Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: http://bit.ly/1FAg8hB
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
I have been personally damaged and insulted, in the legal sense, by psychologists, and have always been disgusted at their ignorance, arrogance and supposition. I will NEVER allow them near me again. This talk heartened me, as it is so uplifting and hopeful. Psychologists are, in my experience, the witch doctors of our age, earning a dishonest and criminally damaging living by guesswork and predictions based on projections of their own personalities and flawed statistical studies unrelated to their specific patients. I would rather trust the predictions of an uncivilized witch doctor who determines future outcomes by examining the entrails of small animals than these psychopaths. Come to think of it, the two processes are essentially the same.......examine a mess, and invent the rest.
The future lies in neuroscience. The answer to our perils, including climate change, lie in neuroscience. When desperation and inefficiencies are diminished we start to care a whole lot more in general.
I would like to make a suggestion I am so glad for the wisdom displayed on this video in support of helping others. I think you may also consider as we see Islamic peoples coming here as they did in Europe. America is one of the few places there are laws to protect off springs of families in the matter of relatives not mixing. Many of these places there are no such rules. Men marrying 6 year old girls. I am not suggesting hate or anger etc.. I m suggesting perhaps there are ways you could help these people also. We are all made in Gods image. Please consider the importance of my suggestions. There are many disasters coming unless people seek alternatives to mass killings. please?
i have had numerous concussions and head injuries all before I was 20.. i’m currently 38 and definitely suffer from OCD, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. I have a great family and make a great living.. Mental illness and happiness do not go hand
Guys, this person is just another salesman: what "magic" do you suspect his program consists of? Why wouldn't everyone in medicine around the world be using it. Stop distrusting every authority- it makes it simple for people like this man to take advantage of you. The trutj is: our knowledge of the brain is too limited to sensibly use brain scan technology. It does not help us in treating patients yet in a relevant manner. Wish you all the best and please be aware that usually there aren't simple answers in medicibe and IF there were then companies would be all over it (as is the case for so called biologicals e.g.)
This could so help my child who was knocked down by a car as teenager and has severe brain trauma which includes a personality shift and motor disability . The out workings in their life has been horrible to watch and there has seemed there is nothing I could do to change this other than being supportive :-(
This was a wonderful speech and shows another way of looking at mental and social problems. However, this Ted Talk really feels less like a completed study and more like an ad. Particularly near the end, where he tells us that an "intense brain program" improved Nancy and others, but does not mention what they did exactly. Sounds more like, "hey, we've been looking at this issue in a completely wrong way, come to our clinic to find out more."
It's worth doing more than just brain scans. There are blood tests etc that are quite important. EG many with Asperger's or Autism (and no they are not the same thing even if DSM-5 says they are) have issues with the CYP 2D6 gene not expressing Cytochrome p450 2D6 amongst other issues. There is also a well documented issue with the tryptofan metabolism which leads to reduced levels of serotonin and melatonin. There are also potential issues with vasopressin and oxytocin (both are part of the mechanisms that make social memory work). That's just a few things that can affect the brain that will not show on a scan but will show on a blood test.
If the majority population are "high IQ" individuals, why would there be a discussion regarding the functioning (or lack thereof) of the brain/mind! The abundance of lies are coming out of the woodwork's these days!!!
How can you improve the morphology of the brain? This is serious in it's implications. I need to know. If this remains true, then how costly is this? It must be terribly expensive. Why is it that the media has not encompassed this like the Holy Grail?
Vitamin deficiency is a huge factor in depression, anxiety and pain among other diagnosis.
No one wants to discuss this.
Our food is so loaded with supplements and chemicals that we aren't absorbing critical micro nutrients and actual nutrients from food.
Anyone who has delved into B12 deficiency beyond your basic Google search knows this.
It's a domino effect for every nutrient and cell in our body .
It wrecks havoc on our central nervous system.
Displaying itself in multitude of symptoms. Anxiety, depression, mood changes. Arthritis, dementia, and even heart disease, and or attacks.
The whole RNA synthesis is disrupted in effect short changing our DNA.
Cells unable to replicate are destined for failure.
You don't need to be a doctor to understand this information.
You only must be willing to educate yourself.
While anxiety is a real problem, it's not in your head. The doctor will prescribed a powerful addictive drug setting you up for failure. Never addressing nutritional deficiencies.
Look around at the people you know. Everyone has a diagnosis. We are a sick Nation. Very few ask why?
This is common sense. Thinking about a problem outside a mainstream textbook. Mental health has been guessed to treat for centuries. Psychiatry just uses the study of pharmacology to medicate behavior. This medication either increases or decreases the activity of your neurotransmitters. Problem is the brain and behavior can be for more complex. Neuroimaging studies the functioning of your brain. So spect, pet, and Fmri can be used but usually just for research studies. Much cheaper to just observe and medicate and more profitable. But using neuroimaging to diagnose mental health problems is the next step towards accuracy. But observation and bullshiting sells meds.
