In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Word of caution. Interesting? very. But, Dr. Amen makes claims not yet proven clinically valid by neuroscience research and peer review. In fact, he mixes expensive neuroradiologic technology (SPEC scans) with mysticism when he describes SPECT scans as a "window into the hardware of the soul." He prescribes brain supplements (dietary supplements) as efficacious, which are anecdotal at best. His consultations and SPECT scans are expensive (~$5,000), which are not covered by medical insurance. Finally, his clinical findings (diagnosis) are not admissible in a court of law under Frye's Rule of Evidence and the Daubert factors. Put simply, he's a convincing salesman to the unwary.
I asked both my psych and PCP for a brain scan after watching thinks months ago , and I've asked and asked . They and most Doctors do not want to do it , they want to give a bunch of meds like candy that are basically poison. It's a set scan correct ? I'll look elsewhere
Key ideas (spoiler alert): 1. Same behavioral problems/outside symptoms can have different causes. 2. Brain scan, at least according to the speaker, can identify the core of the problem, i.e., the brain area that's not functioning properly. 3. Treatment specially designed for the dysfunctional brain can be way better than traditional psychiatric treatment.
Thank You, Dr. Daniel Amen ... for your courage to stick with this research in the face of discouragement ... and for doing this talk and bringing this video here. This was posted 5 years ago ... I'm really interested in knowing of any progress and will look for more recent information. I agree with you fully that when we can look we need to ... you don't mention it here but I know that one of the main factors that prevent people from looking is the cost ... I wish you might have at least mentioned that but perhaps it would have taken time from the most important aspect ... this needs to be happening (looking, when we can to see if it is a brain thing and then fixing that when possible. Love & Peace to All
Alzheimer’s starts in the brain 30-50 years before you have any symptoms ... I knew it ! Psychiatristsbdont look at the brain the very organ they are treating !!! Here in the UK brain imaging is not used.
The militarys blow up millions in missiles and bombs every day. How many brain scan machines is this? Vets with PTSD need this bad. FMRIs have been shown to improve the brain using new technics. NO, let's go build billion dollar bombers first.
Brain damage due to "drug abuse."??? Uhh... Vague much?? Which drugs? How much? How long or duration?? NOT all drugs, in general, even when abused, do NOT cause any kind of brain damage. One of the most addictive and commonly abused narcotics is oxycodone hydrochloride. I'm talking about the generic Instant Release, NOT other formulations like OxyContin, the abuse deterrent, Extended Release tablets or Percocet, which is basically just Oxycodone IR but with added Acetaminophen (Tylenol). And when upon reviewing MULTIPLE medical research reports specifically pertaining to the pharmacology of pure Oxycodone hydrochloride, such clinical medical tests and research had essentially concluded that pure Oxycodone hydrochloride IR had very little to ZERO negative or ill-affects on the human body. The drug was extremely effective in it's primary function and also repeatedly proved to be clinically safe in medically prescribed appropriated doses; essentially having a stable pharmacological medication that was not only extremely effective, but also confidently fairly harmless to human biology.
It's so obvious now. I mean - we have physically damaged brains and no one sees it and then we can't do some task and we don't know that physically a part of our brain is damaged. It's like our leg is broken and we don't notice that's the reason we can't run.
He is a very caring doctor. Nice man. There are many paths to better quality of life.
My story is that I suffered a concussion that killed me. Dead on a dock. Out of body, NDE, yatah yatah. Five and a half years tumultuous years later I began treatment with a highly skilled woman who specializes in
cranial sacral massage therapy. The concussion changed me completely. There are many paths to better quality of life. This treatment method gave me my life back. Consider researching it.
In relation of drugs... Does LSD, DMT or Psylocibine deteriorate our brains??? I Just think, the potencial of these drugs looks like to enhance our brain activity. Discussing about users of drugs, because we can't blindfold ourselves
Sandy Hook was a hoax but stating that would be extremely bad for business. A celebrity doctor is dependent on the mainstream media for his fabulous wealth. Best to just go along with the hoax, right? Right. Repeat the lie? Yes. Further weave it into the fabric of "reality?" For sure.
Just so sad that in my country the doctors refuse to request a brain scan for depression, OCD etc..
They say that unless it is an emergency life threatening case, like for instance a stroke no brain scans are allowed.
They claim Google brain scans cases are only for research to 'teach'' psychiatrists.
So dark ages here. Actually cruel and inhumane in my opinion.
That gave me much understanding to my behaviour ,as got in to so confuse as the people around me not able to understand what I am doing and when I ask them to what is that I have said or do wrong even they could not have the answers. Except the fact that it's wrong.
The one thing that always work in this state of mind is exercise, get swety, struggle for breath.
Maybe instead of sending people to war and then trying to rebuild those brain better stop the war fight and hate?? Maybe is better to remove a bad staff like drags and alcohol?? Maybe it’s a better idea to start helping each other ?
Maybe then we will not have the problems in our life?
I am an orthopedic occupational therapist, I treat hand and arm fractures by custom designing splints. The radiology department has been quoted as saying, "What would an OT need and X-ray for?" It's crazy that we have the ability to give the right answer but deny imaging to those who can use the information in a constructive manner. I have benefited from Dr. Amen's work, Thank you Dr. Amen.
I'm at a loss to know why this is not common practice when we have MRIs in regular use for a vast number of prognosis/diagnosis of patients.
Our behaviours stem from both nature and nurture so it would make sense to assimilate scan and therapy.
stop believing everything you see online, wait to see if the conspiracy supporters can prove it in a court of law where is going now. As a matter of fact one of them is already recanting because he is about to lose all his income for inflicting slander and pain on the parents of Sandy hook
He’s speaking the full truth here about psychiatric treatments. I went to one and it didn’t help me at all. He never bothered to do a brain scan and only took some ramblings about mood swings from me..
