smoke pot on top of this or pop an aspirin (because this combination gives me like-migraines), or if you have all those drugs in your system, you're at risk for 6-12 hours of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) with an exaggerated insulin response. There's so much anti-diabetic stuff going on with this combination adding in the pot and/or aspirin that white-outs, fainting, profuse sweating, paleness, anxiety, confusion, weakness, losing all the color in your skin are a very real possibility. Kratom alone can cause hypoglycemia. When you toss back a bottle of syrup, you load your body full of sugars and the drugs will cause an exaggerated insulin response which could be very hazardous.
I will add though that mitragyinine is an alpha-2 agonist like clonidine or CBG from cannabis, and this is an antihypertensive, sedative mechanism, which could reduce anxiety and hypertension.
Unfortunately, exceedingly high doses of high-potency stimulating kratom are linked to hypertension and tachycardia.
The alpha 2 agonist class of drugs includes agents like clonidine which work fantastically but have an inevitable hazardous rebound hypertensive response when stopping suddenly. They reportedly prevent DXM neurotoxicity and enhance DXM's positive impact on opioid withdrawal, as clonidine and lofexidine and tizanidine (all alpha 2 agonists) are used for opioid withdrawal albeit with some perceptable sedation but no notable euphoria. Combining with DXM and a benzodiazepine and clonidine, was as Seth said in the video
which means that for anyone who's reading, take note that my best friend quit heroin (he was spending at least forty bucks a day) taking DXM 3 days in a row with clonidine and kratom *(despite the hazards involved which manifest much more easily in someone who's already physically ill)*. His doses were 300 and 450mg DXM, 0.3mg clonidine, and 8g kratom (red bali, and that's a lot for uncharted territory).
He would go on to use DXM with LSD (or 1p-, al-lad, etc) and smaller amounts of kratom and more clonidine together and experience a state reminiscent of ibogaine. He would recall memories before he started using, having existential self-realizations, having vivid imagination, and tripping his fucking balls off.
It is very dangerous to combine DXM with pharmaceuticals when you don't know what the net effect is. Sure, we're cautioned to avoid SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, TCAs, cocaine, amphetamines, designer psychedelics, tramadol, etc...but the list is never long enough. Avoid 5htp. Avoid kanna.
A lot of this cautioning comes from just how extremely intense everything is on DXM. It is all in your head. And to be panicked about dying due to a drug combination is self-sabotage. DXM can seemingly turn distress into eustress, or eustress into distress. At high doses anything is possible, anything is believable. I think that may be very profound to someone to have the experience where they're the most susceptible to delusions
That sole fatality blamed on kratom which occurred in the US...the man also had Celexa (citalopram, an SSRI antidepressant) in his system and that drug hazardously prolongs the QT interval in the heartbeat.
Ibogaine, benadryl, claritin, zofran, methadone, many antipsychotics and antidepressants, Quinidine, etc...all prolong the QT interval, and Long QT syndrome is a genetic condition that might not manifest until adulthood when an offending drug is introduced. It makes people faint and go into a more severe arrythmia leading to cardiac arrest.
DXM causes tachycardia and hypertension. A very fast heartbeat+a significantly prolonged QT interval=potential emergency.
The hypertensive effect of DXM is much slower to resolve with breathing exercises and calming techniques versus sober. Many heart medications and others raise the heart rate, that would include nitroglycerin which would be given for chest pain associated with CAS/MI. This synergy of tachycardia isn't something you should be putting your body through.
I think that all people who have common medical problems like hypertension need to stock up on the safest antihypertensives. Clonidine can both reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure. Certain beta blockers will do, but probably not propranolol or timolol or sotalol. Nifedipine raises the heart rate too much. Alpha blockers do as well but are more useful for quickly terminating hypertension. ACE inhibitors can cause a cough and too low blood pressure but have far less severe side effects than other classes. Angiotensin II receptor blockers like losartan also. The last two classes of drugs raise potassium and asthma inhalers and epi-pens lower it. Increasing dietary (but not supplementing) potassium may be a way around the QT interval problems since that originates from a drug blocking a potassium channel.
This is unlikely to happen on kratom. DXM itself doesn't as significantly as the other drugs, prolong the QT interval.
Kratom might be a bit safer as a comedown tool for mushrooms or other traditional psychedelics since it antagonizes them.
But traditional psychedelics also increase blood pressure and pulse.
It really comes down to whether you use common doses of kratom or very high doses, if you're using a red/gold vs a green/white kratom. A bali vs a malay vs a maeng da. I say only use a red bali. I also say kratom is more of a medication than DXM is after all these experiences.
I used to do 720mg as a base dose all the time and my favorite thing to do was stand up close my eyes and look down and then I could near perfectly see my legs moving with my eyes closed that sure was fun
4:48 - 6:02 you really summed up my bad trip, I've been looking for an explanation and this is completely sufficient. no matter how much I breathed I couldn't "get" oxygen, I thought my room was the only one in the world and I was trapped there forever, and I was convinced I was dying. I was literally screaming and I couldn't control it, so much impending doom.