This is amazing work! I have a TBI and have suffered from severe emotional issues since (cutting, multiple attempted suicides, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, anxiety, insomnia, etc.). While put on a boat-load of meds, nothing helps/helped. I'm talking to my neuropsychologist soon and bringing up these findings. I am hopeful for my recovery: thank you much!
This clown is a total fraud. Just take five minutes and do a Google search for Dr.Amen critics to get the other side of the coin. None of what he purports has any scientific validity. Basically he is a snake oil salesman.
I'm not sure I agree about the dementia. Everyone's experience is different. I think anything caught early has a better chance of helping but these SPECT scans are expensive and not covered by insurance. JMO I'm no doctor.
It's very rare to see an intelligent view on psychology. Hopefully he can inspire some changes to the ridiculous psuedo-scientific practices we now know as "therapy", which was sadly solidified through the marriage of psychology-and-state.
However, I'm pretty skeptical of his claims about the scan itself. The field is inflexible and archaic, but it cannot ignore wonder solutions. Quite likely this is also psuedo-scientific, as is the norm in social "sciences".
Playing chemistry with the brain is not possibly but rather probably going to end in disaster, for someone. There're reasons these technologies that'd probably result in fewer repeat criminal offenses and incarceration. Corrections is a multi-billion $ industry in the US. Factor in the police, attorneys, prosecutors, probation officers ect ect and how many dollars are we really talking about ? The land of the FREE ! Yet we incarcerate more people per capita, under some of the very worst conditions and it's all about making a few very wealthy. You can analyze every aspect of modern life and somehow someone is making huge sums of money. So it's inspiring to see these advancements in science and exciting to imagine how these advancements could improve society. Yet the reality remains that anything that threatens the profits of the few will not be tolerated.
"there is a treatment" I have had so many mental illnesses my entire life. after watching this at school, i went into the bathroom and cried. that simple phrase gives me so much joy. brains can be healed, not just stuffed full of medicine as a temporary solution.
Not sure why anyone would argue against what this doctor is suggesting. I'm trying to think maybe the other sides argument has a good point. But I can't think of any good enough reason not to use bran scans to fix ourselves and people we care about.
Not at all what I'd expect TED to stand behind -- almost seems like a glorified puppet being fueled by either Amphetamine drug makers, or the newer age 'smart drug' markets. Either way, wtf is with the before / after brain scans he showed? I'm not even an MD and I can read a cross-section better than that.
Preparing for change: 5 key steps to addiction recovery
Remind yourself of the reasons you want to change.
Think about your past attempts at recovery, if any. What worked? What didn’t?
Set specific, measurable goals, such as a start date or limits on your drug use.
Remove reminders of your addiction from your home, workplace, and other places you frequent.
Tell friends and family that you’re committing to recovery, and ask for their support.

TED is weird. So many like this one are little more than an glorified infomercial. Also, how heavily are they coached? There is a cadence and tone that all Ted talks have. Come to think it, have I ever enjoyed a TED talk?
Contacted his office years ago to ask questions. I like the idea that we need to look at and fix brains, but I do question the way his SPECT images are being used. SPECT measures cerebral blood, which changes significantly in any given brain over time. If you took four scans in a row, once every hour for 24 hours, would you get a consistent image of any single brain, or would you rather see that any one brain can, in a single day, have most of the different SPECT images he shows in these slides, based on what the person/brain is doing? In other words, my guess is that the "whole" looking brain will also look full of holes if you sample it at different times. If he published his data, this could be determined.
I want to believe, but to my knowledge, even after irradiating 83,000 brains, Dr. Amen has not ever been able to take a SPECT scan and tell anything from it directly without an interview of the patient about his/her problems. To me, this shows that the SPECT scans lack any diagnostic value, even for before and after scans. A SPECT is just a brief snapshot of what the dynamic brain is doing. These brain images may, however, due to people's faith in them and in Dr. Amen's credibility, greatly increase the placebo effect, resulting in real brain changes from self healing.
I was beaten and abused in everyway possible as a child. Not only by my parents but my community as well. I was hit in the head more times than I could count. I wonder what kind of therapy would alleviate a troubled mind such as this?
The NFL is suppressing even more recent data that is coming out about concussion and brain injury. We stopped watching not because they kneel but because the corporation doesn't care about the health of its players.
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to uncover 3 benefits of meditation try Reflective Folio Fixer (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my co-worker got excellent success with it.
Antidepressants are medications that can help relieve symptoms of depression, social anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders, seasonal affective disorder, and dysthymia, or mild chronic depression, as well as other conditions.
They aim to correct chemical imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to be responsible for changes in mood and behavior.
Depression Medications (Antidepressants)
These are the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressant.
Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are used to treat major depression, mood disorders, and possibly but less commonly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, menopausal symptoms, fibromyalgia, and chronic neuropathic pain.
SNRIs raise levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters in the brain that play a key role in stabilizing mood.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. They are effective in treating depression, and they have fewer side effects than the other antidepressants.
SSRIs block the reuptake, or absorption, of serotonin in the brain. This makes it easier for the brain cells to receive and send messages, resulting in better and more stable moods.
They are called "selective" because they mainly seem to affect serotonin, and not the other neurotransmitters.