The entire Team of practitioners who work with the medical profession are educated to treat patience. Doctors are working for money. The pharmaceutical who produce drugs, tables, pills etc: as the case may be according the the individual diagonal medical problem. The professional team will feed out the family where financial resources is concern. If for example a man come back from the war zone, bones are broken and many other medical problem's occurs help is given. On a continuous basis the individual have brain problems , for example, depression, hearing voices, pain on a constant basis. Tablets, Drugs, pills are given with many side effects. No one explain reality. Only a load tragedy's from one to the next of medical problem's occurs. The fact of the matter professional have be Challenge for their poor choices of Care given to the people for their present day lifestyle.
Do you think that rewiring the brain is better than surgery in the case of one’s brain not matching one’s gender? I know that ‘conversion therapy camps’ for homosexuality Is controversial, but this study suggests it’s possible to change the way a brain works!
Jumping from Fs and Ds to As and Bs I don’t know with medicine and treatment if they can achieve , if a kid will not learn to add 1+1 I don’t catch how with medicine will reach to do 11+11. With Many kids when they reach to 11 and 12 years they face difficulties in maths for example is that there maths of previous classes were not taught to them.
Daniel said - "When you have the PRIVILEGE to change someone's brain"....is Key to why this isn't available to ALL People with issues. MEDICAL IS STILL BIG BUSINESS - and until it's made available to all peoples....many will suffer, die or do irradical things.
He is a GREAT marketeer! SPECT, MRI , fMRI PET and even CT are all great tools -- and psychiatrists ought to use them more often! He's chosen some of the best of the 83k scans to present here and the story he tells is a great one but it is over-stated. Treating people with behavioural or psychiatric programmes won't reverse dementia or cure encephalitis -- and many behavioural and cognitive problems don't result in brain scan abnormalities. But it is always worthwhile trying!
At age 7 I had my first traumatic brain injury. a horse stepped on my face blacked out for only a few seconds but I woke up with epilepsy a week later.
At 12 I had a radical to right temporal lobectomy to correct the partial seizures. (They took out around one cubic centimeter of temporal tissue nicking the occipital lobe).
within about 12 hours of waking up from the medically induced coma after surgery I realized a few things I have a little bit of blindness in the left front corner of my eyes, my head feels funny, and I can't remember anything.
I knew who my mother was, I knew how to ride a bike, I could walk (well save the jelly legs from two weeks in a coma). But I didn't know why I liked my mother. I didn't know why I was supposed to be proud of a trophy in my room. I had memory but I didn't have any memories. over the years I found the best way to describe it is like I was watching a movie or reading a book those things happened sure I knew they happened but I didn't feel them they weren't my experiences.
fast-forward through 8 years of Messi adolescence where you can't make human connection cuz you don't remember what love was. I was diagnosed with ADHD impulse issues and ODD.
I lift up my life with the weird combination of two traumatic brain injuries as well as at least three minor brain injuries or concussions that knocked me out that I'm aware of over the span of about 5 years between ages 15 and 20.
but something miraculous happened around age 2021 I started being able to remember things. Somebody put their finger to their forehead and bow down like a unicorn which was exactly what my elementary school nurse did and all of a sudden after 10 years of no Memories the name Kelly Bamford came to my head all of a sudden I remembered what the nurse's office look like in my elementary school I remember all the funny goofy jokes you used to tell me I remember her being effectively my best friend in elementary school cuz nobody likes the kid with seizures. all the sudden it came flooding back to me and I remember thinking shock and awe that I could remember something I thought all my memories have been physically removed from my skull with that brain surgery my recall was broken not my memories.
Fast forward about a year after that and I have another incidents very similar the city-wide parade came around and all of a sudden I remember what middle school me in Middle School best friend did at the fair.
I got these flashes of experiences and they felt like they were mine and not just reading from a book.
After 10 years with Advanced retrograde amnesia never feeling human and complete because I had zero memories accept 9/11/01 before the age of 12 (and very broken memories from 12-15).
My brain healed itself through will and time decent psychotherapy and will I started remembering things that I thought were lost forever.
Your brain can and will fix itself if you teach it to and you care for it properly.
All the doctors I have had in my life were no more qualified than a witchdoctor. To them, hearing the health issues over and over again from their patients is boring and impersonal. You have to love what you do which enables you to be interested and think outside the box. The new generation of doctors will be worse, they just won't get it.
I normally don't comment on these, but have personal experience with the amen clinic and actually Dr Amen himself. 17 years ago I read his book (Change your Brain Change your life) by chance and realized he could possibly help our family. My husband suffered from anxiety and ADHD, our daughter and son also had ADHD and Dr Amen diagnosed my son with ODD.Our life was chaos, and our son was failing school. The Amen clinic not only diagnosed these issues, they accurately prescribed treatment and today our family is doing great!
Antidepressants are medications that can help relieve symptoms of depression, social anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders, seasonal affective disorder, and dysthymia, or mild chronic depression, as well as other conditions.
They aim to correct chemical imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to be responsible for changes in mood and behavior.
Depression Medications (Antidepressants)
These are the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressant.
Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are used to treat major depression, mood disorders, and possibly but less commonly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, menopausal symptoms, fibromyalgia, and chronic neuropathic pain.
SNRIs raise levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters in the brain that play a key role in stabilizing mood.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. They are effective in treating depression, and they have fewer side effects than the other antidepressants.
SSRIs block the reuptake, or absorption, of serotonin in the brain. This makes it easier for the brain cells to receive and send messages, resulting in better and more stable moods.
They are called "selective" because they mainly seem to affect serotonin, and not the other neurotransmitters.