Many years ago I had a number of experiences with this... I found that sitting in a pitch dark room while I was in the experience led to extremely life like imagery mixed with kaleidoscopic-esque structures such as gears. Two reasons I would not recommend this substance is that it has a narcotic quality and if the user abuses it they will experience significant impairment with levels of functioning even the days or weeks after. The second reason I don't recommend it is that, while this substance did have some sort of insights, they were almost always delusions. If you use this substance frequently, you will become delusional. The visuals were very memorable though but there wasn't the psychedelic aspect in that the visuals weren't interacting with me on a emotional level. From what I remember DXM is a pretty emotionless substance. I feel like I have had a different experience than most people though because from the handful of experiences I had with it sitting in a dark room, it was the most visual substance I have ever taken, but I am telling you not to. It isn't worth how far it takes you away from yourself. The visuals in my experience were definitely open-eyed and complex.
2nd plateau is the most uncomfortable/anxious level imo; whenever I reach 3rd I tend to have vivid CEVs and also astral project, and I get taken to some fascinating places. 2nd plateau makes me feel like I'm trapped in a box within a room that's expanded to like 20 times its normal area, and I'm constantly being watched or approached by people whom I do not want to know I'm high. All of my best experiences on DXM have been at 3rd plat doses.
Did this stuff for yrs straight, sometimes id go for a few months daily without a days rest. Been sober for 3yrs now, still feel the effects of daily abuse. Vision twitches, memory loss which is insanely similar to being on dxm although i am sober. Lost my job, gf and pushed all my family away due to abuse. It starts off like fun, you may think you can just do it every now n then but just like any other addiction this shit gets a hold of you too quickly. Please, for your sake or familys sake dont and il say it again.. DONT TOUCH DXM.
I'm sorry to hear about the negative effects you've encountered. Though I do think the appropriate warning has more to do with recommending people not abuse the substance, not that they never take it, as simply taking it won't produce the same issues and indeed many people use the drug without forming a psychological dependence on it.
Not to mention i also now break out in hives nearly every 2nd day which is extremely annoying and is sometimes even worse than robo itch. To the point my hands, feet, legs and whole body go bright red and swell like a motherfucker. To thr point i actually feel like there are bugs under my skin.
Try to breathe slowly and relax. Sophomore year of highschool or even college life hasn't even begun yet. You realize there's a problem when there is still time to do something about it. You haven't ruined anything that can't be repaired.
Recently I tried a higher dose with dxm. At first I felt stones but then felt panic and threw up. I experienced insane auditory hallucinations. When my brother was talking to me I would hear the repeating if a sound several times in a second almost like an echo.
I had a friend take 112 tripple C's. That equals 3,360 mg of DXM. He had a seizure but made it out okay. He's now passed from an unrelated situation. But I couldn't imagine the experience he had. Most I've ever taken waa 960 mg
Bahahahahaaa he had a fucking great time. I took 720 mg dose then once it hit I took two full handfuls of triple cs n downed them. Was in the ICU for 3 days but it was definitely fucking worth it lmfaoooo bless the man
DXM literally changed my life from the second it hit me the first time. I believed I had died and was a new creature- a literal resurrection. I started believing all kinds of crazy shit like I was a prophet. It took it like a year to fully wear off and to this day I still have light episodes of crazy thinking 💭
I reached plateau sigma my freshman year of college I probably consumed around 2000-2500mg of this shit within a week. With constant small to large redoses. Shit was crazy. Here I am almost a year later stuck in this depersonalized trance I cannot get out of. Shits weird I feel like I am the only person who's truly here. For a month after the trip I kept thinking that what I was seeing was really just my imagination and I was actually in a coma. Shits crazy man. It'll fuck you up. It'll fuck you up good. Don't do this shit. If you really want to know what it feels like just go to Reddit and read others experiences.
Bruh I took exactly 100 mg from a delsylm bottle, waited, didn’t work. Took a full cup (about 20 ml or 120 I think) waited, didn’t work. I’m too scared too take more. Do I have some sort of genetic trait that can handle substances better (this is my first time ever taking it)?
The first time I took DXM(Triple C’s) I took 6 pills and it was great. It was to the point where it clicked and I knew what I was doing and I having a extremely time doing it. I laid back in my bed and my whole body went numb and it felt amazing. I had my friend who smoked weed before as a trip sitter in case anything happened. I’m not addicted to it, but I would recommend taking a small dose of it and it feels great.
I have severe OCD and depression, ssri's, Antipsychs, Benzodiazepine never worked for me. I once tried 60 mg of DXM but it did not affect me and i'm thinking of trying it again upping the dose a little to see if it could help with my intrusive thoughts.
the only time I do Dex is when I have pot on me. It enhances the trip 10 fold🤩. This drug can be very addicting if you fall in love w/ the feeling. Definitely my favorite thing to do is produce music while I’m zoned . Time seems to not exist. I also like going to the gym on DXM. Drive around smoking a blunt, while tripping is amazing, but dangerous!! xD. Overall this drug is bliss. Definitely a must try w/ weed. But becareful. I usually feel somewhat down the next day or two after doing it & it makes me want to trip again to uplift my mood. jus don’t become addicted & you’ll be good.
DXM is so lame! Ugh I got stuck in the loop of robotrippin for a spell lol it was not fun had the flu and wss like fuck it even tho it didn't help it makes u care a lil less about being sick but yuck I hate how it feels especially when they mix it in to cut mdma smh wtf jyst no no don't
I have a buddy who became seriously addicted to this shit. It ruined him; his body, his mind and his spirit are forever tarnished because of the massive amounts of DXM he ingested. I'm talking well over one hundred gallons or more.. Years and years of hopeless abuse has most likely riddled his brain with lesions, as he just isn't the same person anymore. It's sad because I miss him, the old him, the kid that was so clever, funnyand full of life has been diminished to a brain damaged husk of a man.. I'd like to think that if he could stay sober long enough, that the old him would come back, but I know that's probably just a pipe dream.. .
¨fuck what they say. DXM is number 1 ingredience in this world. HEll i did 1000mgs, 800mgs,600,... hundreds and hundreds of dxm trips i had. I already finished but the times it was just psychedelic multidimensional meltdown. Sometimes i even felt like being acid myself :D
I've taken 1700mgs of delsym and smoked a bowl and I've never had anything more intense than a plateua 2 or 3 by what this guy says. I only dissociate and listen to music. I just float around in my mind and that's it. Maybe a slight OBE
I'm around 110 kg and took 900mg and had a complete out of body experience, as if my mind and body were traveling to other dimensions while I was an observer sitting inside my head. I was completely dissociated and detatched from my body. I remember having voices in my head telling me to kill myself to end my nightmare experience while I watched the clock stand still. The time literally stayed at 10:15PM for hours. Set and setting is VERY important with this drug.
Last thing I remember from my last DXM "trip", I drank the bottle, puked, had a good time smoking some weed and BAM anxiety attack. Everything was flat (stairs were a challenge) lots of confusion. And felt like I was dying and not myself at all. DONT DO IT MAN JUST WAIT AND FIND SOME MUSHIES OR CID
I took 1200-1400mg one time, I would always take these boxes of the pills. They had guaf in them but it didn't typically make me nauseous so I was fine with it. Honestly I don't remember much of the experience expect for watching trippy videos and just being so stupidly out of it that I couldn't even talk, I would slur every word that came out of my mouth. I was with some friends and we watched the music video for Cartoons and Cereal by Kendrick. That shit is so nostalgic now lmao.
Edit: I just remembered some funny shit, one of my homies thought he heard my brother wake up, so for like 20 minutes straight he kept going "shhhhhh" without any explanation. He was in another fucking world.
I would add...As with ALL drugs, it greatly depends on other chems already in your system. This includes food, vitamins, minerals that WILL react (good or bad) or change the chemical makeup hence the different experiences. Do your Research !!!
It's a primary intended effect of recreational use, which is what "positive" means in this case. But like with many of the core aspects of hallucinogens, dissociation can sometimes be a negative, which is why I mention the importance of individual differences.
DXMs stimulating at around doses of 400 MG. 700 MG is when its sedating. I use to take a bottle and a couple adderalls and go mountain biking. It helped me excsersize. I lost a lot of weight quickly. I looked great.
Dude, please avoid combining stimulants at all with DXM. Caffeine MAYBE is okay but adderall is a no.
Adderall causes neurotransmitters to dump from the synapses whereas DXM prevents them from leaving the area. It causes overstimulation all over the body. It's dangerous on most of your organ systems to take these together due to the hypertension and tachycardia.
Even taking DXM two days after the last dose of adderall could be a very negative experience.
I took DXM a day after taking a dexedrine, and smoked weed during the experience. I was late on a dose of my blood pressure pills. I had extremely intense chest pain and a panic attack. It lasted for 3 hours until I took extra clonidine and benzos. I didn't want to end up in the hospital because my brother was in town for the first time in a year and was leaving the next day. I had an EKG done two days later and the findings enabled my doctor to tell me that I probably had a heart attack and I have a cardiac stress test next week. I'm in my 20s, not in my fifties like my late father who had a stress test a week before he died.
In other words, please be careful man.
Antidepressants are medications that can help relieve symptoms of depression, social anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders, seasonal affective disorder, and dysthymia, or mild chronic depression, as well as other conditions.
They aim to correct chemical imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to be responsible for changes in mood and behavior.
Depression Medications (Antidepressants)
These are the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressant.
Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are used to treat major depression, mood disorders, and possibly but less commonly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, menopausal symptoms, fibromyalgia, and chronic neuropathic pain.
SNRIs raise levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters in the brain that play a key role in stabilizing mood.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. They are effective in treating depression, and they have fewer side effects than the other antidepressants.
SSRIs block the reuptake, or absorption, of serotonin in the brain. This makes it easier for the brain cells to receive and send messages, resulting in better and more stable moods.
They are called "selective" because they mainly seem to affect serotonin, and not the other neurotransmitters.
